TRAIL CAMERAS ARE ILLEGAL!!!!
Diamondbackaz replied to TREESTANDMAN's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Some of those guys are just on a power trip. I know of a AGFD officer that is on a power trip. I know if I see someone with a metal detector when I am wearing green uniform, I couldn't care less and would wave at them as I drove by. Now if they're removing things from a archilogical site, then I would have to stop. The Forest Service is getting more restrictive as time goes on. My biggest gripe with some Forest Visitors is litter. Anybody know what the beer of slobs Is? It seems that 90% of the beer cans I come across is the same brand, can you name that brand? -
I spent some time in some burn areas (lower areas of the Aspen and Bullock burn) and didn't see any deer in them. All of the deer I did see this summer were not in burn areas (10 to 15 each time I was out). There were green shoots coming up at the bottom of the oak trees which I would think would be good deer food. I figure the reason why I didn't see any because there wasn't much cover from preditors.

TRAIL CAMERAS ARE ILLEGAL!!!!
Diamondbackaz replied to TREESTANDMAN's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
If you leave something up all year long, that is an issue. But when it comes to something that is short term such as less than 14 days, I don't see it being a big issue. Most LEO's (FS law enforcement officer) don't leave the main road too much and they very rarely leave their vehicle. Guide, I'm not sure what you mean by "If the ranger does not agree with the way you understand the law he can site you on the spot." A judge always has the last say on any law. I would be more worried about someone stealing a camera than being cited for one. -

I wouldn't worry about it since I assume you would be putting it in a place that would be very isolated where another human won't see it. It is very rare that a FS employee makes it out to isolated areas where you would put a camera. Most of the FS employees spend most of their time in an office. The ones out in the field are usually in developed recreation areas. -

The key to this whole mess is to get action in states that are out of the 9th circuits jurisdiction and to get a contradictory opinion in another circuit ( see: http://www.uscourts.gov/links.html ). Then the Supreme Court would have to get involved. The 9th circuit is the most overturned court of appeals in the country since it is a very activist court. -
Guessing Range and wind drift
Diamondbackaz replied to coues addict's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I got one but haven't used it yet. I will have it with me this year. It is just another technological tool just like your rifle, bow, binos, and all the other goodies in your backpack. The only time I would consider using it would be for distances I know that are 300 yards away. Anything closer, I should be able to whack it without it. I have a bushnell 800 compact which is the same as the nikon compact 800. A friend of mine had the same thing but traded them in for the Leicas when he had a hard time getting a signal back on the longer distances. He says the Leicas do a better job at picking up things and the longer ranges. -
AZGFD IS ASKING FOR SUGGESTIONS
Diamondbackaz replied to KGAINES's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
We all have the same goal here. Everyone should write a letter, numbers do mean something. Another thing to consider in addition to everyones individual letter, is to come up with a organized group letter. Organized goups have a lot of pull. I don't know how coueswhitetail.com can come together as a group to agree on content since their is no elected board, but we might be able to come up with something. -

Guide, my issues on my recommendations were for writing letters to government officials, not for writing posts on this forum. I never complained about how people write on this forum other than keeping it clean. I even get sloppy sometimes on the forum. The quote that I took off of one of the threads was to show an example of poor writing, and the type of writing that should not be used to write a letter. I have worked in government for both the Forest Service and the schools most of my adult life. I have been on the receiving in of many letters. I have read through many environmental impact statements some of which include letters from the public. If you read some of these letters, you know what I am talking about. I have seen adults write like 4th graders with 8th grade attitudes. You don?t have to be a genius to write a good letter. Guide after reading many of your posts, you have more than enough writing skills to articulate your point of view in a good letter. Keep them pithy which means having substance and point. AZ4life witnessed how people can be at a public meeting; many of the letters they will get won?t be much different. -

Good point Keith on not to make personal attacks, I have seen things come to a screeching halt when this happens. I do feel that the AGFD is actually reaching out to us hunters on this one. Most of the time when a government agency requests comments, it's just a feel good process because law requires it. I wrote a comment earlier this year when the department was requesting comments on the fall regs. They later sent me a document with their responses to the comments. They had a rebuttal to all of the comments with the exceptions of the comments that agreed with the changes they made. Then it was thank you for agreeing with us. I believe that this is an opportunity to have some real input into a closed system. -

