    Game Camera Pics

Since there are no trees where I have the camera at. I took some camo rope and tied up a Agave plant. Then using some rocks and a couple of pieces of a yucca stick. I was able to make a secure mount on the plant, that even when the wind blows it won't budge. Works pretty good. I have used this same spot a couple of times now.

    Game Camera Pics

It is just one of the cheap Stealth cams. I have it set on a really good deer trail through a saddle. I got some pictures of a nice buck last April on the same trail. Just put it back in the area to see what was still running around. As you can see, they like it. This one buck got six pictures taken. I guess he liked the camera.

    Hunting Equipment

No problems through the checkpoints. Never even got searched until I came back into the US. I did give the young lads some elk meat at one of the Mexican Army checkpoints. I guess that is why they just waved me through coming back.
  4. This is a question to all of you that hunt Mexico frequently. Have any of you ever lost any equipment, especially optics, to searches by Mexican authorities? What I mean is, some not so good people that take a liking to what you have and take it away from you. I feel a little uneasy taking $3500 of optics down into a country that we really don't have any rights in. Just concerned about loosing something that would take years to replace again.
  5. Here are some pictures that I took of a buck killed by a friend of mine, Kyle Dauenhauer, on the last day of his December whitetail hunt. It has a 2 x 3 frame, with 18" main beams and 4" eyeguards. He grossed around 93". It was an old buck going downhill, his teeth were in bad shape. Here is a picture of Kyle proudly displaying his buck.

Any Tags Filled as of yet

I chased muleys with a bow for the last two days. Got within 60 yards twice this morning to a nice 3 point. Just didn't offer a good shot. Did have a bobcat climb a tree yesterday morning 54 yards from me. He sat there for about 5 minutes looking over the tall grass around the ravine that both of us were hunting. I thought about taking a shot at him, but it was neat having him beside me hunting as well. The muleys haven't started rutting yet. Saw a total of 4 bucks for both days and around 40 does. The biggest buck was the 3 point I tried to get this morning.

  10. Since the shooting on the San Carlos Reservation. It is now mandatory to wear hunter orange covering 40% of your body. Effective immediately, for any type of hunting on the reservation. I don't know if this would have stopped the boy getting shot, but it would have probably helped.

  15. Here's the latest and greatest from G&F's website: The Arizona Game and Fish Commission today decided to allocate more hunt permits for bull elk and deer to satisfy a court ruling. Last week, U.S. District Judge Robert Broomfield threw out Arizona?s 10 percent cap on nonresident hunt permits, saying it violated the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution. Today the judge denied the state?s request for more time to comply with his order, essentially forcing Arizona to retool the hunt draw process. Following today?s ruling, the choice before the commission was to either throw out the results of this year?s drawing for all elk and deer and re-conduct the draw? or to issue additional permit tags, many of them to nonresidents who may have been shut-out of the first drawing. The commission chose to allocate an additional 805 hunt permits. ?We had to follow the judge?s order,? says Deputy Director Steve Ferrell, ?and we determined that allocating more permits would harm the fewest amount of people without significantly affecting wildlife, either.? Those hunters already drawn for bull elk or drawn for antlered deer in Hunt Units 12A, 12B, 13A and 13B will receive permits as planned before the court ruling was issued. In order to accommodate the judge?s order, an additional list of applicants will be assembled, consisting of hunters who had the lowest random numbers issued during the draw process. That list will then be sorted without using the nonresident cap, resulting in an additional 805 hunters who will receive a permit. Although most of the new permits will go to nonresidents, some Arizonans will benefit, too, because some will be for residents who applied to hunt with nonresident friends. ?Given the constraints imposed by the judge, we think this system is the best choice to benefit all Arizona hunters,? says Ferrell. ?If we had to conduct the entire draw again, many hunters would not receive their permits in time to adequately plan their trip, and that would affect a lot of people who make their living in hunting-related businesses. And in terms of the effect on wildlife, because only a small number of hunt units are affected, we?ve determined that a one-time increase in permits will not significantly affect wildlife resources.? The additional permits will affect a relatively small percentage of hunt units?only 42 of 165 elk hunt units, and 9 of 108 deer hunt units. ?Most important,? says Ferrell, ? is that every Arizona hunter who was already drawn this fall will receive a permit. We?re not taking away any permits from residents.? The delay in the draw process will also cause a slight delay in permit mailings. Hunters selected in the original drawing can check to see whether they?ve been awarded a permit by checking the department Web site, azgfd.com, July 21. Hunters who receive the additional tags will be notified no later than Aug. 10 for hunts that begin in mid-September. Those hunters who were successful in the original drawing will receive their permits in the mail by July 30, and those who receive one of the additional permits?resident and nonresident?will receive their permits by Aug. 30. Meantime, the department is poised to release the names of applicants who have been drawn for species not affected by the court ruling: buffalo, bighorn sheep, turkey and antelope. Hunters who put in for those species can learn their status no later than 5 p.m. on July 20. More than 100 hunters attended today?s commission meeting. More than 270,000 people applied for big game permits for the fall hunt. Before the close of the meeting today, Game and Fish Director Duane Shroufe thanked his staff for working ?12 to 16 hour days since this ruling came down.? He also thanked the Game and Fish Commission for its decisiveness and hunters for their support of the department. Shroufe said this ruling would affect many other states besides Arizona. The Game and Fish Commission will discuss long-term options to address the court ruling at a meeting to be held in Flagstaff, Aug. 13-14.
  16. Buster, I have a question for you. Did any of you out-of-staters consider the kids of people that don't have a lot of money? What I mean is, I personally can't afford to put my kids in for hunts in other states. Thats what residency gives me. A cheap permit. You guys aren't only taking the tags away from us adults. But your taking away the permits to our youth. The youth that loves the outdoors. The youth that all of us love to spend time with. My daughter really wants an elk tag. Now she may have to wait for years, because some wealthy non-resident is getting the tags.
  17. Way to go az4life. You hit it right on the head.

