AFB Hey AFB , I am really glad to know we have some good ole Arizona boys over there. I don`t envy the job you are doing and I just wanted you to know I really appreciate it. If you get down or just want to talk send me an email anytime. Thanks again and keep up the good work. Coues addict -
Ernesto I like to leave camp one to two hours before sunrise and get as high as I possibly can well before the sun comes up. I stay out usually on the ridge tops all day, I glass usually for 1 to 2 hours in one place if I think it looks good or if I`m seeing lots of deer. The main problem I have, Is not having time to come to Arizona for pre scouting and placing water out. I used to backpack a lot and I love not going back to camp for several days, but usually water is a problem or can be if I don`t know the area real well. Now I use a sweetwater water pump and I refill my water bottles whenever I find water. I take lots of snacks, jerkey, trailmix, apples, M.R.E`s. I usually won`t get back to my camp or my vehicle untill way after dark. I think Scott Adams is on the right track with his goats. That looks like as good of setup as you can get for Coues Deer. Hey GMM You Know, You could go to New Mexico on an over the counter tag. Thats what I am going to do this year even if I get drawn for an Arizona hunt. I have always wanted to try New Mexico. You can take a mule deer or a coues deer so there should be plenty of shot opportunities. If you don`t get get drawn there is always Ca. over the counter tags. I hunt an area that has desert mule deer every year and I know a couple of guys that use handguns sometimes they score and some years they don`t. You`ll go crazy if you don`t take that cannon out and really put it to good use. My brother in law is thinking about coming over here to Ca. for the same reason, He can`t seem to draw a deer tag either. Well it`s something to think about anyway. I truly hope you get a tag this Year, Good Luck. Coues Addict

Hey GMM Does that cannon of yours have a scope on it or is that even legal in AZ. I have killed Javelina and deer with my bow but have never tried pistols. I am getting older and I guess I just prefer Rifle hunting because I am getting lazy. Oh , I didn`t say that did I ? I also can`t see up close like I used to. If I was gonna try pistol hunting I would probably want a scope, or lighted glow sights like my bow has. Good Luck in this years draw. Coues Addict

Thanks, Coues Addict P.S. Oh and how about some picks of your Bucks?

Mr. Hubbard Thats a good one, it made me laugh, but, I forgot to mention in this senario that you are at least three miles from the nearest road in a wilderness area. Now whatcha gonna do? Coues Addict

Galiuro Mountain Man I have never shot any big game with my pistol, but If I was going to try I would take my S&W 357 Magnum. It is the only large caliber hand gun that I own, and I can shoot it reasonably well. I sure hate the sound of that thing though! Whew! Coues Addict

CHD I have no doubt about your passion for Coues deer hunting. I personally have killed to many coyotes to count. I also feel they are hardest on fawns.I do think however you may want to Rethink the way that you say you take delight in a slow agonizing death of the coyote. That is just the kind of talk the anti`s will use to convince the rest of the country that we are all a bunch of heartless people that don`t care about God`s creations. I am sure you probably mean well, I just don`t think we need to advertise all the details to our kills. I really believe all predators have a right to exsist, Its just up to us to control their numbers if we are gonna have deer and other game animals to hunt. In an earlier post I mentioned the fact that we can`t even hunt them anymore in California. I voted to keep hunting lions some fifteen years ago here in Ca. but the general public didn`t see it that way. Now that we have lost lion hunting people are getting killed in places like Cuyamacca State Park in San Diego County. I appologize if I have hurt anyone`s feelings but maybe you just DON`T KNOW WHAT YOUR MISSING UNTILL IT`S GONE. I truly Love hunting in Arizona and am thankful for every hunt I get to go on in Your great state, but I think its up to us to kill any animal we hunt in the most humane way possible, and all of the above is just my own personal opinion. Treestandman Back in 1978 or 1979 I was Bowhunting mule deer in Utah. I was working the edges of some large aspen groves. I had spotted some does and was squatting down just watching them in my bino`s. I heard something coming toward me directly behind me. I was so new at bowhunting that I totally Froze, so that I would not spook whatever it was. I was thinking Deer, because it sounded like a large animal. Well, I knocked an arrow and turned my head extremely slow. I saw brown fur, but, I still couldn`t make out what it was. It was only 10 feet or so behind me. I decided to turn and Draw back kinda all in one motion. Well a huge Tom lion was right there a little above me on some rocks. I was so stunned that I just watched as he ran off. I never even thought about killing him it was just awesome seeing him. All my budies said I should have shot at him, but I was just fine with the whole thing just like it happened. Now I will tell you what`s really sad. I live in California, So check this out, I can buy an Arizona lion Tag, legally harvest a lion, Have it mounted in Arizona, but, I cannot legally bring it into California. So my point is, You guys should be thankful you can still hunt them, but I don`t believe a hunter should ever be pressured into killing anything! It`s just way to personal, I commend elkmaniac for his apology to Josh. Please do what you can to keep fighting the anti`s because once they get lion hunting they will start with another species, Trust me. Coues Addict

