Tequila tank will put you on the back side of Aqua Caliente Hill. The road is #4436 but is not marked from the main redington road, but the the road is located on a curve and kind of goes up hill and is easy to drive by. You will need a 4X4 and there are a couple of steep hills to climb. Get the the "Aqua Caliente Hill" and "Piety Hill" 7.5 quad maps.

If I had this area, I would hunt the national forest land which is anything south of Tex Canyon Road. Halfmoon valley is pretty cool and can be accessed from Hwy 80. The "J bar A" ranch may not let you through from the west side. You can even get to this area from tex canyon rd. Get a BLM map and the Douglas Ranger District map of the area and maybe some 7.5 topos. The Chirachaua Wilderness map is a nice map of the area but it only shows a small part of the area.

I think some of you are over reacting and the use of physical threats, name calling, and the use of foul languge on this forum is unbecoming of a gentlemen. I believe that this is a set back, but there is other avenues that the commission can fight back with. I predict that this issue will be resolved for the benefit of Arizona hunters and USO will ultimately lose. Yes I am tweaked that it has held up the drawing process but I feel that I will get my tag.

The July 23rd date is in the regs as the date when the tags are suppose to be "mailed out by".

Anyone notice the new law in AZ?
Diamondbackaz replied to GRONG's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I beleive there was a period that a person was allowed to bag two deer a year back in the days when there were a bunch of left over whitetail tags, but those days are gone. -
I was recently up on top of Rice Peak and also went through Charouleau Gap (unit 33 on North side of Ctalinas) which was burned real bad in the Aspen Fire. The area was seeded with oats and some wheat. The oats have done real well, but I don't know if deer will eat them, maybe Amanda can answer that. Some areas especially the west side of Oracle Ridge, the area is moonscape with the skeletons of oak trees. However, many of these trees roots survived and there are green shoots coming out at the bottom of the trees. Tried adding a picture but don't know how. This area might be good//

Go to: http://abell.as.arizona.edu/~hill/latestl.cgi and see pictures of fire from the observatory web cam on Mt Grham. Click on previous pictures to see the fire progress.
-
A lot is going to depend on how hot the fire was in your area. I have seen fire go through one area and just burn the pine needles and dead sticks on the ground, and then go into another area and toast everything. It usually depends on how bad the wind was at the time the fire went through. Think positive until you see it for yourself.

new winchester rifle
Diamondbackaz replied to newcoueshunter5's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Since you are considering a magnum, I am assuming you want to shoot long distances? The 7mm or 30 caliber will have better killing power (energy) at those ranges. -
new winchester rifle

If I were getting a wsm, I would get a 7mm or the 300. These calibers are more versatile and can be used on Elk. -
This subject has been dealt with before, go to : http://coueswhitetail.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=388 and also look around in other places on the forum...

Need advice on handguns
Diamondbackaz replied to TREESTANDMAN's topic in Handgun Hunting for Coues Deer
The smith is a fine handgun but it is pricey, see http://www.swfirearms.vista.com/store/inde...&sw_activeTab=1 . The Taurus is $200.00 cheaper, see http://www.taurususa.com/products/product-...tegory=Revolver . The Taurus is a quality firearm and is based on the smith design. I personally prefer nylon holsters as leather tends to atract moisture. I believe Taurus is the best choice for inexpensive quality. -
I am one who feels the moon affects feeding times and ones hunt. If you haven't already done it, here is a web site that you can plug in your hunt days to see what the moon is doing: http://www.imagiware.com/astro/moon.cgi

Need advice on handguns
Diamondbackaz replied to TREESTANDMAN's topic in Handgun Hunting for Coues Deer
Looking back at your post, "inexpensive, good quality" I don't know if there is such a thing. I would suggest Ruger or Taurus. Since you want to do targets, I would go with a 6" barrel. -
Road is open, you have to access it from 1997 right of way off of Lago Del Oro which is further north from the old way in. However this way in is in jeopardy too since it is only a ten year lease which is up in 2007. More info: http://www.tucsonroughriders.com/modules.p...=article&sid=26 and http://www.4x4wire.com/trail/report/az/charouleaugap02/ and http://www.wheelingarizona.com/index2.htm . The road is tough in some spots and a locker in the rear is recomended.

Mattule, the 06 will do you fine and ammo is easy to find with lots of choices if you don't reload. I quit using mine because I wanted to haul around something lighter. I looked into the 270wsm and the 7MMwsm magnum calibers and found this Browning I liked at 5lbs. 8oz. See: http://www.browning.com/products/catalog/f...035&type_id=038 . I decided against it because it was pricey, and I wasn't gaining all that much in performance. I may get it later if I start shooting at extreme distances at 500 yards+ since I will glass hunt this year. Remember this, the 06 has probably killed more animals than any other caliber.

I used to use a sporterized Springfield 06 that my dad made for me when I was 2 years old back in 1965. It has taken at least 8 deer and 4 elk. I retired it for deer since I wanted something lighter. I went to a model 7 in 243 and have taken 4 whitetail with it. I am retiring the model 7 since it didn't wack em hard enough. I had one run 70 yards with a heart lung shot before it dropped. The 06 with a 150 gr sierra spitzer would pretty much drop them in their tracks even when I hit one in the leg. I ask my dad if I could have his Husqvarna 270 featherweight since his hunting days are over. I restocked it with a McMillan stock w/ a Leupold 3.5/10 and is ready to go. The rifle was purchased in Denmark back in 1958 when my grandfather traveled back there. The old man walked off the plane with it under his arm in the box. Shows you how times have changed. I haven't felt the need for a Mag yet, but I think this 270 will do everything I want it to do//

Anyone notice the new law in AZ?
Diamondbackaz replied to GRONG's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I don't think it will help much since many will not call. It should be required that people that want to hunt a general season, turn in their unused archery tag. The phone call rule is better than nothing, but it goes back to relying on someones honesty like you had before. If a person doesn't take their animal to a butcher or a taxadermist shop where the tags are logged, and then don't brag about their kill, know one would never know. -
Go down to a BLM office and buy a 1/100,000 scale BLM map of the area. Many have been updated and now include topography. These maps are excellent will show you what land you are on. You can get them at map stores but the BLM will be your cheapest source at $5.00. Go to: http://www.az.blm.gov/dir.htm for locations of BLM offices.
