    36B mulies???

Ran into you at the tank down there Sunday. Well here is one we got that evening after speaking with you. Lucked out and found him around 345 that day and was finally able to pack him out right at dark. It was my grandfathers hunt and memorable one for my dad and myself being able to hunt with him another year. Send me a pm ill he down there helping another buddy and his son. Maybe can try and get all the kids one this weekend. Love seeing this great sport be passed on
  3. FINALLY FRIDAY MORNING comes and guess what no "wow" Buck!!! All whole day spent looking for him but did see couple other nices ones but I knew he wouldn't be happy unless he got him. At the close of day one I had to ask him again if it was worth passing on other shooters cause the crowd was rolling in and traffic was starting to get heavy. Before bed he told me if one comes close enough he is taking the shot. I didn't know how I felt cause I now wanted "wow" Buck just as bad. Morning of day 2 our good buddy who unfortunately is a Minnesota Gopher fan came out to help along with my grandpa and my uncle and the pressure was on to make it happen so they can get a good show. First thing heading out on quads is a rain storm that seemed like enough rain I thought we'd have a new fishing hole to fish if we didn't find a Buck. Me and gopher boy waited out the storm for an hour or so after the storm passed went back to hunting and before I could get the binos out I found a group with my naked eye and guess who had 12 doe with him....it was our Buck and we were 400 yards from him unfortunately we didn't have the tags and the ol' man was a mile or two away looking at another area. We radioed him and he finally got him set up on the other side of us and we watch and waited...and waited !! It look like they were in shooting range and being the good buddy's we are asked WTF are you waiting for.... shoot !!!! So he set up unsure of the exact yards cause the range finder isn't picking up an accurate reading and fires away and as we watch we never once seen dust fly or never really spooked the antelope. Later found out it wasn't 400 yards it was more like 700-800 yards. Its easier than you think to make that mistake out there. After the hail mary shots we regrouped and quickly found him again this time he left the whole herd and stuck with one doe even better we were able to bed him down. We made game plan #2 and off gopher boy and pops went and I stay back and watch and soon began to realize they weren't doing what we discussed and hoped they made the right choice using the fence line as cover and as a marker to find the Buck who later I realized had a loner Buck cruising the out skirts of his hot doe. From my angle it became obvious they made a good move and the 1000 yards they needed to cover happened in a blink of an eye. Now watching them it look like they were gonna walk right on top of him and not seeing I have a dead radio I called and called and nothing. Good thing my radio was dead cause the things I was saying to them thinking they are gonna blow this PERFECT stock would have resulted in a nice black eye to match the shiny black horns in our Victory pictures. I watched in amaze that they seemed so close to the Buck and doe but yet they still never knew they were there. Finally I looked to see I had a dead radio and swapped out the batteries just in time as they had put the Buck perfectly between them and me and could give very simple directions to walk directly towards me and was thinking I can't believe they don't see him yet. Dealing with a handful of dead batteries and trying to keep an eye on things they kept walking and the more they walk the more I thought why are they not setting up to shoot and maybe he forgot archery season ended 2 days ago. No special rewards for the guy who can shoot an animal at 25 yards with a rifle. Out of my view I didn't know there was the smallest hill that was between them and the Buck that was giving them cover. It wasn't long before I seen them freeze and being a seasoned hunter the ol' man had made a great game changing decision to get the shooting sticks of his backpack as they just got to a point where the TREE STUMP they been staring at MOVED. Not a tree for miles around and this tree turned out to really be set of horns and just that quick he was in a standing position off his shooting sticks when gopher boy said he stood up. "Boom".....shot #1 broadside shot right over him. Luckily he is more is more worried about his hot doe he only runs as far as she did and she stops...BOOM..Shot #2 miss!!! For you guys who shoot a lot you can appreciate watching someone be able to shoot and rack in another round and shoot all while keeping this Buck in his scope and never taking his eye off the Buck looking thru the scope and be in a standing shooting position. never letting the Buck out of my binos I see him stop a 3rd time which I quickly realize is only stopping long enough to flip him the bird and the 3rd shot goes off and I see this Buck start to turn and run thinking he missed him again that same fast motion that looked like he was turning and burning just as quick was on his side and down!!!!!!! I looked back just in time to see pops knees turn to noodles and I was out of my chair and in the air high fiving myself. Only thing going through my head is "are you effing kidding me!!!! You missed 2 broadside shots and decide you would hit him with the last round in your gun??? Yeah no high fives for you for almost giving me a heart attack. Really I just wanted to lay my hands on this beautiful Buck we called the "wow" Buck. I am now HOOKED on antelope hunting. Congrats to my dad and that's Mr.M 2 all of you. He made an amazing shot which was a little over 400 yards of the shooting sticks in a standing position. For me it was worth every minute I spent writing this out telling this story. Sorry for the long story but I couldn't leave any. details out and I don't care what dad said that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Good luck to all on the rest of this years hunts. Don't be afraid to tell a good huntin story. Some of us do enjoy them

