HOW....a hunt with 150 tags and I am 151
stanley replied to elkhutnaz's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Hmm.... Interesting. Probably should call G&F if you really want an answer. I think that if there is a situation where there are only 2 tags left, but an application with 4 folks on it comes in, they will generally issue tags to all 4 therefor exceeding the prescribed number by a couple. Maybe several other hunters put in on a single application just before yours? Maybe the '1st come 1st served' thing for the left-overs leaves them with a little lattitude? Again, if you really want an answer you should simply call the G&F. Sounds like there are some sour grapes over the new building! S. -

I'd like to start a debate.....about points....
stanley replied to Coues 'n' Sheep's topic in The Campfire
Looking at the results of the poll so far, it's looking like the majority DON'T cound the eye guards! Where I was raised (Kearny) that buck is a 3 point. If he had a different number of points on each side, then we would call him a 3x2 or 3x3, etc... We would NEVER count the eye guards! S. -
Wow Amanda!!! That looks like great fun! Soooo nice & cool up there this time of year! I'm jealous, as I haven't made it to the White Mountains this summer! Thanks for the pics! S.

Doug has posted some good links. I'll PM some info to you also. I'm no expert in 36A, but I have been involved in the youth hunts down there for several years now. As mentioned, there is usually a very good junior camp hosted by several organizations (SCI, AZ Hunters Who Care, AZ G&F, ADA, etc..). Good information and camping company at that camp for someone who is new to the area! I will once again be there with kids in tow... As has been mentioned, there are plenty of deer in 36A (hense the large number of oveall permits...). Lance's comments are also spot on!! Looks like I'll be down there in a BIG way this year also! Myself, and all three of my kids (as well as another friend and his kids...) all got 36A tags. Some of us for the general hunt and some for the Juniors only hunt. Gonna be a busy November! As always, it will be piled on top of school obligations, dance classes, pop-warner games, etc.!! Watch for a flyer from G&F and/or SCI regarding the Junior's camp! Good luck! S.

Myself, and all three of my children got 36A tags (Nov hunt for my oldest son & I, and the Junior hunt for my two youngest). Should be a fun couple of weeks!!! S.

So last week we spent 5 days in Southern Utah camping. My three kids & myself meet an old friend of mine from Salt Lake every year to take the kids camping. Over the years we've explored various spots in Southern Utah & Southern Colorado. It's always a good time. The past couple of years we've been focusing around the Panguitch, Utah area. VERY nice country with lots of hiking, biking, fishing, caving, deer & antelope watching, cooking, eating, etc., etc.... This year, it was three dads & 7 kids! Lots of fun to be had!!!!!!! This is why I've missed the ADA Dinner the past couple of years. I'm bummed to miss it, but this trip is such a tradition for my old buddy and our children that I couldn't miss it! Below are a few pics! Crossing at Marble Canyon on the way to Utah. From there we quickly drove up and through the Kiabab, stopping to let the dog run in the forest for a bit... Thirsty after setting-up camp a few hours later! Kids insisted on fishing the first evening (after driving many hours from Phx and setting-up camp!). Caught a few and had some fun! Bigfoot stories!!!! Cooking chorrizo the next morning!!! We ate some VERY good food from the dutch ovens & other through the weekend. Great breakfasts, amazing fresh trout/fish tacos, venison pot-roast with the trimmings, peach cake, etc. Yum! Sleepy Dogs! They had a great time to!! Waiting-out a thunderstorm! We had great cool/wet weather for a couple of days, and then a few days of great sunny/cool temps! Perfect! A great evening of fishing! More fish tacos!! Ready for a caving expedition! There are many outstanding lava shoots & tubes in the general area. The kids and Troy had a great time! I used the excuse that I had to tend the dutch-oven dinner that afternoon. (I HATE caves!!!) Found what they were looking for on the way home Sunday! Back in AZ at Glen Canyon! Now it's off to San Diego for a week!!!! Happy summer all! S.

Holy heck Lance! That thing looks huge!!! S.

Hey Doug: I thought you might recognize the lake! This is our third year in this particular spot. The camping spot we've been using is actually a few miles East and slightly North of the lake. As you know, there are many FS roads through the Dixie forest in that area. Lots of room to camp with NO neighbors and hence lots of room to shoot BB guns and run the dogs! This year was 'greener' than in past years due to more May/June rain then normal. We fished Navajo, Duck Creek, and Panguitch Lake. Good fun all over the place! Plenty of wildlife spotted through the week also! S.

Those are outstanding pics WOODSAZ!! Thanks for sharing! I also posted some pics from a camping trip with the kids to Southern Utah! A couple of years ago we went to the Durango/Silverton area. Your post inspires me to explore Southern Colorado a bit more! S.

This is an outstanding thread all!!!! Thanks so much for the honest quality reviews!! I'm hoping to buy some 'big glass' this fall, and I'll use this info for sure!!!! S.

Arizona Wildlife Federation awards
stanley replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Conservation Group Events
Very cool Amanda!!! These types of awards aren't just handed-out willy/nilly! It takes commitment and dedication over time to be recognized like this, and you should be proud of him!!! (which you obviously are!) Kudos to Paul!!!! S. -
Baboquivari- Elk Horn Fire Effect?
stanley replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
+ 1 Allen (kind of....). As we all know, that area is different then the Kiabab so the growth and deer movement might be a bit different, but in general I agree with what you (and others) have said. In the mid-long term, this will absolutely NOT hurt that area. In fact, as you and I (and Doug & others) know, it will be VERY nice to be able to hike into some of those areas without getting your skin chewed-on by that CATCLAW!!! Anyone try to hump it into Brown in the past few years??? Time will tell, but I suspect that this is not the worst thing for some of those steep moutains! S.
