    Good Desert Camping

Bowsniper Ernesto pretty much hit the nail on the head! The Kofa does not allow off road travel at all. We mostly hike into the deep canyons and the high vantage points. The desert is super green right now and I think you would have an awesome time, with nice camping weather too! good luck Coues Addict

    Good Desert Camping

Bowsniper I used to hunt Date creek and I would think it is beautiful right now. I also like the kofa game range and I know it has been hammered with rain lately! its a cool place to go because there are quit a few desert bighorn sheep! You can pretty much use your Coues glassing setup to find and locate them. I think the kofa will be around a two and a half or three hour drive but the weather should be really nice! It is awesome low desert country. I hope you have fun wherever you decide! Coues Addict

    Deer camp pranks

Check this out My buddy bowhunts from a treestand up in the mountains near San Diego! He takes a pee bottle up in the tree with him.He said he had drank plenty of coffee that morning before the hike in. Well, he finished his mouning hunt this last season and met up with one of his hunting buddies! It was fairly warm and the other guy did not take enough water! He told him he had plenty and Accidently handed him the wrong bottle,'' Ya Right'' Well, the guy was so thirsty that he chugged that bottle in a huge hurry! He suddenly realized that something just wasn`t right and my buddy just started laughing his a _ _ off. Oh well, what do you do! Moral of the story, pack plenty of your own water!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Coues Addict

    AZ Hunt/Fish Fees

Hey guys I finally got my computer fixed and I just had to chime in on this one! I am a nonresident and I actually thought the nonresident deer tags were very reasonable up to now! I have been hunting Az. for around thirty years. I will probably cough up the extra money somehow for the deer hunt, but on the elk and sheep we will just have to see. I believe the animals themselves are worth every penny and more. I like a mail in your money first system and I hope they go back to that. I just hate to see prices get to high because of the young people Residents or nonresidents that we have got interested in hunting and then cannot afford to go because of absorbent prices! I hope that Az. game and fish doesn`t get totally outrageous or I will not be able to afford to hunt in Az. and that really sucks! I think Az. is probably the best of the western states that I have hunted, which include Ca.,Nev.,Utah,New Mexico,Montana,. I guess I will shut up now. Talk to ya later Coues Addict
  7. Ernesto Wow, great story! I am really glad to hear that you got to go back. sounds like you had a great time! I probably would have dusted that lion! or at least hurled some lead ! Awesome restraint. To bad about the shot opportunity, but look at it this way '' if it was easy we would probably give it up''. That is what makes trophy hunting so challenging. The fact that we never know what the outcome will be!. I am glad you made it back safely and had a great time with your Wife. Maybe we can get together and do some coyote calling sometime.I have been on a bit of a roll lately!Talk to you later Rich Thompson

    Releases

Arizonabowhunter I use a Tru ball tornado and works just great. Trigger pull is adjustable and has camo velcro wrist strap.I also know that the manufactures are Christian`s and that means a lot to me! Good luck Coues Addict

    Genetics

I used to think it was Genetics and habitat also! Then I started pushing '' further in'' than I ever had in one particular unit and I started finding nice deer and sheds! I really agree with Rembrant, that there are trophy quality deer in most all units! I think the main limiting factor is our own weakness! Most hunters do not penetrate really very far from a trailhead or road. I think most guys"Myself included "are basically lazy! Not all but most! I backpack as far in as I can and rarely ever see another hunter! Deer, sense pressure and adjust accordingly. If we start getting further and further from trails and roads , I believe we will start tying into the "toads".The biggest problem a man has is carring water! Its a pain, so we have to either get in better shape or try and learn the intimacies of a particular area. I have been lucky in finding water all over the unit I like to hunt! It helps a lot, because I can pump it and keep on hunting! Four or five miles is quite a ways to us, but to a deer it ain`t sh_ t. I think most units are so big that we really only scratch the surface. I have also started investigating areas that don`t look real good and am finding out that sometimes they can be real sleepers! I didn`t mean to ramble on like this, but my vote goes to the human "wimp factor". I truly believe the deer are there, for the most part, its just up to us to find them! Coues Addict
  12. Keith Happy birthday! Man 35 years old, dude I wish I were 35 again. I feel really old right now! I hope you have a great day. I also hope you get drawn for whatever hunts you put in for this year! Remember ''If you think you can, you can. If you think you can't, your right!'' - Mary K Ash)
  13. Thanks everyone I really appreciate all the birthday greetings. Azpackhorse, I got drawn for the four day hunt last October and I hunted really hard. I spotted several bucks and a good buddy of mine that has never hunted coues deer got a couple of opportunities but could not connect! I ended up shooting a decent forked horn on the last day! We boned the buck out and we got back to camp around 10:30 P.M. It was a really fun hunt, but could not find the "Big One". Amanda, I have had major computer problems, but I think I have most of them straightened out. I have been really busy lately and my Dad, who lives with my wife I broke his leg about two weeks ago while feeding the horses! It has been really hectic around here. Again, thanks all for the good wishes. Rich Thompson Coues Addict

