questions about training a bird dog.

First of all welcome to the site. I had all the questions you are asking at one time and know exactly where you are coming from. I'm know expert on training dogs but I have trained my lab with the help of several people's advise on here and my good friend Ted Bounds. The internet is a great place to start. You can find just about anything you want on training and a ton of dog trainers with videos. There are some good trainers here in our state and if you have the money it is well worth the expense of doing it yourself. Brittany's are beautiful dogs and Remington is a cutie. Good luck and welcome to cwt. TJ

  6. These are my two best huntin partners at this moment in my life. Dad called me yesterday and said he wanted to go dove hunting. Last year he said he was done hunting and it was hard to except, since he turned 83, but it is what it is. He got his second wind, I guess, and I'm pumped that he got another spark and I drove him out to my dove spot for him to shoot some doves. My friend Ted Bounds loaned him his 20ga, since Dad's was being fixed, and he shot it very well. Dad shot 6 doves and my Lexie retrieved every bird for him. Lexie wore her pads down to the point she couldn't walk yeasterday very well but I booted her up today so she could hunt with Dad maybe his last time out. It was the first time Lexie ever was booted up and she was a site to see. Lexie fell down a couple times and looked like a Clinesdale running around. lol Dad and I got a great laugh out of her but she was a trooper and retrieved every bird but was wondering what I had done to her feet. Dad shot 6 birds and I got 7 with probably a 40 mile an hour wind. It was tough but a dove hunt I will never forget anytime soon. You just don't know when it will be the last hunt together so if you get the chance to hunt with your Dad, Mother, Uncle, Aunt, Brother, Sister, friend, or whoever, take the time and enjoy. Dad at 82 & Lexie at 1&1/2 Dad having a blast shooting doves Lexie, my other best friend She deserves my chair.

Sweet and sour 2011 archery elk hunt in unit 1

It was a long read but well worth it. Congratulations on all the bulls and thanks for sharing your hunt with us. My friend shot his first bull and I told him to come get me before he tracked it since he was within 10 minutes of me. He came and told me he thought he could see it down and I then told him to get back to the spot before someone steals it. He said, "someone would do that". I headed for camp to get my elk hauling buggy and when I got back to him two guys were standing over his bull and had gutted it. They took off and it all worked out. You are right, there are some low life scum bags out there. TJ

    2011 Bull Elk contest

TJ, There is a best field photo section that can be a cow or a bull, and there is also a best spirit of the hunt section that you didn't even have to kill an elk to enter. So yes you can enter your cow elk or even if you didn't tag an elk you can still send pic's for the spirit of the hunt section. Good luck to all!!! Thanks TAM, I will keep that in mind as my hunt developes. TJ

East side people? 202 and Elliot

I'm in! There seems like there are enough of us close by to have a great get=to=gether. Surely someone has a place big enough that can handle a few roudy cwt members. Maybe we can roast bobbyo for kicks and giggles. Just sayin! TJ

    Pork Fat

Everyone's reconmendations are right. It's all good. I use mostly beef suet, fat, with my elk but have used pork before. The ratio is your personal preference. I personally found that we like 25% suet added to elk and deer for hamburg and 50/50 pork butt or whatever is on sale for javelina. It's getting that time of year again so good luck to everyone on your hunts. TJ

    Nice Bull

I first saw this bull texted to me on the way to unit 27 on wednesday. I was having a hard time consentrating on driving when I got the text. I finally got caught up in some traffic and had to stop and pulled it back up again. Wow, is all I could say. Congratulations Josh on a huge bull and thanks for sharing it with us here on cwt. TJ

    Unit 1 Archery Bull

As I sit here drinking my first cup of coffee I turn on cwt and immediately click on your post Coach. You start out saying how it was going to be a long read and I sometimes fast forward thru not reading every word but this was so well written it was like reading a story out of Field & Stream. No, it was better! I felt myself being pulled in and being right there with you. I go pour my second cup of coffee and continue to enjoy the read until I read "not a bull I felt I could come onto an internet forum and show off". If I had been reading this in a magizine, I would have closed the book and thrown it across the room. I'm sure glad I didn't because I get to the part about what your wife had to say and the story pulls me even farther in. I just want to say that this is the best story I have ever read here on cwt and better than any magizine could have done. I feel you were so intent on a huge bull that you lost sight of anything else. I give alot of credit to your wife, your friend, and especially you for turning it around with a classic ending. Congratulations on your thick horned bull and for sharing an awesome story I will soon not forget. TJ

    Anyone heard from Amanda?

At 4am I was tucked deep inside my sleeping bag sleeping under the stars. I wasn't able to help with any hunting due to the knee. Probably some other good looking guy that looked like me. TJ
