2006 Kodiak Alaska Trip
stanley replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
You're shots anchored the two bucks just like your story and pics anchored my rear to my seat while I enjoyed each pic! Glad you had a great trip Doug! I'll call you with a report on last weekend's deer exploits down south. Nothing too exciting.... one 'last day' buck taken. Sincere congrats on a great Alaskan adventure! S. -
Great story and outstanding pics as usual. Thanks much for sharing! S.

Casey's first Scalies..

Very cool pictures Scott. Good to see those dogs having some serious fun! Nice shooting Casey! I've run into some way high in the steep mountains down there a time or two. One of these days I might have to take my new pup up in there for a hike. Deer this weekend! S. -
I'm originally from Kearny, but now live in Phx. Used to hunt the southern portion of 24A quite a lot in the old days. Still like to get up there every now & then. An old highschool buddy has the Nov coues tag so I may be up there a bit with him if I can get away.... S.

One of my favorite parts of helping with the Youth Camps is being able to take pictures of the kids with their deer. Nothing like seeing a proud young hunter come through camp grinning from ear to ear! Hopefully we'll get a chance to meet in a few weeks down south Jeff. I'll be camping at the ADA Junior Camp in 36A. I'll likely be in the field with my boy during the day, but will be at the camp in the evenings. Each junior hunter for that unit will be getting a letter with a map of the camp in the next week or so (in addition to the letter that Gabe sent a couple of weeks ago). Should be a fun hunt. S.

Awesome! I know several of us from this board are taking our kids out on Junior hunts in the coming weeks. Good stuff for sure!!! S. -
Good luck Marshal!!! I'll be down south this weekend as well! S.

36C early hunt for me next weekend, and then 36A Junior tag for my son in November. Can't wait for either one!!! Good luck all! S.

Hey Chris: Thanks for your interest! Per my separate e-mail, I'm working on confirming the question on space. Gabe is usually pretty good about picking spots, but I'll let you know when I confirm with him. Thanks again, S.

If anyone gets a chance to join this camp, you should! This hunt, and the junior javelina hunt in the winter are always a good time. Matt Pierce (the WM for 20C) and some great Junior ADA veterans have been running the Jr. Camps up there for a few years, and it's always a good time. With Terry joining, and them taking 18B into the mix, it should be great! I hope they get a lot of kids stopping in! As you know I'll be in 36A, but good luck up there Terry!!! S. PS: Lest anyone thinks Terry and I are running competing Jr. Camps, be assured that we are partnering in this thing in the name of the ADA and other volunteer orgs. It's awesome to see the interest that Terry is bringing to the program.

Should be a good time! Each junior hunter who was drawn for this hunt will be getting a letter from the ADA inviting them to stop by. A map of the area will be included which of course shows details of the camp location. Good luck on the hunt all! I know my boy is seriously excited about having a buck tag. He really wants a set of horns (of any size!) to go on the wall. Hopefully we'll be able to glass one up. S.

Greetings all: The Arizona Deer Association will be hosting a Junior Deer Hunter camp during the opening weekend of the 36A Junior hunt this year. The camp will be open from the evening of 11/16 through mid-morning on 11/19. The primary focus of the camp is to provide information and hospitality to the young hunters who have this tag. This will include complementary coffee & cocoa in the mornings, as well as hotdogs, burgers, chips, sodas & water during the lunch and dinner hours. The camp location is .8 miles NW of Arivaca Road, on the Batamote road. I'll try to post a map. If you can spare some time to come hang-out, the help would be greatly appreciated! These camps are a fun way to spend a weekend, especially when the kids start coming through their success (and other...) stories. If you have this tag, please feel free to stop in and say hello In addition, you are welcome to camp along with us at the ADA site for the weekend to enjoy company, campfire talk & hunting information exchange, and a little bit of cooking. I'll be at the camp, but will not be able to spend much time hosting/helping-out because my son has the permit for this hunt. Due to this, I'll likely be spending my time in the field with him chasing deer! I'll be around during the evenings though. So far we have commitment from representatives of the AZ G&F, ADA, SCI, and Arizona Hunters Who Care. Hope to see some of you there! Stan

I like the information in this topic. I have only hunted coues in October. Most of the action I have been fortunate enough to get into during October has been bachelor groups. A couple of buddies and I are hiking into a fairly un-familiar canyon during the early hunt this year. Scouted an area approx. 2.5 hrs in from a road for a spike camp. Hoping to get some solitude, but who knows.... S.

Good Pack Needed ASAP!!!

Hey Christian: I just got a new J104 (plus the spike camp duffel) last week. I can't wait to use it. Adjusts from 2200 to 4000+ easily (6000+ with the spike duffel). I love the rifle holder as well. I got it direct from Eberlestock. Good luck! S. -
Got into lots of birds this weekend in our old haunts. Not as many as last year, but last year was an anomaly... Still enough to limit on, although they seemed a little warier than some years so the limits weren't easy. Overall, a GREAT opening weekend! I mainly focused on hunting with my 12 year old. It's amazing to see how they mature from year to year and I'm now more & more comfortable sending him out on his own for short periods of time as opposed to constantly looking over his shoulder. Good fun! S.

Nice mass man! Thanks for sharing.... S.

I would tend to agree with missedagain on this. At least with gambels it should be a fair year, especially in the areas with good water. Anyone with some honey holes should do fairly well in their usual haunts. I know I'm planning on a limit. Good luck all! S.

I was in NE Utah this past weekend as well, joining some old college buddies for their elk hunt. We stayed in Manila Utah, and I snuck away to fish Little Hole on the Green twice. Had a great time and caught some nice browns. One was close to 20, and the rest mainly in the slot. Beautiful country up there!!!! Thanks for sharing the pics. I'll try to post a couple of my own when I get a chance to up-load them from the camera. S.

Doug & Bret know...... Hunt high, or hunt low. Deer to be found either way.... S.
-
Mike gave you the best advice. Check-out the G&F website, hunting unit reports section. Look at the ranch roads that they list. Any one of them will get you to the foot of the mountains, then all you have to decide is whether to hunt high (hiking your butt off ) or hunt low (with the masses ). There will be deer to be found with either choice. S.

I've met a few good folks from this site. Always fun/interesting to put a face to the screen handle. A central meeting place would be nice. Another idea would be to connect it to a volunteer event? Arizona Hunters Who Care sponsors a ranch clean-up in the 36's in the spring that is a blast. LOTS of folks turn-out, and it is a great cause if folks don't mind taking the drive south. It's really not that far; only a couple of hours south of Phx. This is where I've met a couple of CW folks already.... S.