    Silly Question

Rembrant That was the best explanation I have ever heard. Spoken like a true " Arteest". I should have said 127and 4/8'' and I could have won an awesome print ! Dang. Oh well maybe next time! Oh ya and scoozer they are also called Carp because they are not as tasty, like the lowly carp. later Coues Addict

    Montana bear test

Hey I passed I got a 93% also and I didn`t read the training manual either! I think I will email Elkhunter and Grizzly and maybe we can get together sometime in the early fall! I`m kinda proud of myself for a Coues Addict. I can spot em from a long way away and we can stalk them and then I will stay there while elkhunter and Grizzly go get em! I don`t like being real close to those suckers. That is of course unless they will let me shoot from 3 to 4 hundred yards! Kind of fun taking the test though! Rich Thompson
  16. Ernesto Sorry to hear about your gun problems. I know a good gunsmith here in El Centro that could probably fix it the same day! Call me if you want to bring it over, Maybe you can still go back and get that big Buck. I am thankful that there was no other harm done! Sounds kinda scarry. Were you happy with the overall experience, Housing, the ranch, crossing the border, etc.? Talk to You later! Coues Addict

    Rude hunters

I don`t own a quad either! I really don`t care if other guys do or not as long as they are not disrespectful to me or my hunting partners. I am a lot like Azpackhorse! I do everything the hard way! I use a wall tent! A big heavy one, and establish a base camp. I then backpack into my hunting area for however many days I can stand the crappy food. I guess I like the thought of doing everything the "Hard Way " and really working at becoming a better outdoorsman and hunter. I love planning the trip and scouting when I can to ensure that I am not going to be hunting a nominal area. I can bone out a deer size critter in usually about an hour to hour and a half and it is rewarding to me to haul out the meat. I guess I am looking for an overall experience when I go hunting, not production! heck, half of the challenge is trying to over come whatever I have managed to forget! I do think the old expression ''To each his own" applies here and respect the fact that we all hunt for different reasons or we hunt different methods out of different circumstances. I usually don`t see many hunters at all so maybe I am avoiding many of the problems that others are having. I would probably be upset if someone was pointing a rifle at me while looking through their scope. I am not sure what I would do! Probably ''DUCK". Sorry about the long post . later Coues Addict
  18. Amanda I really enjoy the CWT site a lot , especially the discussion forum! I congratulate you on an excellent job and ''Happy Birthday" . Long Range Shooting

Brian Well, my computer has been messed up for a couple of months now and I just had to throw my two cents worth in! I have read all the posts about this subject and I believe for the most part you have recieved pretty good information. With the exception of the "Bad shot " comment, Oh man thats really cold. I use a little different practice technique. I go out to the desert and find an embankment that I can stand a 4 X 8 sheet of plywood up on I spraypaint a 3" dot a couple of feet from the top then I get back and rangefind 400 yards, 500 yards, etc.and I shoot three shot groups. You will probably be really surprised at the results you might get, as far as bullet drop and grouping! You can`t really tell jack about your gun from charts and ballistic tables! You have to shoot the loads and gun you will be using on your hunt . Trust me I have missed quite a few deer, and lots of coyotes. It feels like crap when you miss a nice animal, because you know you just blew a golden opportunity, but, thats what makes hunting fun is the fact that there are no '' guarantees". If you try the plyboard thing you will probably be really amazed at the results. You will probably want to start reloading and keep working on it, and it can be a huge confidence booster! Or you may just figure out you and your guns limitations! Oh ya and Brian, I have only been drawn once for Elk in twenty some odd years and I missed my bull also. Good luck Coues Addict

    No Identity...Why?

