My retired my 243 from whitetail hunting because it I had two heart lung shots run 100 yards before dropping. I went to a light weight 270 for more whack power to give them some extra shock of getting hit. My old 06 use to drop them in their tracks. I had two drop in their tracks with the 243 but they were neck shots. I would take the 308 over the 243.

Diamondbackaz replied to Rembrant's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Audsly and Rembrandt, I went back and highlighted and enlarged my statement regarding public lands and private WMP for those of you who missed it. There exists large tracks of private land currently closed to hunting. An example of this is the Baca grant in 18B, which as far as I know, it is still closed to hunting. I believe that this chunk of land is 100,000 acres. If a rancher could open this up to hunting, it increases hunting opportunities in the state. -

I am specifically speaking of the many private lands that are now closed to hunting that could be opened up since a private land owner now has an incentive to allow hunting on their land. I cut and pasted that section and high lighted in bold (listed below), that small land owners will not be able to be included in public land leases. I am still totally against any private WMP for any type of public land. As you stated, there probably not a whole lot of land owners with 2000 acres of land. ? State and federal lands to which a landowner has a lease can be included in the landowner?s ?Wildlife Management Plan.? (Those lands, however, cannot be counted towards the 2,000 acres of private land required for participation.) ? Management of state and federal lands in the Ranching for Wildlife program does not in any way prevent the public from accessing those lands to which they have legal access. -

I disagree about the inclusion of placing public lands in a ranchers "wildlife managment plan". I believe that this plan can increase some hunt opportunities, especially on lands that are currently off limits to hunting. This could be a good thing. Large land owners do have legitimate gripes with Elk damage to their land and should have a say on how the wildlife is managed on it. -
The model 600 and 660 had a recall way back when for this very reason after a kid was killed. I would contact Remington to get more info to see if they can fix it for nothing as this gun may never had the fix. What a bummer//

Got a new jeep

You probably had a two core radiator and went to a three core; meaning you went from two rows of tubes to three and getting better cooling. I will try the thermostat first, Thats $8.00 compared $200 to $400 for a premium radiator. I put a cooler thermostat in my chevy truck to get it to run cooler to get rid of the engine knock (preignition), and it worked. My jeep has a little engine knock during the summer when going up a grade. I just got to be careful not to get it to run to cool where I end up with excess carbon deposits. I will let you know how it works when I do it. They purposly make these engines to run on the warm side for emissions purposes. -
Got a new jeep

I own a jeep wrangler and have driven many of the cherokees when I worked with the Forest service. This summer I drove a wrangler with the 2 1/2" rock crawler suspension with a locker in the rear. The rancho 9000 shocks were adj andjustable to where there was little stiffness in the shock which made the ride real nice. It was a cake walk going through Charouleau gap. I would never go back to a stick since these newer transfer cases have lower low ranges than the old dana 20's and NP205's. Stack that up to a lock up torque converter, it acts more like a stick with the engine braking. The battery/alternator is an issue if you are in the back country. I change out my batteries every 3 years whether they need it or not, I started because I didn't want my wife stuck somewhere because of a dead battery. Batteries nowadays can die without warning. My biggest complaint with the jeep is the engine gets too hot during the summer, especially when 4 wheeling . I am going to pull out the 195 thermostat and put in a 160 this summer on my wrangler, that hopefully will let it run cooler. -
I know a long range shooter who hit a deer at 525 yards during the November season. He hit this thing exactly where he aimed. He has also has a 725 yard kill also. He also shoots his rifles at least once a week, loads to get dime size groups, uses his balistics program to know where the gun shoots at long distances, and makes a chart that he tapes to the side of his range finder. He uses the bottom plex at different powers on the scope for diffrent distances. He's got it down to a science. He an excellent shooter that knows what his equipment can do. I wouldn't consider shooting long distances simply because I don't do enough shooting and I don't spend enough time with my rifles. 350 to 400 is my comfortable limit with my 270.

Bowsniper, you most likely use forest roads to get back to where you want to start hiking. There already currently exists large wilderness areas where wildlife rarely sees a human. Road hunters have never really bothered me simply because they are hunting the roads while I am on foot hunting the back country. Thats just less hunters to deal with in the back country.

I posted on this issue awhile back when it was first proposed. Yes there are roads that would be closed with this proposal. As I stated awhile back, many of the main roads on the map are cherry stemed into the wilderness (cherry stemming is a process of putting the wilderness boundary on each side of the road too allow the road to remain open going into a wilderness area). My problem with this proposal it makes it a lot easier in the future to close off those roads by doing away with the cherry stems. A classic example of this is the the closing off Powers Garden in the Galiuros in 1984. This was done by closing the cherry stem into the 1964 wilderness area. In 1982, a group of us drove our Blazers and jeeps all the way back to the Powers Cabin and mine in the center of the Galiuros. The road is now closed off at Powers hill. Some might say this is a good thing, but existing roads, buildings, and mines are not wilderness compatable.

Here is a nice buck taken out by a plane http://www.ehowa.com/features/deervsplane.shtml and here is a deer hit by a ford http://www.ehowa.com/features/deervstaurus.shtml . Beware I started to post these earlier but withdrew since the site is geared towards adults. -

Ever heard of a Mtn Killing a Mtn Lion?
Diamondbackaz replied to az4life's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I would have to say that the two hounds pictured in the back probably was stalking the lion instead of the lion tracking them. -

Looking at the the AGFD web page http://www.azgfd.com/artman/publish/article_179.shtml nothing is set in stone yet.

Keith is right, the best way to shut him up is not to get baited into an argument by responding to one of his posts. Debate is fine, but it needs to be civil and respectful.

If you think about it, $50.00 for a deer tag for a once a year hunt is still one of the less expensive items for the hunt. It cost me $30.00 to fill my tank in my jeep for one day of scouting. I always felt if a tag is too cheap, anti hunters put in for those tags just to kepp a hunters out of the field. Right now, I know one person with a November whitetail tag that isn't going to use it because he decided to make some travel plans, what a waste. As for the legal stuff, taking the easy way out may also be taking the smart way out. Every time you deal with a law suit, it costs tens of thousands, and even hundreds of thousands of dollars just in litigation costs that our license fees pay for.

I like the premium deer hunt and hope it extends to December whitetail///

It is difficult to give you the advice on where to hunt since I don?t know what type of terrain or vegetation that you like to hunt in, or how you hunt. Some people might like to hunt big mountains with big canyons, and others may like to hunt rolling hills. Some might like to hunt the thick oak and manzanita, and some may like open areas with ocotillo and mesquite. It all depends on your personal preference. The only thing that I can tell you is to get maps, and get out and drive and find where you can get into and where you can?t, access is a big issue. Find areas that look good to you and meet your hunting style. Getting into more difficult areas will usually mean fewer hunters to deal with. I believe deer can be found all over and most large canyons will have deer in them.

Both the Forest and the county worked together and did some extensive repair work on it this last spring.
