    CAN'T WAIT!!!

Hey GMM Sounds like Your '' Pumped'' and ready to go! I was wondering what kind of bows you shoot ? It sounds like you are like me and you shoot all the time.I usually don`t shoot every day, but, I do shoot every week. Where do You guys go to shoot these 3d shoots? Maybe You could email me and I could come over there sometime and go to one of those shoots. Are they strictly instintive or what? Basically, I shoot targets, rabbits, and whatever else I can find to practice on. Hey good luck this year Coues Addict

    BC Entry

Idahoecoueshunter My feeling on this is that, if You think You want to enter the buck, Then do it! I personally think that it is pretty cool that you actually found that lion kill. It makes you realize how many Buck`s actually never get entered. It also let`s you know that there are good genes in that area, so thats pretty cool also. My brother in law killed a 138 5/8'' Coues buck several years back. It is an awesome trophy an 8 x 11 nontypical with really good mass and he never has entered it, I guess its`s just a matter of personal opinion. I, like Rembrandt, think other people really like to know about that stuff, and also why don`t you send Amanda some pictures.Ya, pictures, pictures, us CWT members love pictures. Good Luck in the fall draw. Coues Addict

    Draw Results?

Jason I think Mike is right to check on the tenth, but I think the official day is June 24th, according to the regs that they sent me. I sure hope some of us CWT members get drawn over there. Good luck Coues addict

    CAN'T WAIT!!!

Josh Ya, I know what you mean, I have also been shooting my bow lately. I have an embankment that sit exactly 83 yards from my back porch. I would probably never shoot that far at an animal, but, I actually put an 83 yd. sight pin on and have been shooting a target! I am grouping about 12"-16'' at 83 yards. I am realizing that any wind makes a huge differance with carbon arrows, but its still a kick in the butt.I have got my groups at fifty yards down to around 4''- 6'' fairly consistently. I hope I get to go this Dec. or maybe next January.Good luck in the Draw and maybe You will be writing another awesome hunt story for all of us to enjoy, but this time, maybe with Your bow! how's huntin in unit 32?

Dodger Yes, I am from California, (Please don`t hate me!) but P.E.T.A. sucks and I hate Treehuggers! '' I just had to say that! '' I don`t know if a big white Dodge rings a bell or not! Usually I pretty much camp with my son or my brother in law and we usually don`t camp to close to anybody. Last season I helped two of my buddies from San Diego in the October hunt and we camped in a spot that never used to have many people but ''wow'' last season it was a pretty popular spot. Hey, I do resemble the remark of ''older'' but what can I say. I try not to think about that when I am hunting, Oh man, now I`m bummed. I sure hope its a good draw year! Good Luck Coues Addict

    What's the method

CouesSlayer Shed hunting is just like any other kind of hunting! the more effort You put into it, the more You will probably get out of it. I seem to find sheds in creek bottoms, Oak flats, anywhere it looks like a good ambush spot for lion`s etc. Shed Hunting is really a great way to get to know an area and it`s really neet when You do find a shed because You know a Buck was standing right there! at one time. For me it`s really just a good excuse to get out of the house and do some pre season scouting. Usually brown sheds are this past season , but it depends on if it was out in the sun, under a tree, behind a rock, or covered up partially. usually brown sheds are really fresh one`s. Good Luck Coues Addict P.S. I like em all though!

    ARIZONA GUIDE

Arizona Guide Happy Birthday, My computer has been down for about a week so I missed the big day! Sorry! I truly hope You had a great birtyhday and an awesome draw this year so You can harvest a monster and write a cool hunting story for us all to read. I have read all of the hunt stories at least five or six times. I don`t know about You, but, I need more inspiration the older I get! Again, Happy Birthday!!!!!!!! Coues addict

    how's huntin in unit 32?

wildcats I put in almost every year for unit 32 as my first choice. Thats not to say it is the best area, it is the area that I know best. 32 is a large zone and there are certain areas with many hunters. If you ask 50 members which is there favorite unit you may get 25 to 30 different answers. Unit 32 is a very diverse unit and has many different types of habitat, prairie lowlands, rolling hills with oaks, tall rugged nasty mountains with remote canyons, I have had some luck in all these areas. I truly believe that every unit has record book potential! This is just my opinion, and its up to us as hunters to find the animals. As far as how to hunt this area, thats easy, Glass, Glass, Glass, and then glass some more. I personally try to get as far off the road as I personally can and I rarely ever see another hunter in the immediate area that I am hunting.I know one thing for sure ,by putting distance from the roads you will virtually eliminate about 90% of the rest of the hunters and then if you do run into someone way back in some remote canyon its probably one of us CWT members. If you see some ugly old dude with a white mustache and he`s not giving you any obscene sign language than go ask him his name. Good luck and I hope this helps. P.S. If he says Rich Thompson, don`t worry he wont shoot ya! Good luck in the Draw Coues Addict

    group or single??

