Hearing magnifiers
coues addict replied to TREESTANDMAN's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Treestandman I have heard of the walker`s game ear on the outdoor channel. My dad has a satellite TV. It sounds pretty cool, but I don`t know. I will tell you though that 2 or 3 of the last few bucks I have shot in the chocolate mountains I did hear before I saw. I think for us glassers they may work pretty good! My area over here in the Ca. desert is very dry and rocky! it is almost impossible to walk without making quite a bit of noise! they may be just the ticket. Coues Addict P.S. please let me know how they work if you get them -
Couesarcher I, personally think that you just haven`t located the bucks so far. I would try up on the ridge tops and in very open areas at this time of year. Bucks will probably hang together in small bachelor herds. They don`t like dinging their horns while they are in velvet. Try the very top of the mountains and rimrock ledges and I would think you will start finding the bucks. good Luck Coues Addict

Treestandman Yes, you are right. I am not sure how much this year , but it definitely will play some kind of a roll in the years to come. Hopefully not to bad, but I guess we won`t know for a couple of years. maybe more nonresidents will put in for the northern hunts and it will help us whitetail hunters! You never know. Coues Addict

25-06 It all depends on if you put in for a deer tag north of the colorado river. If you didn`t than your chance of drawing will be the same as it always has been because there has never been a cap on tags in units south of the colorado river. On elk it could make a huge differance because it will mean no cap on any units. I hope this answers your question. Coues Addict

Happy Birthday Beto Hey Beto I hope you have a great birthday. I hope you don`t hate me too just because I live in Ca. If you don`t get a tag you can come over to my neck of the woods and buy one over the counter. My dad`s birthday was today also so I know you must be a good guy. Again have a great day! Coues Addict

Hey everybody Wow , I have been working a lot of hours the last few days and I just read most all of the posts on this subject. I told you guys I was a California resident and I haven`t moved in the last few days either. I have always obided by the rules and regulations of any state that I have been fortunate enough to hunt in. I feel hunting is a priveledge. I married a native Arizona girl and all my inlaws live in Az. I would love to move to Arizona some day, but for now its just not in the cards. I do not have a lot of money, but I get by. I think whenever you guys or the state of Arizona gets this worked out if you feel that you will allow nonresidents to hunt in your state than I will come. I have only been drawn for elk 1 time and I missed a bull. I have never applied north of the Colorado River for deer because I never figured I could get a tag. I love hunting Coues deer and that is the main thing I put in for every year. I do think they should make everyone send the money in with their application like they used to. I really think that has hurt you guys. I feel for you guys because if I did live in Az. I would feel that non residents should not have an equal chance at any tag. Thats just the way I feel. I would feel the same way if I lived in Montana or Utah Or Neveda. I have paid nonresident liscence and tag fee`s for some 23 years now so I have donated to some extent. You guys don`t know me but I hope you don`t loose all of your states rights. We lost lion hunting and I am still mad about that too. I think you guys need to organize your thoughts and keep fighting ! Good Luck Coues Addict P.S. I was hopeing someone could find me some good used Az. plates

Hey Lark I just wanted you to know that I am a California resident and I have been hunting Arizona for about twenty three years now. I have never had a problem with the 10% non resident cap. In my humble opinion , there was nothing wrong with the old system and it did not need fixing! I never have been on a guided hunt in Arizona but it sounds like you are a guide and that you work hard for your clients. I don`t quite understand why you would be mad at all nonresidents? It seams to me that guides in Arizona would get more clients from out of state hunters than residents that know the area? I recently recomended a guide from Arizona for a friend of mine that drew a bull elk tag two years ago. My freind was very pleased with this guide and the hunt went well. Am I missing something here? Am I out of line? Maybe you could e -mail me or something and explain it in more detail. Anyway I hope you have good luck in this years draw!Coues Addict

Hey everybody I have 4 coues hunting videos two of northstar productions, Western Whitetail, Western Whitetail Two, Phantoms of the High Sierra, The Coues is King. I was wondering if any of you have seen these and if there are any others that I am not aware of ? I really like the way they did coues is king and I have watched it about 50 times already. I also get a huge kick out of ghosts of the high sierra because those guys can`t shoot for s_ _ t. But , its entertaining as all heck! Western Whitetail, and Western Whitetail Two are also very good and you can tell they are done by hunting guides that have been around a while. Do any of you guys know of any other coues deer videos? thanks Coues addict

lion killed buck
coues addict replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
KGAINES In my humble opinion I think Coues deer love to feed in very open areas. They like the fact that they can see all around them and it gives them a chance to escape most predators in plenty of time if needed. They also love burn areas because of the new growth and I have seen them roll in fairly fresh ashes, I believe as a flea and tick powder if you will.( Natures pest control dust). Lion kills that I have found are usually in creek beds and steep canyons that are usually good ambush areas. Usually these same areas hold water! the fringe areas you refer to also make sense to me as possible ambush sites. I once had a lion come right up behind me while bowhunting in Utah. I was watching some deer out in an open area just as you are refering to. The lion probably was doing the same thing. It surprised me but I actually heard him come up behind me. He got to around 10 feet. I raised up and off he went. Whew! I think your logic is sound but the deer still have to go to water or in some other areas to get all of there needs. Good luck in the draw this year. Coues Addict P.S. I can`t wait to find out! -
lion killed buck
coues addict replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Idahocoueshunter I believe you are absolutely correct. The solitary nature of the coues buck is unfortunately one of his few weakness`s. I usually find more lion killed bucks than does also. I think the coues does are like my wife and her friends, they are always sitting around gabbing while us guys are alone watching some stupid hunting video or reloading shells for are up and coming deer hunts. Good luck in this years draw. Coues Addict -

