Don't mean to hijack thread but what is the advantage of an e-tag from a hunter's point of view?  I never found using a paper tag all that difficult and never once had a problem with the current way of using a tag.  I always completed surveys online once I got the reminder in the mail.  Easy peazy.  The way I see it there are more negatives to an etag.  No phone service to "tag" animal and people questioning whether or not your animal is actually tagged are just a couple red flags for me.  What am I missing?   I'm not trying to be negative, just trying to understand better.

The app they made also gives you draw results and all your licenses too. So it's like the portal but no service needed. But for me I have taken my family members hunting a lot over the past couple years since I got my driver's license. Almost every time they forget their tags weather its just the morning hunt. Or they left the tag at home and we didn't find out till the first day of hunting. On my brother first hunt which was late archery elk we drove up to Williams set up camp n all that. Woke up the next day and started hiking. We get up to a glossing point and I asked to see his license and tag and he didn't. So we had to drive 4 hours back home n all that stuff. So I guess for me it'll be nice for myself and them. Just depends on your predicament

You do have to "opt in" to electronic tagging in your portal and then link the app to your portal. It may take a day for them to link up and the licenses appear in the app.

    Ah gotcha! Thank you!

  4. Not too sure if this is a topic already. But I just downloaded the etag app onto my phone. G&F posted about this app a few days ago so I gave it a try. It just stays on the homepage. It won't do anything. Is anyone else having the issue or heard about it?

When your hunting the late hunts its imperative to know the habits of the animal at that time of the year/season an example would be that they could care less about the cows. A bonus to the cold is you can hang your meat in a tree and its not going to spoil so you can come back the next day and finish packing your meat out, there are no meat bees or fly's to deal with either.

Personally I like the late rifle hunts. The bull in my avatar was taken on a late hunt, I started scouting in September and he was always in this one drainage with two other bulls.

That's sick man. I was looking into those but for now I don't feel too comfortable hunting that late due too the snow. I still have my little 2wd ranger. Maybe it'll get me on the main roads but sometimes the snow can get rough really fast. I'd hate to be stuck out there after a storm goes in. I have been saving for like an XJ or a 3rd Gen 4runner. After that I would like to start doing those late rifle tags. Odds seem to be a bit better!

Thankfully I've had the opportunity to kill a decent bull on the late archery hunt, If I didn't have the chance to do other hunts throughout the year the late archery hunts can be fun. There are a few things I did not like about them.  After shooting a few elk over the years I don't have a need to shoot a cow elk so my response will be for bull.

    1. In most of the units it can be pretty cold. I killed a late archery bull at 0 degrees. Cold can be hard on archery equipment

    2. They get into the thick stuff pretty early and can be very tough middle of the day hunting.

    3. Expensive .. I always found myself sleeping in a hotel or something, I hate camping in - degrees, just not fun for me.

    4. Even the worst bull hunts are getting harder and harder to draw, there isn't much opportunity (hunting every year) anymore.

To me I would rather spend my time off doing archery deer, or predator hunting or ducks or going out of state that spend a bunch of cold nights chasing raghorns on the late archery hunts.  That being said after I draw my next early tag I'm sure I'll be trying to hunt the late hunts just to hunt until I get too old to do so.

Yeah I was thinking about using a hotel. I don't have good enough camping supplies to really keep me warm if an early front or storm came in. I have been doing research on some of the units. I just kinda figured that imma put in for some harder tags like early archery elk and the kaibab mule deer tags, while I wait imma use this year to start kinda doing photography so I can learn about these animals without hunting them. Maybe I'll get better at stalking them I'm the long run too. I'm about 5-7 years away from the unit I wanna hunt. So I figured I'll learn a lot in that time

Big ball of yarn there.   2nd season can be warm or it can be 4 feet of snow.  If you have been on any hunt in AZ and think there is a lot of other hunters you’ll be blown away by the number of hunters in colorados second and third season.  They have their deer and elk hunts at the same time.  And bull elk is over the counter.  I’ve hunted 5 different states and they are all kind of the same. 70% will be road hunters.  10% will backpack in as far as they can.  The other 20 will park and hunt from the road every day.

most other states I’ve hunted after Oct 15 getting far into forest land without 4x4 and chains is difficult.  The terrain is way different than AZ.

As for your last question.  It depends on the unit.  All those options are available.  Do some research on their website.  They have a great map that shows winter range summer range landowner ship etc.

