coues addict replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
NexTolast Sorry I missed you birthday! I hope you had a great day. If you did great! I hope you have another great day and good luck this year hunting. coues addict. -
Everyone I have never even met most all of you but I do feel we have a common bond and that is just the love of hunting. I have never met David or Kurt and I would bet that I especially could learn from them if I payed attention. I have a brother in law that is one of the most humble people that you could ever know. He harvested a huge nontypical coues deer several years ago and never did enter it in B&C. I asked him why one time and his reply was '' The buck grew those antlers not me''. I never forgot that and it made me realize that hunting is different to each person. I really like Lark`s idea of a book with no hunters named so as to honor the animal and not the hunter. Some of the best hunts that I have been on resulted in average animals being harvested, but, to me the hunts were totally awesome for one reason or another. I will not pass judgement about these guys or others because I don`t feel that is my department. My Father taught me to never judge a book by it`s cover and I believe that 100%. My common sense tells me these guys are no different than anybody else and they just love to hunt just like I do. It seems as though they just got caught up in some real crapola, but who knows and I really don`t care anyway. I do like the books for referance only and it is awesome to look at some of the trophies. I still believe that if the animal gets me excited then that is a trophy to me, to heck with the '' gross score''. I hope all of us have a great season in 2004 and good luck to all of you guys and gals. Coues Addict

Workhorse Welcome to the website. I don`t think access is that bad in unit 32. It is a huge area! One area that I like is off the aravaipa canyon road or aravaipa valley road to the west of Klondike. I found some good bucks up near china peak. You must backpack quite a ways in to escape the crowds though. Another area is off the rattlesnake canyon road to the south of china peak. If you are willing to work your a _ _ off , there are some nice bucks back in the wilderness area off the rattle snake. I hope this helps you and good luck on your hunt. Coues Addict

Treestandman Great story! I once had one come in right behind me in Utah while bowhunting for deer. It scared the holy crap out of me, but when I stood up he hauled butt. It really is a super adrenaline rush!!!!!!! I`m glad he didn`t pounce on you, maybe you will get another crack at him, Good Luck Coues Addict P.S. man you guys were right about that sportsman warehoues. I went there this weekend and I dropped about $500.00. It is really a cool store.

Hey everybody I just wanted to get everyones opinion about a couple of things. I never used a range finder untill last season. I was given one for Xmas year before last. I must tell you that with bullets going over 3000 fps and all I always thought it was cheatin! Well I used mine last year and it was really neat knowing the exact yardage before I shot. I really don`t think it changed the outcome at all , but it was neat knowing anyway. I am now using the thing all the time, many times on coyotes after the shot , just to see how close I guess. Its really kinda cool to use it after your shot just to challenge yourself and to learn to judge the distances. I got a yote the other day a 465yds with my .22-250 and I was stoked. I guessed 450yds and I did hit him low but, it was really cool. I still think wind drift is the toughest to accurately judge, and I do my best , but what do you guys think? Do you guys think I am a cheatin S O B for using a rangefinder or what? I would like to hear your ideas and opinions. Coues Addict

unit 23-take a nice mule and pass on coues?
coues addict replied to Shiras's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
Shiras I don`t know what kind of optics you have but I think after a few days of concentrated glassing you will start to figure things out. Have you ever taken mule deer before? If not , than why limit yourself to only a Coues Deer. A nice mulie is a great trophy. IMHO a kill is not the most important thing. The most important thing to me is to enjoy your time out in the field and learn different things about the game that your hunting. I say if you have a chance at a nice Coues buck then great!!, If all you can find is a Mule deer buck and he gets you excited then why not. Try to talk to some other hunters and see if they are seeing any Coues, talk to the ranchers and try to get some info, but the main thing is be safe and have fun. Good luck on your hunt Coues Addict -
Grant the young hunter Welcome to the site, I hope you enjoy it I do! I don`t think there are many coues deer in unit 42 if any but, I saw one of the biggest desert mule deer I have ever seen one year on my way to unit 20C. It was just northeast of Aguila close to where the 71 and the 93 intersect. I was so shocked to see that caliber of deer in there that I stoped my Vehicle, woke my wife up and turned around. We drove back to where he was and I shined my headlights on him at about 30yards. This thing had 18 or 20 points super mass and was easily 34+ inches wide. My wife never cusses and she said "Oh Sh_ T !!!!!!!!!" . It was around 2.00 a.m. and we sat there and gauked at him. I think Ernesto is right on about the Vulture mountains. That would be my starting point also. You can hunt desert mulies by glassing as long as there are some hills to get a good vantage point from. I would call game and fish and ask to talk to the biologist. If you can`t get any one call the Yuma office and ask for John Hervert, I think he also knows that area, and is very knowledgable. Good Luck! Coues Addict