K Gaines I don`t own any trail camera`s yet either but I would like to invest in a few. I do think though that you are really overthinking this whole thing. I believe that you have just as much right to hunt in or around a particular area as the next guy. I also think that you must be a very considerate and honest person. Most people wouldn`t have given it a second thought if they saw someone`s camera`s. I would probably just move on to another area out of respect for the fact that another guy or gal beat me to the punch on that particular area. Sometimes though I see people in areas that I have never seen a person before and I just think "well, maybe they finally figured out that this is a good area too''. I have to agree with TAM and say that a note is not necessary. I would just move on and not worry about it. I also agree that if you use cameras a lot that something is probably bound to happen eventually. Sometimes if I actually see someone in an area that I want to hunt I ask them what there plan is so that I can either change my plan or let them know how I was going to hunt a particular area so that we don`t screw each others hunt up. Usually I find they weren`t going to hunt the same way, or time, or something and it all works itself out. I hope you have good luck with your trail cameras and good luck in this years draw Coues Addict

Doug/Red Rabbit Man you got me drooling over that gun you were talking to azshooter about. I am not sold on the short mags at all,but I really love winchester mod 70`s in super grade. I would buy one in .300 win mag if I could . I bought one ten years ago in .338 win. mag. for elk and I really love it. The only thing is that soon as I get a new gun , it seems like I cannot draw a tag. Maybe this year I will get lucky on the draw since I put in first choice for archery.Yes I really like super grades and they shoot good and hold their value real well. they are soooh purty though that I guess I will just stick to my trusty old M77 .270 with the beat up stock. I don`t know about you guys but I cannot hunt Coues deer without falling on my butt at least two or three times every season. Sometimes two or three times in a day! I guess those little softball size rocks just keep sneeking up on me. I don`t know maybe I am just getting old. Man now I really want a new super grade. Dang, Red Rabbit, why did you have to bring that up anyway! Good luck on the draw Coues Addict

Azshooter Welcome to the site. I hope you find it as fun and useful as I do. It sounds like you have been tweaking for a while. You should check out the hunt stories and the rifle hunting pictures in the main C.W.T. site . Amanda really does a great job with it. Again welcome and good luck in this years draw.Coues Addict

What units did you all put in for?
coues addict replied to TREESTANDMAN's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Treestandman I put in for deer unit 32 late first choice, unit 32 oct. 2nd choice, For elk archery bull unit 8 first choice, unit 10 archery bull second choice, unit 18b rifle antelope first choice, unit 31 & 32 rifle antelope second choice , unit 31 & 32 bighorn sheep. Coues Addict -
Treestandman I didn`t change to carbon arrows untill last season. I love aluminum arrows, untill you bend one then they, suck, even if you do have an arrow straightener. I really like the carbons because you don`t worry about bending them. A guy can get real caught up in this speed game, so what I did is went to a relatively heavy carbon arrow. About 9 grains per inch. (I got a little better speed , but still retained enough weight for good penetration) I had a robin hood @ 20 yards within the first couple of weeks. I really only shoot now at 30yards and over. I think in the long run you will like the carbons once you get your setup dialed in. I always fletch my own arrows and I like to do a lot of bare shaft testing. The way it works is, basically, if your bow is tuned and setup right your arrows will fly pretty good up to about 35 - 40 yards with no fletching at all. When you get to that point , fletch your arrows and you are gonna be right in there. I don`t know if this helps or not but, these are only my preferances. Good Luck this season Coues Addict

Amanda Man, that buck is awesome, You must have freaked out when You got Your hands on that bad boy, what a buck. Really nice pictures, Thank You for sharing them with us. Congratulations to Bob, incredible Buck! Good Luck in the draw Coues Addict -
Need advice on handguns
coues addict replied to TREESTANDMAN's topic in Handgun Hunting for Coues Deer
Treestandman I am by no means an expert in this area, but I do like to shoot handguns. I am totally ''Old School''. I like revolvers because they are simple and relatively easy to use. I have a .357 magnum, and it is kinda cool because you can also shoot .38 caliber shells as well as .357 mag. Usually you can find a decent used revolver at a gun shop or a gun show. Also .38 caliber ammo is very common and relatively inexpensive so you get a lotta'' bang for your buck.'' I hope this helps, but I think GMM is the '' Man'' when it comes to handguns so you really need to get his input. Good Luck Coues Addict -
Hey Guys I wasn`t sure if you guys were Bull Sh_ _ _ _ g, or what. So I called New Mexico fish and game. The lady I talked to said that there was going to be a deer hunt. I told her that I had heard that on the internet, but that I couldn`t believe that they would want to loose out on that much revenue! She said Ya, that would definitely put a hurt on their program, and as far as she knows the deer seasons were definitely on. She did say to check around July the 6th or so. Hey Mike, I guess You can start worring again! Good luck everyone Coues Addict

300wsm Every year I tell myself I would like to get a new gun. I always wanted a 300 win mag. Then every year I don`t do anything about that situation. I guess '' if it ain`t broke, don`t fix it'' so I will keep using my trusty old .270. That was the first High powered rifle that I bought right after my wife and I got married in 1975. I really like that rifle and it has so many scratches on the stock that I really never worry about it. It shoots very accurate too! Coues Addict

Hey Guys, I am a California resident and we have a different system over here. I actually think it works pretty well. When we harvest an animal, we have to get our tag validated by a fish and game officer, police officer, or fireman. That person then records all the info and one portion of the tag gets sent off to Sacramento, fish and game headquarters. This procedure is required on any harvest, archery or rifle. I don`t think Ca. fish and game is near as good as Az. but maybe they actually did something right on this matter. We actually have a two deer a year bag limit with archery only tags available over the counter at a fish and game office. I just thought you guys might want to know this stuff. Good luck Coues Addict
