    Two 338 Win Mag Rifles

I have two 338 WM rifles for sale. Both are in very good shape with minimal handling marks. First up is a Winchester SuperGrade controlled round feed (claw extractor), wood stock, built in mid 90's IIRC by the custom shop. New Haven rollmark of course. Has a Leupold 3x9 VX-II. It's a real classic with beautiful wood, ebony tip on forend, nice checkering, blued grip cap, red recoil pad, etc. Since I took these pics we did take the gun on a hunt. It has a couple little marks from the hunt but hardly noticeable. I will get pics of any defects tomorrow when I have decent light. The scope is dated but 100% functional with a duplex reticle. They don't make them like this anymore. $1350. Second is a Mountain Eagle. These guns were made by Magnum Research for a few years. Sako action, HS Precision stock, Krieger barrel. I never really got around to sorting this gun out and figuring out what rounds it liked. Gun does not come with the pictured Leupold scope or sling. Does come with rings and mounts though. Note small scratch on floorplate. $950.
  2. UPDATE: AS OF CHRISTMAS EVE 12/24 ALL AMMO IS SOLD OR SPF Finally getting around to putting this ammo up. Hopefully the 338WM can help someone with their elk hunt. I have it priced at what I think is about right in this market. All ammo has been stored in air conditioned rooms. Don't have to sell any of this. Crazy lowball will be ignored. I am near the Scottsdale Airport (Thunderbird and Scottsdale). Will drive up to 10 min to meet. Can you specify chambering more clearly? Lots of 7's out there. 7-08, 7 rem mag, 7 WSM, etc.
  5. also check Gander RV in avondale and mesa Edit: Outdoor RV in Mesa has Fed blue box #8's for $7-something a box. They also have Win AA's for $9-something a box. Neither available at avondale.
  6. And I bet when you traded/sold those guns you likely made a few bucks. My boys have shot a lot of ducks with 20 ga steel loads (which are hard to find) and surprise! - #2 steel killed them just fine.
  7. Appreciate the complement OutdoorWriter. Also I'd add for the OP, if you buy a quality used gun yes you will tie up a few more bucks but you'll have no problem getting your money back out of it if it doesn't work out for you.
  8. Quail hunting has been a big passion in my life. Bottom line for me - 20 ga gets it done just great and all a 12 enables is missing with more authority. The pellets are going the same speed out of either gauge, just more launched with the 12. (Yotebuster is right about longer columns, but I don't shoot much beyond regular old 7/8 or 3/4 oz loads). If I need a 12 for ducks or pheasants that's what I use. My preferred setups are a 28" barreled O/U or 28" SxS. I'm a pretty big guy though so the 28 helps smooth me out. Longer barrels are in vogue these days so if you find a good 26" and it works for you save a few bucks and go for it. There's no effect on the shot pattern. I hunted years with O/U and was very effective with it. Now I use a SxS and am more effective in the field with it. Busting clays is still better for me with O/U. When you pick up a shotgun, fit is everything. And I have certain guns that feel "alive" in my hands while others feel clunky. Most used O/U field gun for me is a Sig/Rizzini TR30 (made by B. Rizzini, same design as the C. Guerini's you see). Had a Beretta 686 Onyx that was a great gun. Sold it to a buddy when I upgraded to the Rizzini. He still hunts with it. Have an (old style) Citori featherweight that also has "the feel", and lucked into a decent deal on a Superposed 20 ga 2 barrel set a few years back. I haven't held a turkish made O/U yet that had that refined balance. Pretty clunky other than the Kimber Valier from years ago. But that was a higher dollar gun. OP, I'd recommend that you try a few out if you can. As mentioned elsewhere pushing up closer to $1500 or so really puts you into a higher grade of gun, especially in a well cared for used gun. Very hard to wear out a well made O/U.

    143 eldx

Have witnessed/shot 3 animals with the Hornady factory 6.5 CM 143 ELDX round out of a Tikka T3. 12AW Kaibab mule buck 325 yards one shot behind shoulder quartering away. Two bounds/piled up dead. Did not exit. 12AW Kaibab mule buck 125 yards deer walking away/uphill first shot to right of spine just at rear of ribcage (angle would have exited the brisket) he went down, few seconds later struggling to get up had turned sideways and put one behind the shoulder - dead right now. Neither exited. 4A Elk Cow (youth) first shot slight quartering away hit high at about 110 yds., walked 20 yards staggering, second shot correctly placed went down like a ton of bricks. Neither exited. One bullet recovered from the second Kaibab buck looked like the OP's photo. Just the cup with a little lead in it. Internal damage was extensive. I like to say these bullets "grenade" inside. Found chips of jacket in backstrap of the second one (the one next to the spine). (Also with 7mm ELDX have shot a 4A antlerless bull calf 200 yds that dropped in its tracks/did not exit, and a Unit 27 Bull Elk at 600 yd dropped him but head came up so my son put another in him. Second shot went through near shoulder and broke the far shoulder. Again nothing exited). My biggest worry with these bullets is blood trail if you don't put him down. But none of the ones we've shot were going anywhere.

.80 a round is for top drawer self defense ammo, not plinking ammo. Plinking ammo is about half that price. S&B case went for $425. SD stuff was about .50 a round before the current tight market.

Adult onset hunter, first Elk tag

Late elk are going to be in bachelor groups eating and sleeping. They need to rest up and regain weight after fighting and chasing girls and forgetting to eat during the prior month. A little pressure will push them back into rougher country. You can find them bedded mid day. Glass hard look for the suede colored rumps/lumps. As noted by Hoss50 scout pretty close to the hunt as their pattern changes after the rut.

Which Zeiss reticle would you choose?

I generally dial for elevation and hold for wind. Have a ballistic chart with come-up's and wind corrections taped to my stock. In 308 you could zero at 200 and pretty much be kill zone OK out to 250, maybe 275 yds. Beyond that you'd dial in whatever elevation minutes or mils you need. Wind is where the magic is. Its hard to read, it's hard to quantify, it may vary between you and the target, and it makes a difference. Under 500 yds not terrible but still the biggest variable to try to manage. So any of those reticles would work for me as they have a horizontal scale, and I'd just want to have the right units (mils on the dial, mils on the reticle scale or same matching situation with MOA). There are some scopes floating out there with mils in the reticle and MOA on the dials that make zero sense to me. Finally, you likely know this, but 2nd focal plane reticles are only correct at full magnification.

    Recommend me a Meat Slicer

Wife wants a meat slicer. With a bunch of teen/young adult boys in the house we go through the meat. Processed/ate 3 deer last year, have 3 elk tags this year. Also it won't be slicing lunchmeat all the time - maybe thicker strips for jerkey, slicing a cooked elk roast, whatever. And we will likely do cheese. In a pinch we will be slicing ham or bacon or turkey breast or whatever. We are buy once cry once people. Don't need the super gucci giant rig from the deli, but do want something quality that will last and is reasonably easy to deploy, and clean up when done. Don't want to spend a fortune but it seems to me that for $4-800 there ought to be a superb unit available for our use. One that will do its job without causing frustration. Have been looking at restaurant supplies online - lots of brands I don't recognize. Would appreciate your experienced recommendations or maybe pointing us to reference material that will help our selection.

    Recommend me a Meat Slicer

thanks. Curious how old your Cabelas slicer is. Looking at the reviews there are a lot of complaints about the blade not being parallel to the sliding surface, so the thickness isn't consistent, hitchy or cheap plastic slide construction, etc. My guess is things are different since the Bass Pro acquisition.
