Good analogy Lark! Pretty funny.... All I can say is that I will think long & hard before voting to give 10% of the ADA money to SFW. I think that SFW needs to stand on it's own, as opposed to skimming from the current grass roots organizations. If the ADA has a special interest that we want lobbying support for, then maybe we can chip-in as needed, but I'll have a hard time with a flat 10% accross the board. S.

Good feedback runningbird. A few other folks have made that point. Hopefully when we lay-out next year's calendar, we can schedule in mid-August or so to try to beat the fall hunts. S. -
Hey Allen, I wasn't at the SFW meeting either but I'm looking forward to an update at next Wednesday's ADA Board meeting. At the August board meeting, we agreed that the ADA would participate in this past Saturday's kick-off, but the only decision official made was to attend and potentially provide input from a 'deer' perspective. So far, the ADA board has NOT approved allocating 10% of our gross receipts to SFW, and has not yet been officially approached to do so. I don't know what kind of lobbying might be going on behind the scenes, but nothing has come in front of the board for approval yet. Certainly we can expect some lively debate when this gets in front of us for a vote. I'll look forward to an update from Dom, et al. in the meeting next week. Can you attend the board meeting this month? Might be an opportunity to learn more and voice an opinion.... I think it's going to be at Tim's this month; 6:30 next Weds. Look for the agenda from Tracey soon. S.

So was there any other CW regulars there last night besides Amanda, Allen, and Kevin? As usual, the speakers were great, and the kids had a good time to. We raffled-off some prizes for the kids, including some hats, a couple of BB guns, and a Rugar 10/22. Each kid also got an ADA hunting vest. I LOVE raffling-off that stuff, as the kids really get a kick out of it. I had my two youngest children along with me, and my little girl had an awesome time on the G&F hunting simulator. This morning she told me that she wants to be a quail hunter when she grows-up. I told her that she could be one BEFORE she grows-up if she wants to. Good time for sure.... Sorry Allen, tell Travis that there weren't any winners in his general raffle tickets. S. PS: I always love seeing those coues heads up close & personal when we display the ADA collection of trophies. How about that velvet buck? Beautiful.... -
Here is a link to the website for the org that puts the trash pick-up together: http://www.azhunterswhocare.org/index.html You'll also likely see reminders posted to this site when the time approaches. The clean-up effort is on Saturday only, but Mike (and several other G&F officers & others...) generally camp-out the Friday & Saturday nights. Good food & good times, along with lots of good talk about the deer in the area. S.

Hey Matt, it sounds like you're doing some good homework! You should try to participate in the unit 36A,B,C ranch clean-up on October 22nd. The WM (Mike Holister) for 36B will be there, and it would be a great chance for you to meet him and share some camp fire talk for some pointers on the unit. Good luck! S.

Awesome job Brian! Congrats on another archery coues buck!!! S.

I want to stress to everyone that kids are FREE! We will also be raffling off some prizes, including a .22 rifle, all for the kids only, and all FREE for them! We will have the AZ G&F on hand with their shooting simulator game (kids love it.... I might have to have a go myself...), and they will also be giving a little discussion and Q&A for the kids only. Good stuff, especially if you have a young child recently drawn for a hunt! Hope to see some folks there. S. PS: We could also use a couple of volunteers to help out a little bit with the kids stuff that evening. Let me know if you can help. Thanks! -
Outstanding buck! Treestandman hit it on the head; Good job on the homework!!! I was up in 23 with a couple of buddies & my boys, but I mainly spent time around camp with the little ones. More of a camping trip than anything... My friends had a good time on a few deer, but mainly spot/stalk. No real close calls. Congrats! S.

Last night at the monthly ADA board meeting, I was talking to Amanda about the various plans I have for this fall. It made me realize that I have VERY few weekends planned at home this fall: Weekend of 8/26 - Archery deer in 23. Weekend of 9/2 - Dove opener! Weekend of 9/16 - Possible Kiabab archery & archery cow in 6A Weekend of 9/23 - Second weekend of archery cow in 6A (if necessary...). Weekend of 10/7 - Quail opener! (can't miss that!) Weekend of 10/14 - My son's junior 6A cow elk hunt. Weekend of 10/21 - Unit 23 Youth Deer Hunter Camp (VOLUNTEERS WELCOME!) Weekend of 11/11 - My son's junior 12A doe hunt. Weekend of 11/18 - Unit 36A Youth Deer Hunter Camp (VOLUNTEER WELCOME!) Then it's quail, quail, quail..... 9 out of 13 weekends with something outdoors planned. Of course this is no top of work (several business trips to NYC - YUK...), 3 kids to chase around, pop-warner practice & games. Oh, and of course a little time carved-out for my lovely (and HUGELY supportive) wife. Awe..... mi vida loco.... I love it! Have a nice fall everyone & good luck! S. PS: If anyone is free during our ADA Youth Hunter weekends, you really should consider coming to one of our camps. They are a good time for all!

