I'm hoping she'll be ready Doug! We've had her out in the field with her mom & pop a couple of times this spring just cruising around the hills, and she definitely seems to have the nose for it. She is still a bit rowdy though, and is quite a ways off from following some of the rules (honoring other dog's points, etc...). We're actually going to take her out this weekend with the .22s to try to continue getting her acclimated to gun-fire. Her mom & pop are going to join us for our annual Southern Utah camping trip this year, and I think we're going to buy some birds to take up and shoot while there. That will be her first real test. Honestly, I'll confess that we're struggling a bit with the 'family dog' vs. 'hunting dog' thing. With my busy schedule, it's hard to make enough time to really train her hard. Hopefully she'll end-up doing ok though. I'll try to post some pictures of her on the board soon. She's a sweetie! S.

I've owned two beagles in my life, and the fact that these two are FREE should tell everyone something about those little suckers. Seriously though, beagles are great dogs for the right home. Rambunctious little things that like lots of space..... We aquired a vizsla this year, so no room for any other dogs at our house now. I hope they find a good home. S.

Replied to your post on the other site Backcountry. Not a bad idea to post here to ensure some more folks see it though. In answer to your final question on this forum though; If it were between muleys in 37B or coues anywhere, I would just stick with coues if I were you! Good luck. I hope you get some more info. PM me if you would like to talk in more details about some potential spots in 37B. I've got a couple of old favorite honey holes that I'd rather not share in public, but that I would give-up in private. Regards, S.

Flagstaff area CWT get together BBQ!

I might try to make it up as well. A friend of mine has a 5B south elk tag and wanted me to go scouting with him that weekend, but I'll try to make it. So exactly where will the party be? The FS link posted above seems to indicate that the "Lakeview Campground" is the closest to Marshal Lake. Is this where folks will be, or will there be a primitive set-up somewhere closer to the lake? S. -
Why are tag fees increasing? My guess is inflation..... ;-) Interesting information you are presenting here. I don't pretend to know the in's-n-out's of the G&F finances, but it seems to me that you could pick apart almost any big organization's finances to find things that appear to make no sense. Easy to do when it's not your job and you are just looking at a micro level example of their spending. I don't know, but I suspect that the salary expense for the department is not the biggest drain on their budget. My guess is that as in most industries, salaries are likely set based on comparison's to similar positions & jobs in that particular field. If the Range Masters are making more than the WM's, then it's likely due to market forces.... There are many trades that don't require an education beyond highschool that make more than the G&F WMs. "Also with the twelve employees of which 4 are part times the total cost of wages for the range is roughly $340,000 just for the main range, this doesnt inculde all those other range master that work at the clay target center and such. Which means based on the 340k in just wages that the range needs over 64k people to show up and pay the $5 shooting fee, which means over 186 people a day for 365 days a year, With factoring in that their not open 7 days a week like the Rio saladio shooting range means that they have to pull in over 220 poeple a opening day to just break even on coving the payroll." With this argument, you are making the assumption that the range's are run as individual 'profit' centers, meaning that each operation must be self funded. I'm guessing that the G&F does not operate under that model. If that is what you expect, then I would think that the ranges would close-down, and we would all be forced to go to private ranges (or pay the same fee as at a private range...). Is that what you want? I like the idea that I can take my kids to the range and pay a nominal fee to use it as opposed to a private operation. I personally am not surprised or turned-off by the increase in tag fees. It has happened before, and it will happen again IMO. S. :-)

Awesome pics! Thanks for sharing! Luckily we didn't have to come-up with a solution such as yours for these pics. Just a couple of pics from one of our family camping trips last year. Getting ready to gear-up for another summer of fun right now!!! S.

I agree 100% TJ! The pics with the kids are the BEST!!! Congrats on a great fishing trip Lance. S.

this country has gone to hell!

Hmm.... didn't think of that. I guess he kind of did quote you then. I agree that 'you know whats' can mean many things. Called my kids a bunch of 'you know whats' just this morning by the way.... Little rascals are hard to control on a Friday morning sometimes.... S. -
Outstanding pics Lance! Thanks much for sharing. Hey Christian, have you ever been spring turkey hunting before this? What an absolute blast it is, huh??? I went for the first time 4 years ago, and I definitely fell in love with it. Nice to be out hunting in the late spring, as opposed to just dreaming about it as well! Congrats on the success guys! S.

Chill ARIZONA GUIDE..... archeryasu didn't quote you, did he? He was simply calling-out your blanket statement about "that police department" (there, I quoted you....). He never said that you said that departement was a bunch of A-holes...... those were his words, not yours. No offence, but in my opinion if you're going to make a blanket statement about a department like that, then you better be prepared to take a come-back. In fact, I don't recall db17 even mentioning the name of the specific police department, but you're making a negative statement about "that police department"??? If I had a bad experience with a guide (which I never have.....), would it be fair to lump all guides into the category of "you know whats"??? Just a thought... S. -
Hmm.... Good info elkhunter & downthebarrel. I was thinking that I-17 was the boundary and I would guess that you are correct in that the majority of hunters, like myself, would ignore the west side. Man I wish my boys would have gotten drawn this year. Those cow hunts are a blast for the kids! S.

