Went to New Mexico last weekend, and was fortunate to kill an average buck (Lance knows where... ). A trophy to me! My sons and I only hunted pronghorn for the first time just three years ago, and I was immediately impressed with the meat. Super delicious!! Anyway, I saw a post many years ago on that other site about pressure canning game pronghorn, and was intrigued enough to try it out. (Obviously it could be used with ANY meat, but I chose pronghorn.....). So it was basically super simple. I got some canning jars and stuffed them full of pronghorn scraps. Put a 1/2 bullion cube into the jar, and also a couple of spicy jalapeno slices in some of them. Pressure cooked according to instruction - 15psi for 90 minutes. It came out really awesome!! It's like pot roast in a jar! I'm assuming others are doing this??? Happy eating, all!!! S. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The boned & prepped meat. No, I did NOT use the back straps!! LOL LOL Those are amazing cooked rare in the cast iron skillet! Finished canned (bottled) meat. Tasty! So then I decided to experiment a bit. I used larger jars, and added carrots, celery, and onion (mirepoix), plus some new-potatos and a 1/2 bullion cube. Instant stew!!! Don't have the 'after' pic, but it's not much to look at anyway! LOL Suffice to say, tasted excellent!

Umm...... The other one.

Indeed, Hector. It has been WAY too long since we've spent time in the field together.

Go Get 'Em

Anymore, the majority that I see look more like this one! Seems like starting about three or four years ago, the Eurasian population has exploded where we hunt. By the time we have a limit of mourning and/or white wings, we generally each have twice that many collard doves! One of my buddies described it as; "The best thing to happen to Arizona dove hunting in a long time!" LOL Makes for lots and lots of shooting fun! -
No idea on specific spots, but I know if I had an October cow tag in an unfamiliar unit that I would try to get up there a week or two prior to listen for bugles. Cruise around at night and early morning to various spots and listen for bugling elk. Easy way to locate general locations from a distance. Not a slam dunk, but there is a pretty fair chance that the elk will be int he same general spots during your hunt. Good luck!

Can it PLEASE be hunting season, already!!! π

Ya, it's interesting regarding all of the spectators. My view on that is that I remember back in the old days as a kid in Kearny in the 70s. If word got out that someone's dad got a nice muley (we didn't hunt coues then...), it wouldn't be long before friends and family, young and old, showed-up to admire it and talk about it. It might have been in a local wash out in the desert, or it might already have been hanging in someone's carport & being skinned. Was just sort of the way it was back then. Fond memories.... It's of course at a TOTALLY different level with a situation such as this with the governor's tag, but I guess people just want to see it and be a part of it. I'm guessing many stories will be told throughout the years by people who got to see it in person and lay hands on it.

Eh, had some laughs a time or two with that in college. Ended up not really being my thing, which was likely a good thing. Plenty of other substances out there that kill brain cells just fine....

Several years ago I sort of got on a mushroom hunting kick. It was super cool, and a fun thing to add to fishing trips to the White Mountains & Rim when my kids were younger (and sweeter). I found the 'Arizona Mushroom Society' online, and actually talked to some dude there to try to get info on mushroom identification. To Chef's point, this guy would NOT help me over the phone or with pics. He said that it is way too risky, even for him to be identifying some of them via pics. He offered to have me join him on some of their club excursions to the woods to learn, which might have been fun but I never had quite that level of interest or time. The only ones that ever became sort of no-brainers for me were what are called "oily" or "slimy" mushrooms. They are yellowish in color, and like catfishkev said, they have no ridges underneath. They are just sort of spongy looking. Lots of them grow in AZ. Pretty easy to find, but I don't think they are considered a very desirable variety. Anyway, good luck with the mushrooms!! S.

Ugh..... Speaking of hating. I always hate myself for getting dragged into pointless internet debates. But here I am.... Doing it. π For me, the bottom line is I generally try not to throw stones at other's houses. Never know when my glass home is exposed, so I will keep my mouth shut about others. Regarding your characterization and name calling, well I guess I just don't see the point in saying that type of thing about a situation and/or a person I know nothing about. BTW, did you actually watch the video carefully and listen?? I heard and saw NO high-fives by JJ after the first shot. What I heard was JJ concerned that he made a good hit, and asking for more ammo. I then heard follow-up shot. After the second shot and the bull was down, I heard only gratitude and happy chit-chat. Whatever though, Bill. We all see and hear what we want in life, I suppose. Keep on hating, man! It's a classy look. π€£

Those that know me that I am a TOTAL hack, and absolutely not a trophy hunter. I place a much greater value on relationships and experiences with those I care about over 'things' and/or 'trophies'..... That being said, in watching the video, it appears that JJ and everyone involved got the whole nine yards!! An amazing experience, great relationships/friends, and the big bull as the cherry on top! Good stuff! S.

OK, you should be good now. I moved it to the Bowhunting for Coues forum, and left a link in the Youth Hunters forum.

Wait, never mind. You want it to stay in youth, with a link in the archery???

Good stuff, Lance!!! Those pronghorn are some skittish critters! So awesome to have that time chasing them with your family!! S.

I finally got drenched at my place here in South Scottsdale last night. Radar showed quite a lot of rain throughout the Central Valley. Was hoping some of those fires got wet too.

Dove Scouting. Seen any?
stanley replied to Whitesheep's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Anyway.... Back to scouting reports; The location I hunt in the west valley area (generally south of Verado) is seeing the usual hoards of doves. Not certain of the white-wing vs. mourning break down, but the general report is good. Also, as has been the case the past several years, there is the added bonus of lots and lots of Eurasians!! The only caveat is that the report is from a huge dairy, so might not be representative of the average spot, but in general it looks as good as always. Can't wait! -
'No problem....' says the man with 1000 lbs of elk head, horn, and hide on his back in his avatar pic!!! π In all seriousness though, I'm in agreement with most here. Take care of the meat in the field quickly (Have you tried gutless??? You won't go back!). Debone and bag it, then load into your pack and get going. Also, if you can't get it all in one load; as long as you debone, bag and hang in the shade, you should be fine. If off the bone and clean, my experience is that the meat will not spoil that quickly. You should have enough time for the two trips it may take to get it on ice. Good luck!

Was thinking this exact sentiment Doug, when I saw Hector's note regarding synthetics. I'm fairly careful and will never loosely abuse a rifle, but I don't mind a few scratches/dings a bit.

Outstanding, Brandin!!! Super cool!! Lance sent me a pic of his buck. Looks like a great year! I was tied up this weekend, so heading up on Friday. Canβt wait!! S.