Rich, I?m not suggesting that a person needs to be a genius to write an opinion, and I am no genius when it comes to writing since it is not my best subject area. What I am saying is to express an opinion in a way that the reader gains interest in it, and thinks about it. If a person writes a letter to where the reader gets defensive and builds up a mental wall, the letter has not achieved its intended purpose. You can display your anger, but be nice about it. I guess what I am saying here is that a letter that is well written, and one that is well thought out, and is positive goes a lot farther than one that isn?t. My intention here was to give some suggestions, not to put anyone down. -

You got me on the nowhere and I will correct it. But read what I said, a Lot of errors. Most people will make some mistakes, as most of us are not English majors. What I am referring to is when people write things that are ridiculous and dumb with lots of errors. Here is a comment I took right of off this web site on the Buster thread: ?Buster pull your head out of your butt and breathe some fresh air. I don't care hoe much money you dnated to those USO asses far as I'm concern you can take your bullshit and take to another state you liberal SOB. And nut up and register on this site before you come over here and stir shoot up.? And that wasn?t the only one. Now, what can you say about this person who wrote this? Do you think any respectable person will respect this opinion? You are judged by the way you write. Would you submit a job resume with a bunch of errors? -

Here are some recommendations on writing letters to government officials. ? Keep your letter short and to the point. If you write a letter as long as a bible it will be less likely that someone is going to read in depth knowing that they have 20,000 other letters to read. ? Be complimentary and positive such as using ?Thank you for your time? and things like that. Showing that ?you have an attitude? and that ?you are angry? will usually go nowhere. Be part of the solution, not part of the problem. ? Don?t be a whiner and a complainer. Nobody likes crybabies, and who wants to read their letter. ? Be reasonable, taking extremist positions and giving unreasonable recommendations will go know where, open minds will slam shut. ? Don?t use insults or use innuendo comments. Telling the people that are reading the letters that they are a bunch of Dumb Asses will go nowhere. It might make you feel better, but that?s not why you are writing the letter. ? Write intelligently. If you write like a retard, you probably are. Remember, ?one can be judged by one?s writings?. If you have a letter with a lot of misspellings and grammatical errors, it makes you look bad. Remember, these letters become public record and are open for all to see. If you are not the best writer, use your Microsoft word program and write your letter there, and then copy and paste it in the comment space. That spell check and grammar check are great. ? Avoid developing an opinion on something based on assumptions and rumors. -
I notice that there is a outdoor sportsman expo in August. Never been to one, are they worth going to, and is it worth the drive from Tucson?

I am for putting higher prices on trophy hunts. I think it's silly that a Bull tag is the same price as a cow, Kaibab hunts are only $15.00 more than the rest of the state for the crappy Mule Deer units, and a 4 day whitetail hunt costs the same for a 15 day hunt. I willing to pay a higher premium for a premium hunt, and also have the non resident pay a non resident premium for those hunts. I think this would also stand up in the courts. -

That's pretty extreme Keith. -
The 150 grain Sierra spitzer wound leave a nice size hole.

I agree//

This is one of the few units that whitetail territory make up almost the entire unit so check out all the side roads off of ruby road, tres bellotas road and the west side of the Tumacocori mountains. Deer can be found almost everywhere in this unit and I am now seeing them more in the lower grasslands. Get maps and your four wheel drive and learn the areas that fit your style of hunting. You will need more than one weekend to learn the area.

I used one with a 150 gr spitzer and it did the job.

Residents vs. Non-Residents
Diamondbackaz replied to KGAINES's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I have always been helpful to other hunters no matter where they come from, and will continue to do so. I like to be away from other hunters anyway and find places that many people don't know about. I do have a vast knowledge of southern Arizona from my avid four wheelling days and my work with the Forest Service. I am willing to share my knowledge as many have shared theirs on this forum or out in the field. To me, getting out is more important to me than getting a deer -
I believe the idea behind the current system was to allow science to dictate wildlife managment and not politics or emotions. There is no question that there is politics within the commissions appointments, and also in their decision making process. I don't think you will ever have a system free of politics. The purpose of the game and fish is wildlife managment, providing hunting opotunities is only one of many of their missions.

The 7 mag is going to have better killing power on those long range shots. If its a shooter, I wouldn't consider a new gun unless you want to go with one with less weight.