Grande Bear Albert, here is a load that I have used for over twenty years out of my .270 and it hasn`t failed me yet. Oh ya I have missed a few but that was just shear nerves, not the loads fault. I chronographed this load @ 3150 fps from my gun. It is also very accurate. Winchester brass, CCI large rifle primer, 58grains of IMR 4831, 130 grain Nosler ballistic tip. I seat all my bullets .030 below the lands of my particular rifle. Try it you may like it! works for me! Note: I used to use nosler solid base bullets before they came out with the ballistic tips. Either one works great but now I prefer the ballistic tips because they don`t get dinged up carrying them around in your pockets or in your pack. Good Luck Coues Addict

AZGFD IS ASKING FOR SUGGESTIONS

Diamondbackaz In reguards to your post above that was directed towards me. I think you are completely right, a well thought out letter is going to go over a lot better and I would like to appologize for my smart a_ _ remark, but I just couldn`t resist at the time! I hope there are no hard feelings and I really do agree with you. I am not even an Arizona Resident so I appreciate the fact that I can even voice my opinion. I just love to hunt Coues deer and I hope I can continue without it costing me an arm and a leg. I have never even put in for the kaibab or the strip. I did get an elk tag some ten years ago and I did not kill an Elk. Here in Ca. in my area nonresidents can buy an over the counter deer tag for around $285.00 to hunt desert mule deer. Every year there are a few bucks killed in the 28'' to 30'' spread range. I just don`t see why it should break the bank for a Coues Buck in Arizona. I am sure you guys will work it out and hopefully us hard core hunters won`t have to get two jobs to go hunting. Rich Thompson aka Coues Addict -
AZGFD IS ASKING FOR SUGGESTIONS
coues addict replied to KGAINES's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Ray I couldn`t agree with you more and I was just kidding on the nowhere thing . I just wanted to make the point that all good ideas don`t have to come from extremely intelligent people. I think the Game and fish department will get the idea even if we have some mispelled words. I am not sure that being a little angry is so bad though because most of us are. Maybe if they realize everything ain`t so great in RiverCity it could cause them to actually make some positive changes. I sure hope so anyway! Coues Addict -
AZGFD IS ASKING FOR SUGGESTIONS
coues addict replied to KGAINES's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Diamondbackaz I appreciate what you are saying about letters that we can write and there general format, but I sure hope we are not going to be judged by our writing`s. You don`t have to be a brain surgeon to have good ideas. I think the Idea is to give good positive info that they feel they can use. I do not believe that we are all a bunch of Idiot`s, and I would think you feel the same way too. OBTW the correct spelling for know where is nowhere. Good Luck Coues Addict -
25-06 I think most people here would say that getting up high early on is the most common method used. You do have many advantages when you are high. Like Az. guide says you are fresher and it is somewhat easier to make the climb in the dark when it is nice and cool. I have found that the most important thing that I can do is to not overlook anywhere. I am a glassing fanatic. I have hunted with my family members and many friends and usually I will spend much more time actually behind the bino`s than anybody with me. To me the more time you glass the better chance you have of seeing a good buck. I have spotted deer in some very unusual places, Probably because I don`t try to rule out certain areas that don`t look really good. High, low, they both work! If you oversleep and feel upset that you have missed out don`t sweat it . Set up on the first glassing spot and get to glassing. You may catch a buck that has altered his habits due to hunter pressure or maybe you just figured out that he was low all along. If you keep working up high during mid day you may be in the perfect spot when it gets dark. If you score late, gut him , tag him, and hang him up in a tree with your t shirt . Now you are going down hill with a mag light instead of uphill and thats even better I think. Go back to camp get some rest and pack him out the next day! the main thing is to develop your own style that works for you! Good Luck Coues Addict