Hey Galiuro Mountain Man Thanks a lot for the feedback on pack camera`s, I really appreciate it. I just went to the Jesse`s site you posted a while back on trail camera`s. Man, this stuff is to cool! Gonna have to build one or two and try them out. I live in a desert area so I`ll have to try them on Mulie`s or coyotes. It`s pretty neat the way you guys are getting valuable info. Coyote`s killed our dog last December, So I have been busy gettin a little" Payback", I have called in and killed 8 Yotes and 1 Bobcat since they got our dog. The Freezer in My garage is gettin kinda full of Hides, so I guess I will start doing something a little more constructive. I`ll keep You posted. Thanks again. Coues Addict

Arizona Guide I really enjoyed this shed hunting story also. Thanks for reminding everyone of the importance of passing up young bucks. It seems as though many of my friends in my local area are really hung up on filling there tags. I have bought many tags, resident, and nonresident tags for Arizona that have gone unfilled, because I passed up small Bucks. Sometimes the drive home was long and I would think (I should have shot that forked horn or little Three point ), but then I realized that I did the right thing by letting him go. I really appreciate what you are saying. Thanks Coues Addict

Hey Everyone I hope all you guys and gals had a great 2003 season. Well I broke my old Minolta 35mm camera on my last hunt and had to borrow a camera. I would really like to get some feedback on camera`s. I know a guy that told me to get a Cannon elf digital, because he said there good ,small and lightweight. I can`t afford to spend a fortune on a camera and I`m used to the 35mm. I understand the digital`s are awesome. I don`t know which way to go? I have packed a camera for the last 20 years so I`m not to hung up about weight. Maybe you guys can give me some feedback? Please I need feedback!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : Thanks Coues addict

What unit to apply for?
coues addict replied to couesbitten's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Couesbitten I once drew a tag for 36c and found myself , my son, and a friend within rifle range of what looked like a good size drug smuggling operation right before dark. It was a little tense for a couple of minutes. I really tried not to let it bother me, but it kinda hung around in the back of my mind for a few days. Not the kind of stuff I want to think about when I`m hunting, if you know what I mean. As far as hunting high or low. I have found that most of the areas that I go, I cannot get to high!!! Usually the higher you get the less hunter pressure there is. The canyons I was refering to are the high montain, huge, butt kicking, take all day to glass canyons. Thats my biggest problem, is figuring out how to penetrate some of these areas without killing myself. I used to backpack quite a bit and it`s hard to carry enough water in the early season, especially if you don`t know the area real well. Thats why I was saying to stick with 1 or 2 units and try to learn them well. The more you hunt a paticular area ,the more water holes and springs you`ll find, and the more deer you will see. Big Coues bucks like remote areas, basically where you don`t find people, get as far back from roads and other hunters as physically possible. Find good feeding areas,South and East Slopes, water sources, usually on North and Northwest slopes and canyon Bottoms and you will find good bucks.Try taking your bedroll in and spending the night , Take a water pumping device so you can refill your water bottles as you find water souces. These are just a few ideas and I hope they help. Good Luck Coues Addict -
What unit to apply for?
coues addict replied to couesbitten's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Couesbitten I have hunted 36c and can tell you from personal experience that it definitely has trophy buck`s. I know a guy from San Diego that killed a 128''in 36c a few years back. The key at least for me, though, is to stick with 1 or 2 areas and really learn them the very best that I can, I mean really push back into some of those remote canyons and ridges that really look good. I think there are trophy quality bucks in every unit. I could be wrong, but, we just have to be persistant and find them.I personally like unit 32 because it doesn`t seem to have as many problems with the illegals. All the units that you mentioned will probably be good choices.Good luck in the draw this year Coues Addict -
Welcome Alan I am a new member also Alan but I feel like a really old guy. I live in Imperial Ca. and have hunted coues for quite a while. The mountains just seem to kick my butt a little more each year, but, that`s life. I really learn a lot from some of these young guys. I really enjoy watching this site, Amanda has done a great job with it. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Coues Addict