    whens the actual day...

You know what all this waiting really feels like. Like when you were a small kid on Christmas eve. Waiting for morning to come, to see what Santa brought. Just my two cents.

    Burn area might be good

25-06, from what I heard, the helicopters emptied the lake. They were really hurting for water to fight the fires. I know they asked Graham County Coop if they could get some from them. But were turned down. I think that the city of Safford was letting them have some out of one of their wells. I also believe that they were getting water from Frye Mesa. So it is probably almost empty as well.
  20. I have hunted around the area you are talking about over the last 15 years. The last time I was drawn for 36B we changed and went down towards where you have been hunting. If you'd like, send me an email at coueselk@aol.com and I can give you the in's and out's around Murphy Peak. Maybe you can give me the in's and out's of Warsaw Canyon.

    caliber ?

I'm a .270 fan myself. Have an old M77 in .270 Win. that I have used over the last 11 years. Thought it was time to upgrade, so last year I purchased a Winchester Model 70 Coyote in the .270WSM. It has a medium heavy barrel and shoots really nice, but also, it is heavy. Anyway, it is very picky on the load. For the last 5 months I have been working on a 130 gr load. Last weekend, I finally got a group to hold less than 1/2 inch with Nosler Ballistic Tips. Tried it again today and achieved a .38 inch group with 10 rounds. I had to go through 5 different powders, 4 different primers and numerous bullet seating depths to get to this point. It has been fun though. Got lots of practice shooting, so I'm ready to go this fall.

What units did you all put in for?

Put in for late 36B whitetail, Unit 1 archery bull, Unit 1 rifle antelope, 31/32 sheep, Raymond ranch bull buffalo. Also antelope and deer in New Mexico. Daughter put in for 36B late whitetail, Unit 1 trophy bull, 31/32 rifle antelope and 31/32 sheep.
  23. Yeah, I got up to watch it also. Like you said, it was short. Probably one of the quickest hunts I have ever seen. I was ready to see some action, but the less-than-a-minute video of the hunt just didn't cut it. They should have filmed a little more. Maybe showed a few of the bucks they more than likely passed up.

    Taxidermy

Jason, I have had work done by 3 different taxidermists. One did a deer in 11 months, another in 22 months and the last took 8 months. I have a real good one now, but he moved to Michigan and I have to wait for him or his family to make the trip to have the animals delivered. He will be picking up my New Mexico mule deer next month and guarentees I will have it back by Thanksgiving. All that I can tell you is it varies by taxidermist. Some get them out in a year and some don't. Some do good work and others not so good. Hope this helps you. Danny H.
