Still hoping to get out a couple of times this year, but I can't help but be thinking about next season already! Those Gambels likes them some nice green Winter/Spring grass!! Don't want to jinx it, but it looks like the desert is shaping up nicely..... Crossing my fingers for a bit more rain, then at least one more good kicker in the Spring! Good luck to all!!! S.

Had three weeks off work over Christmas, and some of my evenings were taken up on a Breaking Bad binge. Had to chuckle when I saw this post.... Good luck! Hopefully you get a lead on a good one here! S.

The phrase 'From hero to zero.' comes to mind here. Lame enough if they accidently (and possibly negligibly) shot each other. SUPER lame to exploit the topic of illegals and border problems to bolster their case while begging for money for their medical expenses. Wow.....

Welcome to the site!!! LOTS of good folks and info here! Enjoy.... S.

I know you are looking for an opinion from someone who has experience with BOTH, but as an Alaknak owner I'm going to chime in anyway (even though I've never owned a canvas wall tent... ). LOVE the Alaknak! I have had the 12x12 size for 8 years now. I also have the vestibule that adds lots of extra space for stuff or chilling-out if camping for an extended period of time or with more than the normal load of gear to keep dry. I have taken it on numerous hunting and camping trips with the kids and friends over the years, and have found it to be a great tent. Positives: Fairly light, easy to set-up, great in rain (water proof), outstanding in wind! Negatives: The only negative that I can think of is that it does not breath quite like canvas does, so it can tend to get a little 'steamy' and have condensation collect on the ceiling in cold weather. I had a barrel stove that I used in it for a couple of years, and that was great too. Of course kept it sauna hot inside, and the pipe/chimney set-up and zipped floor flap for the stove made it convenient. (I ended-up not using the stove as much as I had anticipated though, and sold it after a couple of years.....) Hopefully someone will speak-up that has experience with both. Good luck in your search for the right tent for you!! S.

I never really understood this line of thinking. 'Don't ruin a young kid?' When my oldest son was 12 years old I put him in for a Jr. Hunt in New Mexico. He was drawn for an 'any elk' rifle hunt, smack in the middle of the rut, in one of New Mexico's many great hunting units. We had an amazing hunt but short hunt, as he killed a great 6X6 on opening day. This past fall at the age of 22, he killed a nice spike bull here in AZ and considered it another amazing hunt! Not ruined at all. That being said, I say everyone should raise their kids exactly how they think they choose to do. Get them involved in hunting early and show them why we all love it so much however you want to. I never tried to pile points up for any of my kids early, but more power to you if you want to! Good luck to ALL kids!! S. PS: As a side note, I haven't checked recently, but New Mexico used to have amazing Jr. Hunt opportunities! Based on the non-resident draw & tag allotment, there seemed to be good chances for kids getting drawn for great hunts (ANY elk in the rut?? lol). Anyway, if you have kids of hunting age you might want to check it out!

Why do you have to call me out, Lance? You know I can't stand to not comment! Sucks for Mr. Daughtery and Mr. Walker for sure. Truly hope they both recover and that the perpetrators are caught (Although if they did in fact escape back into Mexico it's of course highly unlikely.... )! Regarding safety on the border, I'm still not going to avoid hunting there. Love 36 A/B/C (like I think you do), and I will continue to hunt there without fear. Frankly, I feel more in danger on the I-10 freeway on my way there than I do once I have my feet on the ground in one of those units. I agree with Snapshot! Hopefully the appropriations process will move quickly! S.

Finally taking a couple of minutes to post an overdue BIG thumbs-up for Healy Arms!! My oldest son goes to school at ASU full time while working to help support himself, and has been working on a goal over the past year to save up enough money to buy his own hunting rifle (Until now he has always used one of my .7MMs....). Well, with his savings plus a little help with a gift card for Christmas he was able to finally get a new rifle! After much looking and debating, he settled on a Savage Weather Warrior, in a .30-06. (Side note: We freaking LOVE this rifle!! I was always a Remington/Browning guy, but this rifle is VERY nice!!) He purchased the rifle right after Christmas at Bass Pro because two of the gift cards he had acquired were from there. Well, he had previously purchased a Burris MTAC 4.5-14x42, and was itching to get the scope mounted and get to the range. I called Healy Arms from the Bass Pro parking lot, and the nice woman who answered the phone quickly said 'Sure, bring it on by and we can usually mount it while you wait....'. Nice!!! We drove right there and were greeted by Mark and his staff. Mark took the time to mount the scope (utilizing good solid Savage mounting rings, as opposed to the rings we were sold at Bass Pro...) and bi-pod right away while we waited. Nice casual gun and hunting chat with him and his crew passed the time while he did the work. We purchased a nice case and sling from him and left ready for the range! Note for everyone: I am guilty of assuming that the best prices are always at the 'big box' stores! While waiting we browsed the store looking at ammo, gun cases, and other misc. stuff. The prices were right on par with what we had seen at the big box down the road! Take the time to shop local!!! Especially at Healy Arms! Mark and his squad are awesome folks and deserve your business, IMO! Thank you Mark & team!!! S. http://www.healyarms.com/ BTW, Mark, the rifle is now zeroed in at 200 yards and shoots like a dream!!

