It is difficult to give you the advice on where to hunt since I don?t know what type of terrain or vegetation that you like to hunt in, or how you hunt. Some people might like to hunt big mountains with big canyons, and others may like to hunt rolling hills. Some might like to hunt the thick oak and manzanita, and some may like open areas with ocotillo and mesquite. It all depends on your personal preference. Some people like to sit and glass while others hike for miles, or do a combination of both. The only thing that I can tell you is to get maps, and get out and drive and find where you can get into and where you can?t, access is a big issue. Find areas that look good to you that meet your hunting style. Getting into more difficult areas will usually mean fewer hunters to deal with. I believe deer can be found all over and most large canyons will have deer in them.

Must of missed it back then, and no I didn't read the text// oh well -
The hunter that was killed a year or two ago was in 34A by Helvetia which is on the Northern end of the Santa Ritas, 40 miles north of the border, a very rare incident. The camping part is the part I won't do anymore so I like to day hunt. Heres what I would do, stay at Rio Rico resort, get up early, drive to where you want to hunt. Hunt till dark and go back and eat in the dining room.

T John, word of caution. Renting of personal quads creates a possible liabilty issue that could put you at risk.

Windy Hill Light post

The water actually got up to about where my hand is on the post. 3 more feet above that is about where the lake is at 100% full at what they call the conservation pool. Then they have another 15 feet above that for flood control should they ever need it. And I figure they could even let it go higher than that since they raised the dam 70feet. -
Something unusual

37B is an "any antlered deer" permit which means you can go after white tail in that unit which are located around the Oracle area. Mulies is scattered through out the unit, even in the flats. The mountains and larger rolling hills would be easier to hunt though.

Yes, the west boat ramp is somewhere near by underneath me. My friend was up there a few months ago and tells me the light still turns on at night. -
For the first time ever in 23 years for coues tags, I didn't draw my first or 2nd choice. I ended up with 3rd chioce oct 30B. It beats staying at home.

I knew this thing was going to go poof. I remember when I was out at the old Florida ranger station last Summer, and looking up at the fuel buildup in that Canyon, I knew that this thing will go up one day.

Cousi1, I can't say what type of shortages there are other than the job openings listed on the state employment site. I have not heard read anywhere that there is a shortage of applicants for this area. If you feel obliged to take this on, then start lobbying for a increase in license and tag fees. As I see it, this is the only way to get pay increases for the wardens. Just be ready for people to resist this including people on this site. -

I haven't ask anyone in the department lately, but I will when I have an opportunity to do so. I researched this years ago because I considered going into the field myself. The main reason why I didn't because it was difficult to find employment because of the competitivness. I will say that I have not seen anything on the G&F web site indicating a problem with filling positons. -

Cousi1, I am getting my information off of the state web sites which show job titles with pay ranges. I am only quoting what I got off of the state web sites as I stated in my post. Also, please remember that these people chose to go into this profession knowing what the salaries and benefits are. They also have a choice to quit and do something else that could satisfy their financial needs. And yes, things like job security, retirement, sick time, comp time are real nice. And with comp time, which I understand is not avaiable to the private sector, a person can make the most important part of a job, TIME OFF. Couesdog, the game and fish is not an easy department to get into. They usually have several hundred applicants for one or two positions. I stand by my earlier posts// -
34A is a big unit and this fire is in an area that is difficult to hunt anyway. If I were hunting 34A, I would look into hunting the coal mine canyon property that was recently purchased by the state. The whole lower Sonoita creek area should be good too since it was closed to motor vehicles several years ago.

It's in Florida canyon which is a real rugged area. This has the potential to burn a lot of area.

My checks just cleared yesterday. I turned my app into the office on June 7th.
-
My checks haven't cleared yet either. I am suspect they got hammered with envelopes the last two weeks before the due date. I quadruple check everything before I seal the envelope, and then I drop it off at the AGF office in their drop box. Eliminates any chance of getting lost in the mail.

These road closures just may be the beginning of a big mess in that area. I tried to to access Landsman camp last Summer when I was working for the Forest Service but it was closed by a ranch. This area was open for years.