Two of my buddies scored on 5B tags the exact same way COOSEFAN. They happened to be next on the list (applied together....). Good for them! S.

So what caused him to choose muleys? Did you guys come accross a big ol' 4X4 on your last hunt? I know that where I like to hunt in the 36's we frequently see muleys. I'll confess that I've considered putting in for a muley tag in my unit of choice since they're offered at the same time. Oh, how I long for the good ol' "any antlered deer" tag!! Have fun and shoot a BIG one. S.

Good info archeryasu. I'm keying in on one particular word in the regulation you posted; "may". It "may" be illegal..... Important to know the land status of where you're hunting, as I would guess that the "may" word comes into effect depending on whether your on state land, Forrest Service land, private land, or BLM land (did I miss any?). S. PS: Great pics acuritone! Thanks for sharing..... -
Outstanding pictures. Thanks much for sharing! I went to college in SLC, and I'm still in love with the state. Get up there at least once per year for camping/fishing/hunting. Thanks again! S.

Good luck up there Pinalmtnman! My son had this tag a couple of years ago. We didn't get him one, but we had a great time!! If you want to get away from the people, just hike a bit off the road. Maybe try the Pinegrove or Rattlesnake quiet areas. Lots of elk in both, and hardly any people. Have fun!!! S.
-
Coming from someone that does not own one, my recomendation would be to find the most quiet model possible! Nothing like getting up into the woods for some nice quiet camping..... S.

Sounds like you're definitely living the dream life Bill. Good luck in Africa! I have the same types of memories of Greer as many of you. Earliest memories would have been in 70-75 or so. We would always hit Molly Butlers for prime rib dinner one night while on our annual White Mountain camping trip. Sometimes we would even get rooms for a night. Thought that was pretty cool as a little kid.... Then in the late 70s-83 or so, my trips were mainly with my buddies on camping trips in high school. LOT'S of fun then! We would camp at Hoyer to appease our moms (so they knew exactly where we would be.... ), but we would then just tromp all over the Big Lake, Black River, and Bauldy area fishing from sun-up to sun-down! Spinning rods and grasshoppers! Any where from four to seven boys from 13-18 years old with nothing to do but fish. Good times for sure.... Now I'm taking my wife & kids up there for family camping trips each year. We still hit Molly Butlers and still fish the same creeks on Bauldy. Seems like the brookies are a little smaller these days, but it's still a blast. We've shopped cabins there on occasion over the years, but it seems like we always come to the conclusion that due to our busy schedules that we wouldn't get to use it enough to justify the purchase. Maybe when I retire, like Bill! S.

Similar to others, I have not had any problems there. Four or five years hunting 36A & C. Deer & javelina seasons, and I've never had a 'run-in'. I usually camp in an area where there are other camps in close proximity if possible, but other than that I just kind of keep an eye on stuff & keep things locked-up. Seen a few illegals from a distance in the flats, but they're usually truckin south -> north within a few miles of the highway (usually, not always... ). I've seen more illegals during the ranch clean-ups for some reason. Speaking of trash, that's what bothers me a bit more. Lots of it piles-up quickly in the obvious spots. S.

I'm heading-up this weekend for some turkey hunting. Hoping to get my son a shot at one! I was assuming there would be no snow up high this year, especially this late, but just wanted to double check. Has anyone been up there lately? Any snow way up high, or is it as dry as I'm assuming it to be??? S.
-
Well we're back. No turkeys killed, but lots of good times. Weather was a challenge, but the fresh snow just added to the adventure... I'll try to post a story and pics sometime soon. ichiban43, we definitely saved you a bird! There were lots up there, but they were VERY silent for the most part during our hunt. Likely the weather was impacting them (low pressure, wind, snow, etc..). Hopefully they'll be a little noisier for your hunt next week! I'm actually going to try to maybe get away for another couple of quick days prior to the season ending if possible. Good luck! S.
-
Congrats on the bird! My son and I were in 12A this past weekend, but didn't get a bird. Had a good time though! S.
-
Thanks much guys!!! "birds everywhere" primetime???? Dang-it man, now how in the heck am I supposed to concentrate on work tomorrow!!!! Can't wait! This is one of the things I love about this sight. No malice, no BS, no "chips on shoulders" (for the most part.... ), just good helpful & friendly folks! Good stuff guys. I'll share a story when I get back. Hopefully including a pic of a dead gobbler, but knowing that country I suppose I'll get some spectacular photos either way.... Thanks again, S.

Congrats on the turkey Brian! I was invited spring turkey hunting for the first time three seasons ago, and I was immediatly hooked! What a blast!!! My boy and a I are headed-up to the Kiabab this weekend for the late hunt. Hopefully we'll have a little luck. Still learning the ropes of spring turkey hunting, but that's the fun part. S.

OUTSTANDING TROY!!! Congratulations on your turkey and thanks for sharing the story! My son Erik and I are heading-up to the Kiabab this weekend for a turkey hunt, and we can't wait. Best regards to you & your father on your future hunts!!! S.