Doug/Red Rabbit Hey Doug thanks for clearing all that up. I think I will keep putting in like I have been for the last few years. My son is married now and we have been putting in seperate for the last few years with the agreement that if we don`t get drawn together we will go together anyway as long as the hunts are not at the same time. It makes it kinda neat when we plan the seperate hunts because we seem to learn the areas better and we get out for more than just one big trip. Who ever gets the tag is '' The Man'' and the other guy is ''The Mule''. I like either. Thanks again Coues Addict

    Draw odds getting worse!

Ernesto I love your prayer man. Thats exactly what we all need to do is leave it up to the Lord. I have always applied for the October 4 day hunt as my second choice because I believe it helps my odds, but, Who Knows? I like Rembrandt`s idea On the hunter safety too. Myself and my son have taken both Ca. and Az. hunter safety courses. I learned some new and different things from each course. I totally agree with Mike`s Idea about paying upfront. I think thats one of the biggest reasons for the lack of extra tags. It is just way to easy for the anti`s and the (not so serious guys) to get a tag. Oh Lord please help me to keep all this in perspective! Amen. Coues addict

    Hunting the Fringe

Backcountry I helped out two of my buddies from San Diego in 2003 in unit 32 last season on the early October hunt. They Both tagged their first Coues bucks. One buck was taken in the typical top of the mountain stuff that you would expect . The other buck I spotted with 3 other bucks in a group of four in a definite lowland fringe area. While my buddy Paul was stalking his buck I spotted eight mulie does and one nice two x three mulie buck about two hundred yards from where I was sitting. I couldn`t believe it. The mulies never spotted us and I found myself watching both groups of deer as the stalk took about an hour. It was really cool. Paul made a nice shot on the Coues Buck and that was that. The fourth day I was helping out my nephew and I spotted two more Coues bucks down in the flats in a totally different area in unit 32 also. He ended up harvesting the larger one of the two. A nice two x three Coues buck. I personally think there is way more coues deer now then when I first started hunting unit 32 some ten or twelve years ago. I hope this helps and good luck in the draw. group or single??

Hey Arizona Guide Please correct me if I am wrong. I must be all screwed up, but, this is the way I always thought it worked. First, bonus points only count on deer in units north of the Colorado river, ie 12a, 12b, 13a, 13b, Etc. Second, If you apply with four people you should divide your chances by four because its a lot easier to fill one tag than four? Third, the first person on the application is the only person that counts on an application with multiple applicants? This is the way I always thought it worked, so I always apply seperately and not with friends or family members. Is there any truth in all this or what? Thanks Coues Addict

    ruger .204

firstcoueswas80 Hey Casey, I heard some stuff about this cartridge but not a whole lot." Ya know " that has always been Weatherby`s philosophy, that if you push a bullet fast enough it will do a tremendous amount of damage. I Have no doubt that even the 32grain bullet would be plenty to kill a Coues Deer, But, shot placement , overall distance and wind would play a major roll in the whole process. You would have to limit your distance and be very good at wind drift judgement. I personally would not want to use that caliber of rifle when there is just so many other good calibers to choose from. I can`t stand the wait untill each season begins and I wouldn`t want to worry about if I am using enough gun. I think it would be better served on predetors and small game, but , time will tell! I think I will stick to my old .270 Thank You Coues Addict
  15. Ernesto Well here`s the way I see it! 300wsm aka Craig Holmes joined first so his name should not change. 300wsm member #264 should be renamed or call him 300wsmII. Thats the way I see it. Amanda probably didn`t realize there was already a member with that name. Now, the next guy that wants that name can be 300wsmIII, and then 300wsmIV. and then , Hey whats wrong with .270 win. or .243win. Hey just kidding. I really think it`s up to Amanda but thanks for asking for my opinion. Good Luck Coues Addict I hehehe

    adequate coues rifle

Shiras I don`t think You will have any problems with Your 06. I don`t know if you hand load or not , but I would try to find bullets from 110 grain to 130 grain range. I personally shoot a .270 and its plenty good out to 400+ yards. I sight in 3'' high @100yds. Most of the time it is not that difficult to get within 400 yards of a Coues buck. In my experiences most shots are in the 200 to 300 yard range, sometimes closer. I know several people that have made much longer shots, but thats not the norm. The 25 -06 is also an excelent Coues rifle, but I wouldn`t go out and buy one unless you just really want to. My son has harvested several Coues bucks with his .243 and it works just fine, one was out there really far, like 600 to 800 yards. It was an amazing shot and we did not have a range finder. But it took a lot of shots to range in on that Buck. As for the 1894 Marlin, I would leave that guy in Oklahoma, but, I am not worth a toot with open sights. well thats my 2 cents worth, and I hope it helps, Good Luck Coues addict

