I'm interested how many calls g&f would resond to about meeting you and walking in to verify a skull so they could make the decission to let you have it or not? You're out for the weekend and you find a nice lion kill. Now, after the call, how long do you wait for someone to meet you? I would bet most game wardens don't have the time or want to start hiking into remote areas, or anywhere else, just to give permission or not if it's alright for you to take possesion. If it's a record book head do you think they are going to let you have it? Just some questions that pop into my head. The law is the law but has it gotten out of hand? It is our public land and who's to say it ought to belong to g&f if we are the ones that find it. I support g&f but I'm not sure on this one. I'm interested how everyone feels about this. TJ

How Would You Hunt This Coues Spot?
tjhunt2 replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Good information Jim. I've been hunting these deer for years and it's always good to hear how others hunt them and I will take some of your theories and try and remember them on my next hunt. It's never to late to teach an old dog new tricks. TJ -

I was fishing San Carlos last year when I found out on Thursday night I had drawn another elk tag. I'm very superstitous so I'm heading for San Carlos and hope I draw another elk tag and a long time coming antelope tag. Good luck to everyone on the draw this year. TJ -

How Would You Hunt This Coues Spot?
tjhunt2 replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I enjoyed listening to everyone's plan of attack and with each scenario brings a different approach that could work. I really liked Jim's planning and details he put in to this. From where the picture was taken, I think I would try and get a little more around to the left more so I could flop my fat butt down next to any shade and glass more head-on into the purple shaded area and continue to watch all the other tree shaded areas as well. I have always liked the 10am thru 2pm time for glassing because the sun is changing the shaded areas and the deer will be moving accordingly. Yes, watch for a deer heading for the water in the bottom during this time of day. If I could get comfortable and knew this area held deer I would stay put with my 15x56's. When other hunters enter the picture I'm never to happy but I do get excited that they could push out a buck and being seated in my spot would give me a better picture of the situation and my next plan of attack. Great subject Doug. It kind of got my blood pumping sitting here. TJ -
Woke at 3:30am and picked up my brother and Dad. We stopped for minnows at Jake's Corner and breakfast at ButcherHook. Got on the water around 7:30am and fished the Windy Hill area and SallyMae cove with no luck. After several hours of no fish we decided to head for School House and fished across from the boat ramp and finally caught our first fish at 1:30pm. Thank God! I was beginning to think we were going to get skunked. By 4:30pm we had caught 15 bass, 2 over, 1 in the slot and the rest were under that we threw back for another day. Along with them we had 5 crappies, 1 nice catfish, and 2 bluegill which we will have tonight for super. I'll take a couple pictures of super and post them later. On the drive home we spotted several deer. After dropping everyone off and finishing cleaning fish my super was at 10;00pm. It made for a long day but we hadn't fished all together for many of years and thought that is how we would celebrate my Mother's birthday, who past away in 2000. I'm sure she was watching over us and enjoyed the laughs we shared during the day. TJ 2 of 15 bass My Dad and brother Larry 2 0f 5 crappies Mr. Catfish TJ

Thanks everyone for your comments. That was my first flathead and it was mighty tasty. Even the wife liked it and she doesn't like catfish. All we ever ate was channel catfish and now she wants me to go catch more flatjheads. She doesn't have to ask me twice. Jim.....wish I could take as good as pictures as you. Snapshot......if you go I hope you have a good time and catch alot of fish. Gamehauler.....Larry and Dad are doing just fine thank you and congratulations on a new son-in-law. TJ

Jeremy, that is a huge looking bluegill. Congratulations to your son's first fish and thanks for sharing. That picture of him on the bank looks like he is thinking, "I bet there's a bigger one in there". TJ

Tracey, that is so awesome. Way to stick with it and congratulations on your bobcat. That had to be the most exciting thing ever. I have yet to get one of my own. Again, it was a pleasure to meet you and Angie at the water catchment project this last weekend. TJ -
Good pictures there Doug and thanks for sharing with us. TJ

Glad you got some pictures Jeremy. Sorry I didn't get to talk to you much but I didn't know who you were until after we were back at camp. Thanks for the pictures. Now my wife can see what we accomplished. TJ

It was a good time to get out and help on this water project and to meet Tracy, Angie, and Jeremy from coueswhitetail.com along with a few members of the Tuson Rocky Mountain Elk Society. I'm guessing there were around 20 volunteers. The Az G&F employees were friendly and Ben put together a first class outing with tortilla soup for super, EXCELLENT IF I MAY SAY SO, and an enjoyable camp fire which was a perfect ending to a hard days work. Many stories were told and a good time by all. It was nice to have represented coueswhitetail on this project and to have spent some time with Amanda. If any of you get a chance to get out and experience a water catchment project I highly recommend you do so. I believe we got more done than expected on Sat. and ran out of material so Sunday's work was called off. I was hardly able to pull myself out of bed Sun. morning. Them young guys worked this old man to the limit. LOL Maybe Amanda could post some pictures if she got any. TJ

Them are a couple great pictures of your shed hunting partners. Thanks for sharing. TJ

Can't get enough of them big boys you guys are catching Jim. Jackshoe and I had a 20plus day on Saguara Wednesday and all our fish didn't weigh that put together. Keep them pictures coming. TJ

That definitely would get anyone excited. That's a great find. I assume Colton will be scouting the area more often than not. Post the other side when he finds it. TJ
