Had this on my mind as a topic for debate/input since last deer season. Finally making time on a quiet Friday morning to post it up..... Had an experience last hunting season that made me re-think what I assumed to be true about hiking-in to a hunting area. My preferred method over the past several season has been to find an area fairly far from any roads (3-5 miles) and hike-in before the first crack of light to hunt it. I had sort of always been aware of any disturbance I make hiking in, and kind of assumed that any deer in the immediate area of my hiking route to be spooked-off, and hence would of course focus my initial glassing on areas outside of or beyond my hiking route. Last year my buds and I were focusing on a particular drainage. I missed a nice buck on day two (my typical buck fever - rushed shot), and we decided to head back into the general area once again on day 3. One of my buddies was a 1/4 mile or so ahead of a me on the hike in, and was able to get this picture with his iPhone. Basically, he was hiking-up the trail getting close to our glassing spot (on a wide open hillside with just grass & some scrubby mesquite...) and he catches something in his peripheral vision from his headlamp. He looks to his left, and standing there about 10 feet off the trail is the buck that I had missed the day before! He was able to get his iPhone out and snap a quick pic before it wandered-off..... So basically, I just wanted to share this experience. For now on, I will NOT necessarily assume that all the deer have been spooked away by my hiking-in via headlamp. Conclusion for me is that they apparently feel VERY safe when nocturnal! Any other experience or thoughts on this topic to share?? Hunt on!!!!! S. Obviously very poor lighting. Approx 10-15 feet away with iPhone flash....

Also, one more thing to note: For those who have the 'VIP' tickets, originally it indicated that the additional time with Steve would be after the show. I got an e-mail from Tempe Improv a couple of days ago that said the Meet/Greet time will now be BEFORE the show, starting at 5:30. Assuming anyone who purchased the VIP tickets got the same e-mail I did, but FYI none the less. S.

Hmmm...... Who else is going to the show tomorrow? (My son and I will be there.) Possibly a good local topic to throw out there for discussion. Along with the other obvious local topic. S.

+1 While I TOTALLY support protecting artifacts and such, I feel like those were definitely the good ol' days!!!!!

Man, just seeing this post brings back some GREAT memories! Growing-up in Keany, our cross country coach would take us on 10K runs all over..... A couple of times a year he would load-up the school van with a few of us and go on a 'high altitude training day' to Seneca! We would sit on those rocks down by the dam and absolutely slay those little trout stockers on z-rays, Mepps, and cheese! Coach Rubalcaba was a cool dude! S.

Not Kiabab, and he showed it off all over the internet.

Arizona hunting license question
stanley replied to Original born to hunt's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
+1 I found myself in this exact same situation. When I was filling-out the application for deer on-line, the system was 'smart enough' to catch that my license would be expired prior to the actual draw date, so it presented the option for me to purchase a new license right at that point. All worked fine. S. -
If you cant set aside $300 a year I would advise you not to waste your money on a raffle ticket. This argument isnt very strong. If you can't set aside 300k for an auction tag, I advise you not to waste your money on a stamp.

Lookout, Bob! I heard a conservative meteorologist trying to sound smart too! For the record, I'm always skeptical when the monsoon hype starts getting going every summer. Especially in mid-June!

Thanks Jimmer! Checked-out his website, and looks like the REAL DEAL! (Love his strait talking style... ) No rush, and looking at all options. Would still love to check-out any possible local options if anyone else has a referral. Thanks everyone! S.

Hey everyone! My kids bought me a nice little fixed blade hunting knife for Christmas last year. (Like I needed another hunting knife.... Bless their hearts! ) Anyway, it was apparently a demo / floor model, and so it did not come with a case. Figured I would ask here, if anyone in this community does leather work or knows someone who might be able to make me a sheath/scabbard for it? Thanks in advance for any tips/help! S.

Thanks guys! mbiewer, I live in Central Phoenix (Central/Camelback), but work up in N. Phoenix/Scottsdale close to the Desert Ridge area. Can/will be mobile as needed, though. Casey, I would definitely appreciate any referral. Maybe check with your friend or his dad to inquire, and if he is possibly interested let me know. Thanks! S.

No idea on the length of the one in the pic. LOL though, at TJ's comment! As for the YouTube video. That thing is a freaking MONSTER! (Ha! Pun....) Seriously! The biggest I've seen was much closer to the 15-20 inch range. 30" is a beast!!! S.

I've had luck off & on. The past few summers I've taken to rending a boat for 1/2 day or so. Had fairly good luck drifting night crawlers under a small split-shot. Also throwing kastmasters, z-rays, and rooster tails. Fishing luck or not, Greer, Big Lake, Alpine, etc. sure is a pretty dang nice little slice of our state, that's for sure! Have fun!

I'm kind of a passive fan, I suppose. Have always enjoyed his shows when I have seen him, but have never listened to his podcast (maybe I should check it out). Seems like a pretty cool dude with his head on strait. I'm going to his show at the Improv in a few weeks. Looking forward to that. S.

Authoritarian state, now they wear bullet proof vests that say police on them, They've always been certified LEOs (at least the wardens..... maybe not the biologists...). If I was patrolling solo dealing with dudes with guns on a regular basis, I'm thinking I would wear a bullet proof vest too. -
So far it looks that way except for state and county land. National forest still open, but theyre supposed to be updating area closures this week. Thanks Not to get all 'technical', but this makes me wonder; If the fire restrictions prohibit discharging a firearm, I'm thinking that could still be a problem. Not sure how closely the Forest Service folks might police that, but just made me wonder. If so, maybe turkey hunt with a bow for those who want to follow the exact letter of the law? S.

Same here The e-mail address that I was notified by was: DoNotReply-sci-nevada.com I received it on the 12th of May. Don't really know (or care.... ) why it says May 31, 2018 on the internal text. Hadn't even noticed that. Guessing it was either a typo in the body of the e-mail, or maybe that is the date they are supposed to notify everyone by??? I'm just happy I'll be chasing muleys with a bow in Nine Mile! S.

Well, so much for my annual June Black River trip with my buds. All good though, if it means a little better chance of a fire not being started! Will gladly wait for monsoon rains to green things up a bit and maybe hit it in late July or August. Thanks for posting! S.