My version of the ol' mans hunt unit 10 2nd part

One thing to add is we wanted to get it to taxidermy ASAP cause we spent spent another couple days out there having a field day killing parrie dogs and when we finally got home had been informed to get it in before the horns are broken off and the taxidermist not being able to get a accurate look and measurement for his mount. Didn't realize how fragile an antelopes horns are and how easily they pull from the skull

My version of the ol' mans hunt unit 10 2nd part

I agree as to wanting to get it scored right away. I'm not sure the ol'man cares a great deal if it measures enough to go in the books but who wouldn't want a little recognition for your hard work. As far as Mr. Weller not scoring them we had asked out of curiosity and he said he did at one time but found that it had become to much of a problem now since some people are so worried on the score they would cause problems if they didn't like what they scored or between the group of hunters caused a fight about who's was bigger. Mr. Wheeler from little I know about him is one heck of a guy and from what I observed hunts cause that's what he loves to do and even though him and his boy have killed very nice animals that's not his first priority. We spent a little time With him as he loved giving the story about every animal in shop and what he knew about it but again I noticed he loved to talk about the hunt not about the size of the animal. Im gonna ask pops if he gonna score it soon cause I know once he heard it may score enough to go in the books I could see it being something he'd like to do for his own personal gratification. he had a couple javalina go in the books when he was a kid why not get his antelope in there if it deserves to be. sorry for the long response wanted to be clear on Mr. Weller and why he didn't score as it was explained to us.

My version of the ol' mans hunt unit 10 1st part

A couple more pictures from our trip
  7. couldn't help but bring this up again and tell my version of this amazing hunt. If you don't mind hearing about the same hunt again just from another perspective continue on reading. Don't know about the rest you folks but I never turn down a huntin story even if I heard it a million times. I have to start out saying first of all for those who never hunted antelope and hope to do a DIY hunt I can respect that but understand this is not deer hunting and you may think you covered a lot of ground but you have to realize if you think you drove enough or covered enough ground I can bet it was nowhere near the area an experience antelope hunter would consider enough ground covered. Putting a 100+ miles was not uncommon it seemed and that's all miles in the field no highway miles. When I first laid eyes on the big sky country it was truly an understatement. It seemed like we never found an antelope under a 1000 yards. Our first trips scouting our confidence level went from bad butt trophy hunters to quickly realizing we may be Photoshoping some horns on parrie dog if were gonna want to show any pictures. I had my moments I wondered if this was worth waiting the 17 years my dad waited but no way grandma Maloney raised no quitters. We took 5 days before the hunt to figure it out and hopefully have a game plan for opening day and let me tell you you can never scout to much for a hunt. Everyday our confidence went up and it only got better and better the closer we got to hunt. I can't leave out the great show a couple archery hunters put on for us. Never seen someone dress like an antelope and while stocking on all fours stop when the animals look their way and move their heads around in the grass as if they were grazing. Pretty wild watching that thru the 15's. Anyhow on day 3 we finally found that Buck that made us say at the same time "WOW" so that's what we named our Buck (other being "costume" Buck cause the guys in the antelope suits were going after him) we focused on him and luckily found him everyday day and snapped a couple live pictures of him. First time for that and I think that can be as fun as shooting them with a gun when you shooting for the perfect picture. Opening day at that point couldn't come quick enough