Hey Josh Man, you better start saving for a small VCR/ TV combo, so that when the ''better half " is watching Lifetime, you can sneak in the other room and watch ''Huntin Tapes", ya!!!!!!!!. I think they are pretty cheap now at Wallyworld. Did you get drawn for any coues hunts this year? If so good luck! Coues Addict aka Rich Thompson

    hunting from your back

Hey Ken Welcome to the site! I think this is one of the best sites on the internet. I am also a nonresident and have hunted Az. for over twenty five years. I love unit 32. It is an extremely large unit and there are plenty of whitetail in the unit. I will be backpacking in to an area I hunted last year for the early Oct. hunt. I am really getting excited about the time off. Ken, there are several wilderness ares in the unit and I think they all hold good populations of Coues. The main thing is to get out far enough that you get into undisturbed country. Prepare for any kind of weather because you never know! That being said. I killed a buck last year in Dec. and all I had on for a shirt was an old T shirt. The rut uasually kicks in '' big time'' in the early part of January.Good luck on your hunt, and have lots of fun! Hey Amanda!!

Happy birthday Amanda Man, I think I am just a tad late! I sincerely hope you had a great birthday! I always thought you were only as old as you feel. The problem I am having is I feel really old! I hope you had a nice vacation too Amanda Rich Thompson
  23. Hey guys Now that CHD and Lark are done with that record book withdrawal thing I was thinkin. Why couldn`t we start our own record book! I mean why the heck not! We could have all the awesome pictures that we all send in and no hunters names! But we could name the deer! Like four mile from the road buck, or That huge canyon way the he_ _ over there buck, or My shot from the side of the road but legal buck, or maybe my little meat buck,or I sawed two points off his rack buck!. Entry would be free yes free and those Boone and Crockett guys just kiss our A_ _ ess. I think it would be really cool. Anyone game!!!!!!!!!!
  24. Interesting topic My neise shot and wounded a buck last year and when me, my neise and my brother in law finally got up to the buck it jumped up and headed right for Mike! He promptly pulled out his knife jumped on the bucks back, grabbed his antlers, and slit his throat! It was a heck of a funny sight watching that thing tryiing to get his rack into him! My brother in law used to ride bulls in his younger days and I guess it just seemed like the thing to do at the time. Once the deer expired and after we all stopped laughing we thought that was really kinda awesome! To bad we didn`t have a video camera, it was quite a sight! Coues Addict

    Almost that time again

Well, I pulled a real stupid thing off about two weeks ago! I was tryin to get my old jeep runin and I had my son cranking it over! it wouldn`t keep runin so I figured it was probably the fuel pump. Well I think me and Lark must of grew up around the same kinda Dads because I got out the old gas can and promptly filled up a folgers coffee can with gas and proceeded to spill a little bit into the throat of the old carbolator! Well it worked real good for a while then the dang thing backfired and blew gas all over my right hand, arm, even my pants. Heck, I was a human fire ball for a while. It took me a while to get all them flames extinguished! then the darn air cleaner ignited and my jeep was on fire too! Well when we got all the fires out, I had managed to burn the crap out of my right hand! I missed the opener of our Ca. Archery deer season and I found out wiping my butt with my left hand just doesn`t work as good, at least for me anyway! Well now everthing is healing up niceley and I got an Oct tag in unit 32. I am really looking forward to it. I am going archery hunting this weekend though and we`ll just see what happens! The way I figure it is "Ya never know what might happen when you get your butt out after em'' I hope you guys are as '' fired up" as I am this year. Talk to ya later Coues Addict
