  6. My son has gone with me on several hunts but is finally old enough this year to have his own tags. He drew a youth elk and deer tag so we have been scouting and practicing shooting. This is my first year guiding him so I have some questions from those who have been through this experience - Should I try to set him up prone or use my tripod with our triclawp for shots? (Assuming we have time and location to choose) It's been dry in our unit, is sitting water a good or bad idea? His attention span is not great as with most 10 year olds but I like the idea of shorter shots and having the rifle preset up on the triclawp. Who's tried it? Anything else you wish you would have known or wished someone would have told you about hunting with a youth? (Other than have patience!)

Input wanted - Hunting with a 10 year old

Well... We had a great hunt but did not bring home an elk. I had family come down from Idaho to help as well as a good hunting buddy. We ventured out on foot to glass in the mornings and sat water in the evenings to give him a break. Found two herds of cows during the hunt but both times we were not able to get him set up in time before they disappeared. Surprisingly we had no cows come into water on our evening sits. I had cows coming in almost every morning and evening on my cams but that all changed during the hunt. Oh well, that's hunting. And of course, had multiple opportunities to whack a bull on his hunt which never fails when you have a cow tag. When I asked him what his favorite part about the hunt was, he told me getting to spend time with his aunt and uncle from Idaho. It was a successful trip. Up next, 36A coues and javelina!

That’s a sweet looking set up! We’re going to the range tomorrow to try out the triclawps. Fingers crossed 🤞
  12. I'd be interested in the extension post if a buyer wants the tripod and regular post.

Input wanted - Hunting with a 10 year old

Bigorange - we've already registered for the SCI camp. I've found he always has more fun when other kids are around. Outdoor Writer - very cool story about the apples. I convinced my 75 year old grandfather to chase turkey with us in 12A. This may be the one and only time my son and grandfather get to hunt together. I'm very much looking forward to it. Definitely have the weather suggestions noted. I'm glad to hear others resort to electronics from time to time... I felt guilty about giving him my phone on and off when we sat in a ground blind. Raghorn - I like the maps idea I'll have to get him more involved in the prescouting. We also like to find cool rocks.

This is great. I like the BB gun idea and having him pick out his own clothes. He outgrew everything from last year already... we've been working on him adjusting the zoom. He's doing pretty good with it starting at low power and zooming in when he finds his target. We were lucky and did our field day for Hunters Ed before he turned 10. He's good to go there! Hynoon - he has 3A/C for elk and 36A for deer Catfish - I'd love to see your set up Lance - I hope to have that problem with him lol

Awesome, thanks for the quick responses. Keeping him into it as long as I want to be there has always been difficult. I know I need to slow down and just enjoy the hunt. We'll keep practicing with the triclawps and prone so we can adjust as needed. I like the idea of hiking in the AM and sitting water in the PM as a good compromise. Snacks are always a hit and one of the things my son looks forward to when going hunting. We stop at any local store we can find to get an ice cream or candy in between hunting. The scavenger hunt idea is also really good and will definitely try it.

    Rut Activity

3C was relatively quiet last weekend. Finally heard some bugles in the evening on Sunday, before that not a peep (besides other hunters).

    12A Turkeys + Grouse

Lots of turkey but grouse are hard to find. Southern end of the unit has more of them. Squirrel is also open
  19. Lots of pressure, use maps and find places you can hike into a mile from roads. It will be hot!