    Flushing -vs- Glassing

billrquimby Bill, I got a kick out of your post on your basic physical condition. I feel for you and I know what you mean. It is definitely tougher to get up on those ridges than when we were 25, but, I think you can do it if you just take things a lot slower than you used to when you were younger! As for the extra pounds, well, look at it this way. You won`t get near as cold as you did when you were lighter and you won`t have to pack as many clothes Right! I know I am thee eternal optimist, but I really just have a fear of dyeing with some stupid disease or in a hospital bed and thats just not were I want to be when my time comes. You can email me if You get a tag and still don`t think you can haul out your buck and I will be willing to help, but we will have to pace ourselves, or maybe we could call Lark and he can put it in his back pocket for us,just kidding Lark! Good Luck Coues Addict
  18. Ok everybody, I got a question for ya. You get drawn for your upcoming coues deer hunt and you hunt hard for several days. Then just when you thought you were going to head back to camp You spot two nice bucks. One a perfectly symetrical buck, The other a nontypical with all kinds of trash on his rack. You think they both would score about the same and they both are definitely shooters. Your not sure but you think they both might be book bucks. You are all alone so only one buck can be harvested. It`s definitely a win, win, situation! Which one would you shoot? I just thought this might be kind interesting Coues Addict

    Typical or Nontypical

Hey Shiras, Welcome to the C.W.T. forum. I hope You enjoy it as much as I do! I am going to New Mexico this year also. I may be in unit 23, but I will have to wait and see how I do in the draw. I hope you tie into a Coues buck " Maybe a huge nontypical " this year. I have never taken an eastern so 131" sounds like a pretty nice buck. Good Luck Coues Addict

    No more Lion Hunt??

coueshunter Hey Allen, I am glad you went to the meeting today. I hope all you guys made a differance. I could not make it, I have been putting in to many hours at work and just to far to drive and just way to tired. I want to thank you for going and representing some of us who couldn`t go. Please keep fighting the anti`s and maybe someday I can legally bring a lion back to Ca. with me. Thanks again Coues Addict

    No more Lion Hunt??

Hey Everyone I don`t think I am going to be at the meeting on the 17th, but, I would if I could. I am sure some of you have heard me say this before, but, We have to fight for our rights to hunt. I live in California, and we had a vote several years back to either keep Mountain lion hunting or to ban it here in Ca. It was voted by the public to ban lion hunting. In my opinion, make no mistake, the anti`s want to ban Lion hunting, and then if they force an election and that gets banned, they will go after some other species. My state is all screwed up and I hate to see Az. go the way of Ca. I urge all of You that can to attend the meeting or call some friends that can go and voice Your opinion`s. You really don`t know what you`ve got till its gone. Thats my 2 cents worth! Thanks Coues Addict
  22. Happy Easter Everyone, I just wanted to wish everyone a really nice Easter Sunday. I thank the Lord Jesus Christ for dieing on the cross and saving basically all humanity and my sorry butt. I am not a super religious person but I am not foolish enough to think that God the father is not in control of all our lives. I just hope I pray the right prayers so maybe I can draw another W.T. tag in 2004. I hope al the CW.com guys and girls do. I think I will pray for all of us on this years draw. Hey, you never know God works in mysterious ways. Coues Addict

    Pre Season Scouting

Treestandman Man do I envy You. I live in Ca., and my preseason scouting is maybe one or two trips to AZ. if I get lucky. I pretty much have to rely on past hunting trips and whatver scouting trips I have made during the year before the season. However, I personally believe that Coues whitetail do not have as big of a range as you might think.I am guessing one to five square miles. I have no scientific facts to back this up but I am sure Amanda could probably shed some light on that theory. I usually try to push back in to some new areas adjacent to the same old areas that I have always hunted. The majority of my actual scouting is done the first day or two of the actual hunt.I do hunt Desert Mulies here in Ca. and I scout them quite often. They have a huge range that basically follows the rain patterns and there super unpredictable. I think thats why I love Coues hunting so much, they are somewhat predictable, Thank God for that!
