Hey guys was hoping you guys could help me out with some general info about the Black River. So the brother in law is graduating from UofA next month and we want to go on a fishing trip to celebrate. Thinking about backpacking into the Black river for a couple nights in early June and trying to catch some smallies. I've heard theyre still in there even after the fire, although not as many big ones, numbers are still decent if you can find the right pools? I am not looking for anyones honey hole per say, but does anyone on here have any experience on the river? I have never been and looking for any help I can get. We have no problem hiking miles to get away from people or to a spot with a better chance at getting on some fish. Anyone have at least a general direction on the river for me to head to? Any reports this year? Feel free to PM me if you would like. Thanks!

Thanks for the pointers everyone.. Its going to take some more research on my end before we decide to do. It's either going to here or Lees Ferry. Really wish I had made it out to the Black before the fire so I could have seen what it used to be like.

By chance we happened to shoot both species in question this morning hunting. Thought I'd snap a few pics to better show what I was saying.. Ringer hens showing no black bar under secondaries and white cheeks Similar bill coloring as OP Another angle Scaup bill/head Showing the black bar under both of their secondaries -

To me it just looks like it is the white ring starting to form on the bill. Im still saying hen ringer. Thats the fun part about duck hunting in AZ, you never know what you're going to end up with each day -

In my opinion, it is definitely not a scaup.I believe it is a hen ringneck. Looking at the secondaries, there is not defined black bar along the bottom of the secondaries. Even a juvenile scaup should have that bar of coloration as seen here: http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/resource/birds/duckplum/lscaup.htm Here is a ringneck's secondaries, which look the same as what was posted http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/resource/birds/duckplum/ringneck.htm I can only be a hen ringer, or juvenile/eclipse drake by looking at the wing -
This looks like Cabela's version of the Nimrod.. Nylon upper straps. And made in USA. Maybe I'll have to try this one in person, wish they sold Nimrod locally http://www.cabelas.com/product/Cabelas-Hybrid-Binocular-Harness/1703212.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dhybrid%2Bharness%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts&Ntt=hybrid+harness&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products
