GH is right about this guy being a gem when it comes to pranks. He was in on writing the book. Before he got his paback I have to tell the story leading up to it. His name is Mike, of all things, and he and another friend of mine, Scott, had gotten drawn for a muzzle loader hunt. Well Scott's birthday was coming up and his family was throwing a party for Scott and a bunch of his hunting buddies were invited. Scott had yet to purchase a gun so Mike, the gem of pranks, had his muzzle loader box from his gun and decided to fill it with tomatos, onions, and enough rocks to match the weight of a gun and wrap it for his present and signed it from all his buddies. Scott hates tomatos & onions by the way. This was saved for his last present to open and he read the card first that said from all his buddies and good luck hunting. As he unwrapped it and saw the box he was speachless and a few tears of happiness over came him as he couldn't believe his buddies all pitched in on such an expensive present. He was thanking each one of us with so much emotion, it was hard keeping a straight face and his family didn't have a clue and thought we all were a bunch of great guys. Well, he opened that box and saw all the tomatos, onions, and rocks. We should have had that on video cause he went through so many emotions in just a few moments and no one could stop laughing at is disappointment. His Grandmother did not think it funny one bit and let us know about it. Naturally Grandma gave him the money to buy himself a gun after feeling so badly for her Grandson. Now it was payback time for Mike. Scott had to get even, being a little bit of a prankster himself. Mike had been scouting a water hole near Casa Grand and spent alot of hours scouting and running back and forth from Mesa. He had a giant of a muley coming in and was so excited for opening morning to arrive. Scott had a friend who owns a sign company where he had them make a sign. Not just an ordinary sign but a huge sign saying Huge Buck This Way and a picture of a huge muley pointing towards where you had to turn to go to the water hole for all to see. Scott and another buddy drove out after dark the night before opening season, all the way from Mesa, and placed it in the ground at the last dirt intersection where Mike's head lights would shine on it in the morning hours. They knew Mike would get out and try and remove the sign before continuing on to his catchment not wanting others to see it, so they placed axel grease all over the back side of the post. It worked to a tee as I was told later. Mike was a little late, as always, and was hurrying to get to his stand when he approached his last split in the road to turn and spotted the sign that was lit up like a neon sign from his headlights. He didn't have time to think but knew that sign had to come down. He ran up and grabbed the post and you can imagine what happened next. Not only did he have grease all over his hands but now on his hunting cloths. PAYBACK!

Them are great pictures of the kids. I would frame them if I were you. I was wondering if you have ever thought of having them write down their adventures? Can you imagine what it would be like 30 yrs or so from now to go back and read their hunting journals. It's amazing how a story can refresh a mind and bring back memories that have been forgotten. Just a suggestion that I wish I would have done when I was their age. You are a great Dad to take the time to get them out and hunting. TJ Now Tom, I know perfectly well that you are a gentleman and Peg is right you do have a sickness, but it is the best kind of all. Many of us have that same "illness". Mark is stuck up in Canada right now, snowed in for 2 days, hoping to get out tomorrow. He said that he got a MONSTER! Kathi Kathi, why didn't you tell me yearlier he was stuck in Canada snowed in. We could have been BBQing out every night and telling hunt stories around the fire. Can't wait to hear his stories and see his pictures. Keep us posted. By the way, did you buy that ranger? I just got back from a couple days of spending time in unit 22 scouting for my wt hunt and just wanted to share with you all that if you ever wanted to hear alot of bugles then now is the time to be in the woods. You don't have to have an elk tag to enjoy the forest this time of year. As I lay in my sleeping bag next to the fire Sunday night the elk continued to bugle way after I feel asleep around 9pm. I was woken to bugles and they continued all day long where I was at. I happened upon 4 bulls carrying on at noon and had the pleasure of watching them for a long time. I could have killed them less than 100yds. I backed out and ran in to the only hunter I saw in the area. I asked if he had had any luck but said he was hearing them but wasn't having any luck. I assured him I could get him in on the bulls I just left for an easy shot and that I would help him get it out with the help of my elk buggy I pull behind my quad and he wasn't interested. He was around 60 yrs old and I hope I didn't hurt his feelings when I asked him what he was going to do if he shot one so far from any road with no help. He said he would take it out a piece at a time. My bet it would have spoiled in this heat. He wasn't in the best of shape. Before leaving him I offered one last time my help and to even help him Monday and Tuesday if need be. I even offered him my knive since he told me he lost his and he said thanks but no thanks and I went on my way and as I came back by these elk 4 hours later they were still bugling like crazy. I think the hunter left the area after losing his knive. Now is the time to take the family out to hear these bulls and take your camera and don't be like me and leave it and the video back in the truck. There are those who say there isn't much action going on but I assure you if you get off the beaten track you are in for the thrill of a life time. I've never heard so many bugles all day long. There is a rifle hunt going on but only a handful of hunters so be careful. Sorry no pictures but I have them stored in my head and you can to. Enjoy! TJ

Don't tell your cousin she thinks I am working long days but I think she has a hunch since the binos are always in the truck on my dash. Now that sounds like a good job to me. How do you get any work done with the game that close? That would drive me nuts. I would definately get fired for sure. TJ

I was glassing years ago in the 3bar area when I felt something crawling up against my chest. As I raised my binos to see what it was, I found myself starring straight in the eyes of a green racer. On the very next day I had the same type of snake craw up my pants while I was sitting glassing for deer. I don't know how I stayed so calm as I looked down at it's tail sticking out of my pant's leg. Yes, I am spooked now everywhere I go. TJ

I didn't put in for the Dec hunt because of the odds. Oct wt. I'ld be living there if it wasn't for the money and I'm to close to retirement to leave my job. I do spend most of my time off up in the rim county. You guys that live there are lucky to have it and yes I'm jealous. TJ
