Frustrated newbie seeking advice
jknister replied to Calebwalter's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
What brand are the binos? -
Does that stud in the front come off so I could put my own tripod adapter on?
-
I have a really nice pair of Binos for sale. Vortex Kaibab 20x56 HD. Comes with all lens covers, strap, and soft Vortex storage case (not pictured). You will need a tripod and tripod adapter to use these as they are powerful. It does take some practice to get good with these but Ive spotted antlers from a long long way out. Theres a pair on ebay for $1200, Phoenix Craigslist for $1000. I want $900 for these.

I know of some places in 19A around Cottonwood. They're in front of my house alot but cant shoot here!
-
Interested in that spotting scope. Ever make it up to the Cottonwood area?
-
If you can, put out a couple trail cams. That will at least let you know what is in the area. Personally I avoid placing them on tanks as Im afraid of them being taken. I agree with 452b264 about having good binoculars. You said you had 10x50s but didnt mention the brand. For years I used Walmart binos and thought they were good enough. When I bought some Vortex it was like a whole new world. I saw so so many more deer.

My daughter and I think we saw one in the southeast section of 6A (not far from 5BS) a few years back. We had been calling back and forth with a turkey when it suddenly shut up. We stalked up to where it was and thats when we saw the mystery animal. It was gone in a flash. Bigger than a coyote, definitely not a deer, elk, turkey, etc. Maybe could have been a bear but I dont think so. Only thing left was it was a wolf. But who knows, it was definitely something dark, big, and fast.

This 380 is a perfect conceal carry light pistol. Its small, light, and I believe the magazine holds 6 rounds. This gun was originally used by a pistol accessory company to retrofit parts so it was painted blue by them and then later painted black. Its not the prettiest but functions perfect. Does not have the laser. Located in Cottonwood. $150

If you plan on putting in for 19a, dont.

When I deer hunt I glass with Vortex Crossfire 10x42 Binos. Once I find something I break out my Vortex Kaibab 20x56s. I can see antlers over a mile and a half away with those.

I have 2 -15 round Smith and Wesson magazines for sale. They are for the M&P full size and will work for the 40 and 357 apparently. Located in Cottonwoood. $30 for both in person. $35 if you want them mailed.

In 19A where I hunt mule deer I never sit in the same spot for more than 20 or 30 minutes max. And when I move I only go 100 or 200 yards away. By doing that I can still see most of the area I was previously glassing plus some new unglassed area. This may sound weird but Every single deer my 17yo daughter has shot (5), and I have shot (2) has been spotted within 1 minute or less of sitting down. I know there is value and sitting and waiting but every time I sit for 2 or 3 hours in one spot, nothing has shown up.

Check out this video about the pillow topper. Its well worth your time:
-
Mine didnt have one. Maybe that was the problem
-
Ya dont tell me that.
-
I had a 300 winmag and it kicked so hard I sold it. Get something different.
-
I'll be heading into 6A tonight, sleeping in the truck and hunt the morning and head home. They were gobbling last Saturday so hopefully they still will be.
-
Thats pretty crazy. In twenty years running around in the wilderness Ive only seen one bear, at 1000 yards give or take.
-
What part of 6A are you in?
-
Where I am in 6A there is lots of gobbling but I heard in 5B there wasnt any. Ive seen turkey almost every morning.
-
This is why you keep your mouth shut. Usually its the government coming after their "fair" share.
-
Ive heard of people doing this and they do a 50/50 split of anything found.
-
If you found the birds in a certain spot a few weeks back they should be in the same general area. I hunted 5b one time and not one gobble the weekend I was there. Sometimes they just dont talk. Hard to say. For my daughters youth hunt in 6A this year there was tons of gobbling, but they were henned up.

Thats a good size area. I wasnt too far from Maxwell park. Going back Friday.
