if it tells you anything I've had to put my pb & j down to shoot at critters. I pack a real lunch, but focus on no noise food, i tend to avoid chips and things with noisy wrappers. I dont use pee bottle either. Ive wizzed outta tree stands and ground blind with no issues from animals smelling me.

extreme tuning + extreme practice = Extreme confidence You can get fixed to fly as good and group w/ your field points. Laser Tuning at a bow shop wont cut it. Start on paper. Then walk Back tuning. Then Group tuning. When your done it'll be throwing darts and you wont lose energy to a deployment mechanism. Best of luck

Kind of an archers MOA type of thing. Mulies vitals are indeed a good bit larger on our southern deer to the tune of 30 sq. in. or so. I tend to compare Pronghorn and coues vitals as roughly the same (approx 6" h x 8" w square), whereas mulies have maybe a 8" H x 10" kill zone on the conservative side. The idea being if you can hold 1" per 10 yard grouping (2" groups @ 20yards, 3" @ 30...etc), you should be able to shoot mulies farther than a coues.

Ulmer Edge Broadhead by Trophy Taker

ran some interesting hypothetical numbers on Archers advantage and the archery program last night. At 30 lbs w/ a 23-23 in draw on a hypothetical mathews ignition with a Gold tip 3555 arrow and 100 gr broadhead i was getting 16 lbs of kinetic energy at the bow. My pellet gun delivers the same kinetic energy. Do i believe this can take a coues or a pig, yes, but circumstances NEED to be ideal. However using the same arrow and going up to 40 lbs yielded only 21 lbs of KE. I say user beware, stay away from bones, any questionable distance or shot placement can lead to terrible results. I bowhunted at the age of 10 and had no issues meeting the standard of 40 lbs at that time. Did i shoot a lot, yes. Did i shoot at animals over 20 yards, no. My little Alpine colt with a fixed 2 blade broadhead managed to kill a mule deer and that was 1994 technology.

assuming you have a chrono, shoot arrows through it at various ranges to determine K.E. at said distances. Exactly like bullets, heavy resists wind and maintains k.e. better. Fixed blades penetrate better. As for determining max range, its between you and you conscience. The way i determine is being able to hold a group the size of the vitals of the critter im going after under field conditions with broadheads. to be able to deliver consistanly one must treat it like match rifle shooting. You need match grade equipment, tuning, and "ammo," not shelf garbage. quality fita shooters can hold amazing groups at 90m in the wind w/ recurves. It takes an immense amount of work, both with equipment and form to achieve this. The big thing is develop your skills and equipment and be honest with yourself, just like anything else.

everybody makes a pretty good arrow. I tend to like an arrow that is around 9.5 grains per inch / 6-7 grains per pound of draw weight. this tends to be a moderate setup. good combo of speed and energy with easy tuning for fixed blades. Another thing to consider is finished F.O.C. That may change your weight/broadhead scheme. there is always gonna be brand fanboys, but genearally buy the best "bow bullets" you can.

awesome, love the monochrome background. Nicely done

Berger VLD vs Barnes TTSX
elpepe25 replied to azcoueshuntr's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
The theory of fast expanding bullets has worked well with varmint hunters for years. Not many coyotes take another step after the violent impact of one of these bullets. I do not see why this cannot be applied to bigger critters with larger caliber and some toughening of bullets. I am not a lung eater, so something that glitters and shreds lungs.. i like. (Hypothetically) The 1200 ft lbs that exits a critter in the form of a pretty mushroom delivers no more hydrostatic shock (the thing that kills critters and drops them), and dumps its excess energy elsewhere besides the animal. Over penetration does nothing for you with a rifle with the exception of adding another hole and a better blood trail. I am sure that success can be had with the ttsx, and it’s proven. But I am also sure an FMJ with good placement is a killer too. But once again over penetration does nothing for you. Rapidly expanding bullets create a larger temporary and permanent wound channel via many small wound channels. They utilize the energy more completely and efficiently. The expansion of a solid or bonded bullet is maybe 3 times the original diameter, tops. However with an rapidly expanding-fragmenting bullet the overall surface area gain is huge, therefore delivering more energy over a larger area. -
just picked up a scott "black hole" from a fellow on here...and im loving it so far. One of the most comfy back tension releases ive shot

Berger VLD vs Barnes TTSX

im a fan of the berger, then the a-max due to the high BC not a barnes fan, energy wasted on the hillside behind the critter does me no good. -