Got my issue of the Deer Times last week, and noticed a familiar name with a HUGE strip buck. Nice story Chris. S. -
Allen & Brian have given good advice. You should try to help out at the October 22nd Ranch Clean-up down there. It's a good opportunity to help-out and get a little scouting info in as well. Awesome tag, good luck! S.

"What are you going to do today Napolean?" "What ever I feel like!!! GOSH!!!!" I agree; Instant classic! A little kid that came to our house a couple of days ago to play with my boy was wearing a t-shirt that said "Get your own tots". I had to chuckle... S.

I don't have much info on 36A myself, but here's some advice; Try to carve some time out of your schedule this fall to participate in the Unit 36 (a,b,c) ranch clean-up that Arizona Hunters Who Care and the G&F put on. It gives you a chance to drive around the unit, and also you can get to know a few folks who regularly hunt the area. The G&F Wildlife Manager for 36A (Gabe) is very involved in this effort, and usually camps-out for the weekend. It's a great opportunity to pick his brain for up to date info on the unit. Best of all, you can pick-up some trash and help keep things clean! The next trash clean-up weekend will be on October 22nd. S.

I'm not sure of all the details, but on page 8 of the regulations it says that first come first serve applications are accepted by mail after August 8th.... S.

Tough break on getting skunked again Allen! I got a unit 6A archery cow elk tag, and NO deer tag. I had such a good time last year on my first archer elk hunt (cow), that I thought I'd go at one again. My 10 year old drew his second choice for both elk & deer. He'll be doing the junior 6A cow hunt in mid October, and the Kiabab junior hunt in November. I'm VERY excited for him. S.
-
I didn't get a deer tag this year, but things still worked-out almost perfectly for me.... Even though I didn't get drawn for rifle deer, I got a 6A North archery cow elk tag. In addition to this though, my son got both of his second choice junior hunts, which means that he will be on the junior cow hunt in 6A in mid-October, and up on the Kiabab for the junior hunt in November. I'll be chasing the cows with my bow in 6A just two weeks prior to my son's hunt, so hopefully I'll have some good locations scouted for his hunt. I'm a little bummed that I won't be down south chasing coues with a rifle this fall, but I'm really just as excited that my boy got a couple of good tags. We should have a couple of really good hunts together this fall! Good luck to those folks I know who will be down in the 36's! No coues for me this year.... Congrats to all with tags, and condolences to those with nothing. S.

I think the meeting is actually at 6:30. I checked the agenda, but it didn't have an official start time listed though.... I'll be there somewhere around 6:15ish. Sportex is located at 2020 W. 4th Street in Tempe. I agree with Allen. I hope folks will show-up to hear for themselves & get any questions answered. Need to get it all out on the table, make a decision (to support, or not...), and MOVE ON! S. PS: I wish folks would also show-up at ANY of the monthly meetings to just participate in general. Come hear about some of the great things we have planned for kids this fall!

When I was a kid we had a dog that was so ugly that it won 2nd place in the Arizona Daily Star's (Tucson paper...) ugly dog contest. This heinous thing would have blown my old pooch out of the water though. Someone please put it out of our misery!!!! S.

I'm sure it's all in how you were raised. I count only main points (not eyeguards), and only mention both sides if there is a difference in the numbers. Eg; I call a 4x4 with eyeguards, a 4 point. If it has 3 on one side, and 4 on the other then I would call it a 3x4. This is likely because I was raised here in AZ hunting muleys, and we always used 'western count'. I remember once when I was a kid, my cousin from Missouri told me on the phone that he killed an 8 point whitetail. I was so excited to see the picture, but imagine my dissapointment when I got the pic and it was a measly 3 point + eyeguards... S.

Thanks for the input on the visla Scott. Yes, it is my buddy from Tucson, and he's been working his two dogs pretty good. He said his female is really coming-up nice, and his big male had a great year. He's been buying birds and getting them out on them on occasion, and has been bugging me to come down & join him. Might have to do that some day... Be sure to post some more pics of the little guy! S. -

Wow Scott, that pup's a looker for sure.... Our family dog died over a year ago, and if my kids see that picture, I'm sunk! Seems like every week they're bugging me to get a puppy! Scot, Doug, anyone; what are your honest opinions of vislas? A buddy of mine, who is fairly new to bird dogs, has aquired two of them over the past couple of years and it looks like he's going to maybe breed them in the next year or so. He's promised my kids a free pup from the litter. OK bird dogs? OK 'kid' dogs? Any opinions would be appreciated. S.
