An old codger friend of my dad's always called suspenders "spenders" or "spinders" without the prefix 'sus' at the beginning..... Just his small town way of pronouncing it.
-
I’m just intrigued to hear someone use the term “billfold”. Old school…. 😉 Hope he gets it back!

Coconino National Forest - Home (usda.gov) Pretty helpful link posted by @Newbie2012 on another thread.

Just drive to Horseshoe dang, Billy! There’s a trail/walkway that will take you right across it. 👍🏻

Pesticides had apparently built-up over time in the farmlands along the river, and then were washed in and concentrated in Painted Rock when it filled in 2005. Wasn't like a train tipped over or something like that..... More a product of usage over time.

Yes, I think it's true. At least true as of the last time the lake filled that much and levels of pesticides were measured almost 20 years ago (according to Wikipedia, which of course you always have to take with a grain of salt...). Also seems like the water level will recede fairly quickly, if history repeats itself. All that being said, it is definitely another indicator of what a great overall water season we've had here in AZ!!! 👍

Was just noticing that. Looks like the levee was recently added to add capacity. Looks to be not catastrophic for the lake, overall. 👍

Thanks, I'll look it up. BTW, I greatly appreciate your offer to borrow, but want to own it for my bookshelf. Thanks!!

Pretty awesome! Thanks for sharing. And yes, I just burned 45 minutes of company time watching it! (I'm "working" from home today... )

Thanks for the offer, maximus! Which book do you have? I'm browsing a few online..... (Your Complete Guide to the Arizona National Trail seems to be one of the most comprehensive ones....)

150QT should be enough, IMO. I vote for using dry ice and sealing-it up good! Should be good for 4 days. Check it at the 1/2 way mark to be sure, and add a little more dry ice if needed. Should still be frozen rock solid. +1 on ice cream stops for kids!

They're gonna grow fast!! (At least the ones that don't turn into Pike food... lol)

Thanks!! Ya, I'm not yet in my 60s, but not too-too far off. Several years ago I sort of figured I would tackle it as a retirement activity thing, but since the kids are gone and I'm a single (mostly) empty-nester, I've found I have some weekends so figured I would kick off the quest. Yep, I've seen (and hiked) portions here and there. Have chased quail along it plenty of times.... LOL Thanks! Now that I started doing some serious research/planning, it's amazing what a 'thing' it is. LOTS of folks are into it, it seems! Thanks! Pics for sure. So I've been exploring some of the internet group sites for the AZT. There is a super active Facebook group, and I'm getting a feel for some of the characters. I've been a fairly avid hiker off and on over the years, so am a little familiar with the scene. Lots of granola and Birks, along with others!! LOL

Crap, I hadn't realized they closed it. (Of course a quick Google search provided plenty of articles confirming.... ) The thought never really occurred to me to go visit it before, but just a couple of weeks ago my lady-friend was asking if I wanted to go check out 'Chocolate Falls'... Bummer...

This is good info. When I see it though, I get less optimistic about a windfall of Colorado river water rushing into Lake Powell, Havasu & Mead. Though basically the entire Colorado River water shed is above normal, it seems that the most important area (Rockies western slope) is not completely 'off the charts' above normal. The expected flow from AZ's own Little Colorado River looks like it will help, though! Proof will be in the pudding when the snow really starts to melt up north in May/June.

As a heads-up regarding 4 people in a 4x4 tent: I've had the 12x12 Alaknak for a LONG time, and love it! That being said, 4 people gets very tight in the 12x12. Especially with the stove, it would be tough. I've had 4 people in my tent several times over the years, and the primary way I was able to make it work was by using the Camo bunk cots that Cabelas sells (or at least sold...). The bunk cots allowed 4 people to sleep in the same floor space as 3, which made it doable. Good luck! S.

Yep, good info there. Let’s see: Powell is 22% full. Snowpack is 146% of average. Hoping for continued storm pounding through the spring! 🙏🏼

There have been some unbelievable powder days. (No snorkel , though… lol) Lived there for five years during college mid-80s and never saw anything like it. Back country guys aren’t having to hike 5 miles to cut fresh tracks this season, but they dang sure gotta make sure they have good batteries in their beacons. Nope! They can have that game!

Snow in Utah is WAY off the charts this year. Crazy!! (Been skiing twice, and gonna take another week up there in late April. ⛷️😉) The snow at Alta won’t get to the Colorado. It will run off to the west, along with all the other snow on the west side of the Wasatch range. That’s a good thing though, because the Great Salt Lake is hurting for it. That being said, all of the snow that fell just east of Alta on the east side of the range and beyond will absolutely get into the Colorado basin! Good stuff for Powell & Mead! 👍🏻

To me, it doesn't feel like a money grab simply because it's voluntary. Give some dough to take a chance or not..... Good that there is accountability and proof of the direct positive impact that the money has on wildlife projects. No big deal, IMO.

I remember back in the 90s when Lower Lake Mary was filled-up the same way, a buddy and I went up there an had a blast catching small-mid Northern Pike. Can be fun stuff when the lakes come back to life!!!

That's pretty gnarly. For anyone who has never been there, the magnitude can be hard to gage. If there was a person down there, they would be a small speck. (Those cottonwood trees help with scale...) S.