My version of the ol' mans hunt unit 10 2nd part

Well we didn't waste time and got him straight to wellers taxidermy and if you've ever taken an animal there they have strict rules about not scoring there but we did a rough score of 84' thinking it could go maybe tad higher. The great thing was he wanted to get one that he saw and thought would make a good mount and we lucked out by getting one that happen to score pretty good considering if was a DIY first time antelope hunt

    drew a Dec tag

Noramlly I wouldn't care to post what hunt I drew but I couldn't hold back after finding out I drew a December 36c tag. This is the unit John Doyle (if your from around these parts you know who Mr. Doyle is) taught my dad how to hunt the desert when he first moved here and this is also the unit my dad brought me and killed my first deer and pig in. It's a place real special to us cause its were my dads best friend and my uncle ashes are spread at. What's even better is due to some unfortunate circumstances I was not able to put in for any hunts the last 3 years and I did last second this year and I drew my first december tag ever. For me its only right I drew my first Dec hunt in this unit. I know this is the year I'll kill my dream buck and I know my dad knows this may be the year his boy kills a bigger buck than him (and that's not an easy task by no means) but great part about it is I will have my old man who is also my best friend out with me on my dream hunt. I can't wait for Dec not just to hunt deer but to be out with my dad making more great stories I can pass on to my family. Remember people its more than just killing a deer its the memories we make with our family and friends. Good luck to all that drew a tag. Shoot straight and remember to take a kid hunting. Its important we keep the good sport alive

    drew a Dec tag

Those are exactly the same units my dad took me before we explored other units. I'm sorry to hear about your bro but hearing what everyone had to say only validates why I know I need to appreciate being able to hunt with my pops. My grandfather who I'm lucky to still have around stop hunting after he retired and I was amazed how hard it was for me to except that but that tough old man finally put in again and drew a southern mule deer hunt. Plus my dad drew a unit 10 antelope tag which he has been waiting 15 years to draw so if that is not what you call a great start to the year then I don't know what is. Great thing is its only July can't wait to see what else this year brings

    "cuterebra" or nasal flies???

Just curious I was helping a buddy with his hunt and he was blessed with a nice buck. After cutting him up we began to prep the deer head to be boiled and found these grub look things in the head and throat area and just about freaked out. After looking into it a little more I figure they are "cuterebra" or nasal flies. I have a couple question hopefully some people would be able to help me with first of all is the deer meat still good for consumption? Is this something that should be reported to the game and fish? We went ahead and put the meat in the freezer for now but wont be eating it anytime soon until we find out for sure we can still eat the meat. Also is Bot Fly's the same thing? It would be greatly appreciated if I could get some Info so I know can help put my buddy's mind at ease and figure out what we can do with the meat.

My old man finally made it happen

I just wanna congratulate my ol' man (AZBUCKEYE) for finally connecting on his first bull elk. I got the email last night and I was a bit tic-off cause all I got was an email saying elk down with no PICS!!!!!!!!!! I knew I would be getting the phone call in a matter of time with some pictures to follow. Don't know all the details but will give what I know. He said he had actually first seen this bull on his trail cam and decided he would sit in a stand to see if he would show up. I guess after sitting till almost dark hearing bulls all around him he finally heard his bull but couldn't see him. With literally only mins left of shooting light his bull finally came in and made the shot but it was pretty dark he only knew he hit something cause of how loud his arrow sounded as it hit. The elk took off but was able to call them back in and had seen one elk in particular with what little light he had left and this one elk he was watching went down and he realized it was his bull. Needles to say the rest of the night was spent hanging out with good ol JIM and JACK. Im sure the story got better as the night went on telling the guys at camp he had to run the elk down and finish him off with his buck knife then fight of the grey wolves from taking his trophy lol......Congrats to the ol man once again. You deserved it and I wish more than anything I could have been there to share that moment. These are the moments we live for!!!!!

My old man finally made it happen

not a good pic but here is one from the night of the kill
  15. That was actually one thing my dad had brought up on his hunt. Normally I would agree as far as just hanging out in camping till later afternoon but He noticed he had a lot of elk on his trail cams coming in as early as 2 and 3 pm. Personally I am at least getting set up in the area I want to hunt by that time. To me there is nothing wrong with just sitting out in a meadow relaxing and waiting for the action. Thats when Me and the old man had some of our best talks and lots of good stories and knowledge of the outdoors passed down during these times. Can never go wrong with just sitting out and enjoying a beautiful open meadow plus you never know if you may catch the early guy pushing his herd out.

    Trouble with Illegals???

Them look like some pretty big nuts that squirrel has there scotty boy Thanks bro. in all seriousness I just wish everybody a successful hunt and if them illegals get in the way just tell them that they're giving away free furniture south of the border

    Trouble with Illegals???

