    Elk - antelope

I heard from my friend's wife's cousin's roomate's boyfriend who works for Game and Fish that due to the recent economy they only received about 3,000 applicants for elk. That means as long as we didn't all put in for the same hunts, that WE ARE ALL GETTING DRAWN!!!!!! AND, the draw is being completed today, with the results being posted tomorrow. I can't wait. I'll be up dialing the phone non-stop at 12:00 Midnight!
  2. Well, not exactly true. First of all, SW didn't put Popular out of business. I worked there for over 8 years. It was something way different all together. And, BPS and Cabelas is not running out SW. I have experienced the same problems as Hawkeye and others. The customer service and selection have REALLY taken a turn for the worse. That is the true reason they are suffering. Now, from a true business standpoint, it makes sense to dwindle down the inventory before you sell the company. However, that also comes at a huge expense to the satisfaction of your customer. It seems the new owners will have alot of reputation rebuilding to do when they take over.

    Aplications & the Economy

This economy will certainly affect this year's draw. The poll results certainly show that. Fewer applications in the overall draw will theoretically increase the odds of those who put in for "actual" hunts and not just BP's. However, I don't think it will affect the max point pools much at all. Most hunters that have 10,11,13,18 or whatever bonus points are not going to give in now. They will find a way to come up with the money. That's the boat I was in. I have 11 pts for elk and made darn sure I got my app in. However, I only had 8 pts for antelope so I only put in for a BP. Good luck to all! Except if you put in for the same hunts as me!

    Double Drop Beam Mexico Coues

Congrats! I am jealous to say the least. Now, I'm wishing I would've taken out that loan to go on the hunt. Hindsight is 20/20. I guess there is always next year. The pics of those bucks don't even do them justice. Holding them in your hands gives you a whole different perspective. wow.

    Nice late hunt Bull (pics)

Thanks for all the replies guys. We were really happy with the hunt. These late hunts can be really tough to find a good bull that isn't all busted up. This was in unit 22 for those of you that asked. It sure pays off to scout, practice, and have the right equipment. My dad could not of made that shot without a proven gun/load, sturdy tripod, 'the claw', and good nightforce scope. Good luck to everyone with those coveted Dec tags!!
  10. First of all, I have to say that I am very proud of my Dad. I am absolutely amazed that my dad, at age 61, was not only able to hike down to where this bull was, but also hike all the way out without aid. We were hunting an area with BIG, STEEP canyons in which my brother and our friend had found some shooter bulls scouting (for this hunt). These canyons offered cover and relief of hunting pressure simply by the remoteness and ruggedness of the terrain. We had spotted this bull late in the afternoon from our vantage point across the canyon. My brother in law spotted a speck of tan, and after we set up the tripod and binos, we realized this was probably a shooter bull. We kept an eye on this bull and a smaller bull as we waited for my dad and brother to reach our location. The bulls were calmly feeding and milling about on the roughly 70 degree inclined slope. A short time later, my dad arrived to look at the bull. He took a quick look and decided this was a good bull. The slope of the canyon we were perched atop did not allow for a good prone shot, which is typically needed for this 725 yard shot. Luckily, my dad had practiced shooting with the tripod adapter which I bought a few weeks ago. "The Claw" as the company calls it, clamps your gun sturdily into your tripod. Using the tripod as a steady rest, he was able to hold perfectly on the kill zone. One great shot, and the bull was down! There was no way were going to make it to the bull before dark, so we held off until daylight. We made a gameplan that I would go back to the shooting location and walk the guys down the canyon to where the bull was last seen. It took the guys a couple hours to work their way down to the area, but in the meantime I was able to glass up about 6" of the bulls antler behind some brush. When they reached the area, I soon heard shouts of joy. The bull hadn't gone 10 yards across the hill, but he did roll down hill about 20 yards. Now the "fun" part began of packing him out. Needless to say, we boned him out there rather than carrying quarters up that nasty canyon. Now, before anyone starts complaining about the ethics of the distance, let me state these facts. 1. he was shooting a .300 rem ultra mag and a 200 gr. Accubond bullet (plenty of energy at that distance) 2. we have mapped this gun and trajectory out past 1000 yards (actual shooting, not just on the computer) 3. we had an ubelievable shooting platform with the tripod and "the claw" 4. we even used a co-sign indicator to correct for the angle of shot 5. the day prior we had successfully "killed" two rocks at 900 yards 6. there was no possible way to cut the distance Enjoy, Shane.

    digital camo Savage 30-06

I've wanting to do this for a while. I've been looking at the Duracoat product. How is the Krylon Paint supposed to hold up? How did you apply it? Did you have to use a HVLP sprayer? Was is difficult? It looks bad a**. Good job.

  14. I had this muzzle brake put on my custom 30-378, and this thing is absolutely amazing! I've never shot through a brake that was more effective. AND to my surprise, the noise didn't blow me away. I had Bruce McArthur build it for me. He makes them for the Cheytac .408 and some others. Check it out. www.flintandfrizzengunshop.com muzzle brake picml
  15. Does anybody know of any gunsmiths in AZ that will cerakote a rifle? Has anybody done this to their rifle? What has your experience been? Thanks!

    awesome muzzle brake!

First of all, I am an experieced shooter. I like to think I know what to expect with a rifle. But the first time I shot my rifle with the new barrel (heavy) without having the factory brake anymore, I split my eye open(twice). So, there was a definate need for the brake. And this new brake is quiter than the factory Accubrake. Anyways, it's pretty awesome if anyone is looking for a brake.

    awesome muzzle brake!

Well, when I built my rifle, I completely disregarded weight. The thing is a toad. The brake is large, but my barrel is 1" at the muzzle. He does offer different sizes in the brake.

    Another huge bull down

Great job Bill. Thanks to all of you guys that helped out with this hunt. I personally know how much hard work and time went into this hunt, by Bill and the countless number of people that helped. That hunt was a blast and I only wish I could've spent more time up there and been there when the bull went down. He's a beautiful bull. I guess the "big ones that got away" will have to wait till next year when I draw that tag. What a great hunt. Later, Shane.
  19. I've decided that I need a pair of 15x56 Swaro's. Does anybody have any they are willing to sell or trade? call Shane 480-244-6574
  20. Well I finally took the leap. I've been wanting to customize my 30-378 wby Accumark some time now. I finally ordered my Timney Trigger, muzzle break from Bruce McArthur, and new 30" Heavy Palma barrel from Pac-nor. Of course it will be a few months before I even get my barrel and break but it should be a long range killing machine when I get done. I just have to keep my fingers crossed for my December tag.

    THEYRE UP

Looks like 10 points now for Archery bull. Man this sucks.
  22. Anybody had any experience with these guys? I'm having my Weatherby Accumark re-barreled and I'm wondering if these guys would do a good job. I'm looking to put a 30" tube on it, and I'm looking for extreme accuracy. It would be nice to find somebody local so I don't have to ship it. Thanks for the help.

C/W member says his card got hit

this wait is driving me crazy! I'm absolutely useless at work. This happens every year, and now we will go through it twice a year!

    Draw results are getting closer.

When I went to the AZGFD open house a few months ago, they said the same company is doing it this year that did it last. They "promised" that they had worked out all of the issues. I don't know if I would trust them. Let's all just keep our fingers crossed that we get charged on our card only once. They had a problem with that last year. Good luck everyone.