Arizona Guide I have been looking for a good 3d target to practice with and I noticed that Cabela`s has a Delta that they call the river bottom buck. I know it`s an Eastern but it looks like it is pretty small. I think it could be repainted a little and it might just do the trick. I want the smallest whitetail 3d target I can get anyway, so I`ll probably order one , plus I think they only cost around $65.00. You might want to check it out , It`s the catalogue thats stashed under all your Wife`s stuff so it makes it reallly hard to find. hahaha. Goodluck Coues Addict

CHD I have read a few Jack O`Conner books myself and I realize he liked jump shooting deer. Myself, when I first started deer hunting I seemed to jump them wether I wanted to or not , partially because I didn`t know what I was doing and partially because of plain dumb luck. Then a friend of mine showed me his Zeiss Bino`s . WOW ,the stuff that I could see. Well I got my first pair of Zeiss in 1978. I still love them . Then came tripods. OK , here`s the deal for me anyway. If you knew me You would probably think I am a little wacko, but this is the way that I glass, I use a grid pattern just like everyone else ,except as I glass I am constantly trying to read the terrain to see If I can get over there without totally killing myself. I love to explore new areas even if it takes me all day to get over to a new spot. I really don`t care how long it takes me to look over a good looking area. In this process I usually see calm , natural acting animals, Hey Coues are a small enough target to hit standing still, I am not a bad shot ,but ,I ain`t Jack O`Conner. I like the fact that ,If I spot a good Buck, He doesn`t know that I am there, = stalk and good shot. It takes time to convince yourself that sitting in one place for 1,2, hours or whatever is a smart thing to do . I think as we spot more game , our confidence in glassing grows. I think you`ll jump em without even trying while you try to get to that next ridge or canyon. If you feel the need to practice on running game ,try, coyote calling ,I love it ,and you get the adrenaline rush too. Good luck Coues Addict

Amanda I really enjoyed your story and those awesome photo`s . I like the picture of you and your buck best. I would probably take that buck too, especially if I popped the dinero for the San Carlos tag. Really pretty deer . Thanks for writing your story. Coues Addict

Ernesto C. I really appreciate what you were saying to coues slaya jr. about practice, practice, practice. I have been telling my own son that very same thing for quite a few years now. It always helps a dad to here it from someone else. Thanks Coues Addict Oh and welcome coues slaya jr. to the coolest website.

To All Concerned, I am a California resident and have been hunting in Arizona for over 25 years . I am a" do it Yourself " hunter . I have nothing against guides . I have two good friends that are guides in Arizona. I , really just can't afford guides for the most part. I don't think that nonresidents should get 50% or whatever of the tags , It`s just not fair to the Arizona residents. I fully realize it is very hard to draw certain tags ,but, thats part of what makes them so special when you do get one. I hope that everyone stands behind Az Game and Fish and we get this thing behind us. I really love hunting in Arizona and I can accept the fact that I might not always get the very best tags , but , thats life, Hang in there all you Arizona residents and keep fighting for your rights. Hey Chris, I know exactly what you mean about dissappearing deer, but, I have hunted all of the Arizona hunts Oct., Nov., and Dec., I personally like the Oct. hunt better than the Nov. hunt for two reasons, 1st, I believe the deer are a lot less pressured and don`t quite know it`s that time again. 2nd I am getting close to the big 50 mark and for me hunting for 4 days all out is about all I can take. I usually try to get back as far from a road as I can and have not had any great difficulty in spotting deer. It is tuff though to seriously trophy hunt with only 4 days, sometimes you end up shooting a buck that you would have passed up if it were the Dec. hunt. Oh and I almost forgot , If You put in for an Oct. hunt as a 2nd choice , You are probably going to get drawn,Hey, thats three reasons ,sorry, Hope this helps. Coues Addict