AZGFD IS ASKING FOR SUGGESTIONS
coues addict replied to KGAINES's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Az Residents I have just read every post in this particular topic. I must tell everyone that I totally agree with Lark about the one single thing that I believe that Az. could do to change the system is to make everybody pay Up Front. Thats the way it used to be and it worked just fine. It makes you think twice about going somewhere or doing anything if you pay first. I am really concerned that if prices go up to dang much then I personally just won`t be able to afford to hunt in Az. I have always obided by Az. game rules and regulations with no questions asked. I have also helped many resident hunters with forgoten supplies, bedrolls, flat tires, food, etc. I even try to make it a point to ask the ranchers in the area if they need any help with anything. One time I actually did some welding for one old cowboy. I think nonresidents should pay more for tags and permits than residents. I just hope it doesn`t get to the point that only rich guys can afford to hunt. I am a firm believer in not reinventing the wheel. The old system seemed like it was ok and I am sure it had room for improvement, what system doesn`t. The internet has changed everything, lets face it, but is there some law that says you can`t go back to a system that basically worked? I have rambled way to much here so I apoligize for that! I am grateful that everyone has an opinion here, but I think Arizona residents should and will make all the final decisions. Good Luck Rich Thompson aka Coues Addict -
couesnewbie I would try to get the zeiss classic 10 x 40`s from cabela`s for $699.00 and a tripod from Amanda. Then down the road you can get a tripler from zeiss for around $279.00 that screws right on to one eyepiece for an instant spotting scope. Actually the 10 x 40`s will do a real good job just by themselves for several years. Just my 2 cents worth. Good Luck Coues Addict

Younghunter I don`t know if you are going to do any scouting. But I would not overlook the extreme north end of the Barbquivari`s . You can go in through the Joe King Ranch. Also I would scout the Coyote`s. P.S. don`t forget to take a Lion tag. Good luck Coues Addict

couesnewbie Good gun, practuice long shots 300+ yards. Write your bullet drop on a chart and tape it to your stock if you can`t remember them. Good luckCoues Addict P.S. Hey Diamondbackaz, whats up with your new little icon, man that little guys scarry! Can`t you find a cool diamondback or something it reminds me of some kind of alien or something!

Zia I would reccomend either Duane Adams, Josh Epperson, Or Kirk Kelso, they all advertise on CWT home page. I don`t think you can go wrong with any of the above. Good Luck Coues Addict

kingofcoues Catchy name! I don`t know about your financial status but, I would forget the 25 06 and buy good bino`s if you don`t already own them. If you already have good bino`s then its up to you. The 7mm mag is a great coues gun and I have no doubt the 25 06 is also. Sometimes ya just get the urge for a new toy. knowhatimean!!! Ya, new toy, new toy, new toy, good luck Coues Addict

Mattule In my experiences Coues deer don`t really migrate a whole lot like mule deer or elk. Bucks tend to travel more during the rut in search of does but thats about it. I have found that if you are seeing coues deer in a paticular area then stick with that area, year round. expand on that basic area and you will probably locate more coues deer. I have heard it said that most coues whitetail live their lives within a few square miles,I think its probably pretty true. Of course their are always exceptions to every rule, but I think that is a question better answered by Amanda, she`s the expert and I have no doubt that she has factual information to backup whatever she says. Anyway I would keep hunting the area you are hunting and good luck this year.Coues Addict

_JstMe Welcome to CWT site . I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I am a nonresident and I have been hunting Az. for around 25 years now. I don`t feel nonresidents should have the same chance at the draw as residents either. I hope your state gets things worked out and I feel they eventually will. I had no problem with the 10% nr cap. I think most of the members here had to blow off a little steam, and I don`t blame them. Now its time to get guys like Lark and Az. Guide or me and go down to fish and game and see what can be done to fix the problem. The problem I fear is similar to here in Ca. The system is totally driven by money!!!!!!!!!. I would love to see Dianne Fienstein go for a hike in Cuyamacca State Park. Oh ya. but, it will never happen. She was one of the strong supporters of the tree huggers over here. Now we got Lion`s killing hikers and bikers because of the fact that we don`t have lion hunting anymore. I am still Pi_ _ ed. Game management never even gets concidered on these decisions. Well, again welcome to the site and if you like to hunt like the rest of us I don`t care what sex you are you just keep on voicing you opinions and don`t take no crap from anyone. Coues Addict P.S. Amanda`s site is awesome

Treestandman I have pretty much heard the same info that Kevin gave you. My buddy used to work in a gun shop and thought that they were a great value for the money. I personally have never owned one. I hope this helps coues Addict