Sounds good! Thank you! I keep looking into it more and more, and it kinda sounds like it might have to be a next year trip

  8. Hey guys, I wanted to eventually get into out of state hunting soon so I started looking up some hunts. One that really crossed my mind was colorado mule deer. I would do rifle. Probably 2nd rifle because I don't really have snow gear like 4x4 or a nice wall tent. But I would probably stay at a hotel my first few times going. What has been all of your guys experience if you've ever went?

Would it be more of a pack in hunt? Or more of a hike in off a road or trailhead a few hills? Thanks!

Shot at 400 yards with Rem 700 in 7Mag I bought new in the early 90's. Barnes Factory ammo 160gr and Swarovski 3x18 with custom factory turret for 168 Nosler LRAB. Broke both shoulders. Guided by Grant Hottman and his assistant guide Tyler Sanchez. I'm old enough to be their grandfather but somehow managed to keep up with them.

This bull was taken on day six after a 600 yard stalk.

Figure on late hunts only having 1 or 2 chances at good bulls in 7 days so you have to be able to shoot a bow or rifle extremely well. If it rains most units roads trash out. Had one late bull only 500 yards from road. So muddy we had to take horses in 3.5 miles. Also rusted the inside of barrel so bad it was replaced with stainless. This year I had to cut brush for 3 hours to get to bull. Hands thrashed still. Early hunts you can have 1 or 2 chances per day if you scout well enough. Normally easy pack outs. Plus minimal breakage during early hunts. Most years at least a third of bulls are really busted up by Nov. Saw a 330 class bull this year busted above sword on left and only eye guards on right. Early hunts are just long days, late hunts are brutal all around.

Geez. That helps me make my decision

I waited 16 years for an early rifle tag.  Screw that.   I started putting in for hunts with lower success and higher draw odds. 3 tags in 7 years. 3 dead bulls!

That's awesome! If I get drawn imma prolly end up shooting the first bull I get the opportunity to shoot. I'm trying to kinda narrow down areas I wanna hunt. Try to scout it a little before the draw. At least learn the roads

Well having done both a few times there is nothing wrong with an early hunt. You can end up with tag soup either way. Early hunts are hot, late hunts have slim pickens. I tagged out on a bull on Wednesday after six days of leaving at 4-5AM each day and getting back at about 7:30.

Some mornings were 18dgF and we hiked five miles on some days.

Dang thats crazy man. I was on an early cow hunt with my mom this last season. It was fun calling the Bulls in. I found a nice pocket in 4b with pleanty of elk. Would you recommend a cow tag for early archery? Would that be a waste of 3 points or should I just keep going all in on bull tags?

It’s tough for sure. There are limited bulls and lots of really good hunters out there with really good help. People will tell you to go and enjoy the experience but if I was sitting on a handful of points I would opt for a good hunt over an opportunity hunt. After you enjoy a good hunt, then come slum it with us late hunters haha.

Gotcha. I got to go to a lotta good units during the rut the last few years. Called in Bulls almost everyday. Freaking insane!

  14. I know it's super early to be asking about elk hunting with all the season wrapping up but I had a few questions. I am going to be scouting a few units this week because I am interested in some late season tags but I also love hunting the rut in September with my friends and family.

What do you guys tend to perfer? How all do you guys wait for 10+ years it seems like for these tags? I was thinking of putting in eventually for the early archery hunt in 7E or the late archery in 23. But I don't wanna waste my points if it's bad.

I guess the main question is would you guys rather wait a long time for a good tag. Or do you guys like to go out on a harder hunt season or unit every couple years and really learn the ropes? Thank you

  15. Monsters at red butte. Found this giant near the trailhead. Here is a 234 casing for reference. It's not easy to find bucks. The east side is packed with hunters. Go far west. Less hunters. Only ran into 5 groups on the opening weekend over there. It's a hard hunt. All groups I talked too didn't even see any deer at all. I only saw one truck with a buck in the back. It was a 3x3

  16. I had the tag last year. Saw about 20-30 deer a day and saw maybe 3 bucks. Most deer activity was near the park boundary and near the reservation boundary in the north west portion of the unit. They would run to the closest water source during the first 15 minutes of light or in the last 15 minutes of light each day. Then they would run right back to safety. Deer density is really bad. I had 5 scouting trips and had only seen 4 bucks between all those trips before the hunt. Good luck

Remember the meat you got from your Kaibab muley? Divide it by 3.  Lol. Goats from heck.    You’ll probably see muleys and be pissed you have a coues tag. SouthernAZ is an amazing place, I lived there for many years. Take a shotgun, the quail hunting can be better than the deer hunting.  Just don’t shoot  the Mearns on the early  hunts,

Sounds good! I never had quail before. Is it that good? Anything like dove?