Well for the people with there head in the sand...it just means Im not reading the front page of the news paper reading that garbage and believing everything they put out. Yeah Im sure they take up a lot of our tax money and yeah they cause problems here and there but they are also there when I got work that needs to be done and they don't complain unlike some americans I know. they are hard workers and I wish it was easier for them to do it legally but its not so they are doing what they have to do. Im definitely not saying Im for them coming here illegally but if they can do it the right way then more power to them. They just want a better life. Now back to hunting...... who's gonna kill the biggest buck out of 36c this year? I guarantee its gonna be this mexi-CAN
  19. maloney2121

    Trouble with Illegals???

How many of us on this site have the early october hunt in 36c and need a hunting partner? I have been drawn by myself and have not yet found a for sure partner but I do have people who may be available. If anybody has a tag by themselves and need someone to hunt with I am available. I know the unit very well and I got quite a few game plans to get away from pressure. Just throwing that out there cause I know it is always better to hunt with someone down south. As for the illegals maybe one will have some tequila with them when I kill my monster buck and we will have a fiesta

    Trouble with Illegals???

that is hilarious....I got that hunt down there this year and as long as i got my partner with me I not the least bit worried. I just avoid them and they go there own way and well if they wanna come up to me I feel I got enough military experience to handle to situation. this is my terrain and I know it just as well as they do. Lets play cowboys and indians....I used to love that game when I was a kid. LOL I hope Im not pissing anybody off but are we just gonna let them take over the land. Im not. I will stand my ground and let them know Im here to stay and will fight for it. It wont be the first time I have had to fight for my land as Im sure there are plenty of us on here who are prior military. I also believe that most of them are not here to cause harm. but the ones that do well lets do what we got to do to get rid of them.
  21. maloney2121

    Good problem 2 tags

well I would say that if I were you I would take first nice one you see cause come october Im taking the one your gonna wish you had Good luck either way!!!

    San Carlos Crappie

We have a place up there on the hill. Went up this weekend and killed the crappie. Right now it seems it would be better to catch from boat. They seem to be a little deeper in the 15-20 ft of water. We were fishing about 9ft with minnows. There is a bait shop going toward roosevelt that has minnows for about 2.50 a dozen. when it gets warmer they should move where you might be able to catch them from shore. Here is a few pictures but it only shows about half the fish we caught. On sunday with 3 people on the boat we brought in about 70 and threw back at LEAST 30. Great weekend with the boys!!!! Also on sunday I took a fairly close count of boats on water and at one point counted a 109 boats in seeing range. One of the pictures if you zoom in will give a idea of how many boats there was on the water

    Finally got kill with bow!!!

Actually Im a huge Ohio State Buckeye fan but just happened to have UofA cap.
  25. Me and the old man headed down south to chase some deer and pigs. It started out wet and cold and pretty much stayed like that all through sunday and monday. Even with the weather being the way it was it was still an eventful day. We started off in an area we knew held lots of deer and pigs and got there long before it got light. As we started to glass some guy came driving up right next to were we where and him and his buddies got out and just started walking right through the are we had been glassing. Never asked were we were gonna hunt only asked if he had spooked anything as he was driving up. I replied "not yet" but obviously he did not get the hint and just packed up and started on his way right through were we where hunting. Anyhow thats when we packed our stuff and headed to another area. We got to the new area and within minutes picked up a herd of pigs and not even a minute after ANOTHER hunter came driving right up to us and parked. At least this hunter had enough courtesy to ask what we were gonna do. We told him we had some pigs on a hill and he was nice enough to stay back and go another route. THANKS BOB. Thats how it should be done.. hope no one disagrees with me!! Finally got up the hill and found the pigs again. I had walked right up on the herd as they bedded down under a mesquite tree and then they all busted out from the tree and this lone ranger decided to stick around and provided me with a shot as he walked away from me. I knew I did not have much time to shoot cause he would be in some thick cover any time so I took the shot. I hit him and he ran off full speed. I wasn't sure if I hit him good so when he came around I blasted him with another shot this time broadside. That is such an awesome sight to see your arrow go right through and have the blood just pump out the side. I knew he was hit hard then. We trailed blood for about 75 yards and found him still very alive. Man these little boogers are tough. We decided he was hit good enough so we let him bleed out but it took almost 20 min before he would expired. With the way the morning started the day ended up being a great day. I feel great with this kill being my first with a bow and I hope there is more to come for me. I just wanted to add that having my pops there made it a very special hunt. I know he has seen me put endless stocks and seen me miss so many times and now he was there to experience it all with me. Thanks a lot pops.
