A few years back I was sitting a draw that these deer were moving through. It was just in the V were two trees had fallen. I soon saw a group of does with 3 fawns coming my way so I just hunkered down not to spook them. They fed over to the logs I was sitting and and those three fawns bedded with there moms literally on the other side of the log I was behind. I sat there admireing this for about 15 mins when i got a horrible leg cramp from sitting there. I slowly eased up on my knees and peeked over the top of the log right down of the bedded fawn. That little thing looked up at me and I swear its eyes turned the size of dinner plates. They blew out of there but it ranks with one of the coolest experiances ive had. The story about your wife reminds me of a time camping with my wife. She was about 6 months pregnant and we were just sleeping in the back of our explorer. She wakes me up in the middle of the night a says she has to pee. I told her to just go ahead and she swore there was something outside so she wanted my to go out too. Reluctantly I told her OK and I said " Theres is nothing out there" and as soon as I swung the door open and hit the flashlight and sure enough there was a bear standing there at 40 yrds... So I ate my words and the bear scampered off into the dark. We both get out to do our business and while we are a pine cone falls out of the tree and lands next to my wife. She screams and frantically scrambles back into the truck his her pants around her ankles. I didnt sleep a wink that night because I couldnt stop laughing... Shes gonna kill me if she finds out I told that story on here. Jay

We headed out this weekend to do a little scouting and to hang some cams. Monsoons in Arizona have officially started so the kids and I headed out and dodged the brewing storms the best we could. We started out by checking the tanks to see if the summer storms had replenished their supplies and when the weather broke some we bailed off the ranger to look for some antlers. Ive taken them out a couple times to look for sheds but never really made too much of an effort in hiking around too much in fear of wearing them out and having them not enjoy the experience. We headed to a spot that Ive found sheds in the past and wasn't too nasty of country to hike around in. I prayed that we would actually find something to fuel their desire to get out in the woods again with there Dad. It turned out to be a great day... Not 300 yards from where we started Maty found a pile of old bones. I told her to just keep circling around and maybe we would get lucky and find the head. She soon found the jaw bones and both of them were pretty excited about just that. Any little find like that is a treasure to a little kid and they already had plans of how they were going to show Mom when we got home. I noticed something a little higher on the hill sticking out of the grass and directed Maty to go see if there was anything else up there.... Both kids spotted the spike bull skull and you would have thought they found a pot of gold the way they reacted, it was cool to watch. We headed over the next ridge and as soon as we did I saw a white 6 point across the canyon. I asked Maty if she saw anything and her eyes soon lit up and she looked up at me with that goofy smile those kids have when there permanent teeth coming in just look too big for that little face... The two of them bailed off in a race to get to the white gold on the other side. The kids were getting a little tired so we circled back towards the ranger. Conner was lagging behind and asked us to wait. We stopped for him and I looked up the hill and saw the tine sticking up out of the grass. I showed Maty and we decided that Conner needed to find one himself. I told Conner we need to try one more spot and that he should lead the way. We followed the little guy with some minor directing and the entire time heading up the hill he kept asking me "If I find a shed, would I be awesome?".. He got within in 5 feet of it and finally looked up and saw it. "An antler!! Dad I found an antler!" He was stoked to say the least. We headed back down the hill to head home and Conner asked me " Dad, am I awesome?" I just responded, "Yeah bud your awesome." It turned out to be a perfect day and I was thankful that we actually found some sheds to keep them interested. I'm grateful every time I get to go out into the outdoors, even more so when its with my kids! Jay

I went out on Tuesday night and glassed up about 7 bulls, Biggest being a little smaller than the size of that first pic. He was a ways off so it was hard to tell with him but a handfull of the other bulls were still at about a 5 point but they had big nobby ends. im sure they have a good amount of growing left to do. Its stinking dry out there though! Pray for some rain fast! Jay

Ive never had really great luck in finding sheds in 7E but over the past years have slowly learned on where to look. Without giving up any of my spots all ill say is think of bedding areas. look at some north facing slopes and canyons and if you look at areas where it makes you think to yourself "That area really looks like it would suck to hike up into" thats a good place to start.... As far as elevation, we havent gotten the snow like years past so they might be a little higher up the hill. Ive found sheds in the past at 8500-9000 ft.

The Flag city government is rediulously weighted to one side and it is frustrating to watch them deal with many issues. I was frustrated when Pressler got relelected. I think it weirds me out more that she was one of my RA's in the dorm at NAU freshman year. Maybe Im just still bitter about her busting us drinking in the dorms.... Anyways, Im in favor of the a new shooting range up here in Flag, but I have to say im not crazy about the location. Its a ways back in there where they have it slated and yes, its in some great Elk and Mule deer areas. I know it has to do with available lands out there but wish its was a little closer to I40 corridor. That little section over there is going to change a lot in the next few years if this goes in and also the Casino they are building at Twin Arrows! What is tthe purpose for the city of Flagstaff meeting anyway? Do they have any say whats so ever out in that area? -
Im selling my Badlands Stealth RT pack. The pack is in great shape. All zippers work and original pulls are still on. Has a strap on the front to lash a bow or other items. The top latch on this pack folds over on it self to close. Having no zipper cuts down on noise. Been used off and on the last few seasons. Im asking $60.00. Let me know if you have any questions. Jay