Anyone know where to get iron sight plug screws locally?

Not certain, but maybe check-out Healy Arms? S. https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=healy%20arms%20tempe http://www.healyarms.com/ -
How much effort would you put forth to help someone like this?
stanley replied to GTIMANiac's topic in The Campfire
Like most others have said on here, I would definitely do what I could to help the guy. Whether the person in need shows their appreciation or not is not important to me. I really don't care about that. I just like having a little extra karma in my back pocket for the future. I've done some stupid stuff from time to time in my life, and I'm sure someone judged me as such (stupid, dip-what ever....). Always appreciated the help though. Good on you for helping the guy out! Looks like you are getting lots of info (and opinions) here! Keep in mind that lightning CAN strike! I was lucky enough to draw a Unit 1 archery bull tag last year with only one bonus point (hunter ed point). I can happen! Good luck! S.

VERY cool that this came together! +1 trphyhntr! Now we know how to rally a bunch of cw.com folks in the future! S. -

Hey Tom! Per our quick chat, I'm working on being there. Need to get a couple of work things covered (as well as my 17 year old daughter...). Should be able to get out there for at least a day or two. Can't wait! S. -
Favorite "Non-Steak House" Restaurant in the Valley?
stanley replied to rossislider's topic in The Campfire
A couple of favorites from my neighborhood in Central Phx: Richardson's on 16th, North of Bethany. Hillstone at about 28th Street and Camelback. Neither one has ever disappointed me. Bon apetite! S. -
Hunter appears to be a stand-up guy, IMO. He screwed-up, and then did what was obviously the right thing by self reporting. Regarding the penalty, there can be many things in play there. I don't necessarily see it as the judge throwing the book at the guy. For all we know, the judge did not have authority to reduce the fine. Maye mandatory penalties were in play. Not saying this was the case, just saying that I don't know the law there. For all we know, the penalty could have been much steeper had he not self reported and then got busted after the fact..... I also don't agree with the comments regarding whether this will reduce the likelihood of folks self reporting in the future or not. My sense is that 'self reporters' will generally do so anyway, because that is what they do! Strong morals and a conscience will generally drive someone's decision, IMO. Either way, + one on Vowell's original comment! Be sure of your target and beyond! S.

If you've never been to 36C, there are no secret pig spots IMO.... They can/will be pretty much anywhere. Do you have binoculars and a tripod? My advice would be to just get a bit of elevation in pretty much any drainage along the mountain range and glass, glass, glass. We've seen pigs around Elkhorn and King's Anvil, but really I think just in about any major canyon. Hopefully you have a little time to get out and scout a time or two prior to the hunt! Especially if we get more weather like the past day or so. If you can spend a day scouting right after a good rain storm and get down in and walk in some of the washes and drainages to look for sign in the fresh ground. Not a bad tactic to find a location. Good luck to you and your son!!!! S.

+ 1 for Coleman and Igloo ice chests! I have one of each, and my 100 qt Coleman always does me just fine. Block ice in the bottom will keep me in cold stuff for plenty of time. Light, lots of space, and economical! S.

What is the farthest you have tracked an animal?
stanley replied to AzDiamondHeat's topic in The Campfire
My son made a poor shot on an elk on a Jr. hunt in New Mexico several years ago. (Amanda was actually on that hunt helping us..... Was super fun!) Anyway, in that instance he hit it forward in the chest/brisket. The elk was sick enough that it wanted to keep lying down, but was not bleeding enough to die quickly. We played cat/mouse with the bull for about 4 hours in heavy timber before my son finally got a chance at a finish-up shot! I remember my father's words many years ago; "You do NOT want to be trailing a wounded elk! They are VERY tough animals!" Those words kept ringing in my ears while we were trying to finish off the bull.... My father said that back in the 70s while hunting in unit 1, a buddy of his shot and wounded a bull close to Vernon on the NW side of Green's Peak. They finally ended-up killing the bull over on the flats close to Springerville two days later. Not sure how far that is to track an animal, but it was a long way! S. -
Love it!!!!! Very awesome! S.

Oneshot's post on the 'desert treats' got me thinking...... Are Hackberry's edible? When quail and deer hunting this year, I noticed LOTS of them this year in the washes that I normally hunt. (Lots of quail, too! ) I actually smashed a couple of the orange/ripe berries in my fingers and tasted them. They seemed super sweet. Has anyone ever eaten them? S.

Back in the old days when I was a kid (70s), my dad turned me on to Morris Feel Gloves. Basic outstanding wool glove. Have always really liked them.... Haven't bought a pair in years though. Hopefully they are still making them! S.
