My 12 yr old son wants to get into archery, and I want to get him a bow for Christmas. He is right handed and left eye dominant. He shoots a rifle right handed, but I don't know if a bow would be the same. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this? I was thinking about just taking him to get fit for one and he can decide what more comfortable, or should we just get him one and he can train himself either way? Thanks Brittani

Thank you all for the replies. I will take him to a shop and see what works best for him. Happy Thanksgiving!

Sounds like this is more common that I thought.

I am so proud of my boys, even my 6 year old. They really put in the work to have an amazing hunt. Their tag was in 5bs/6A we signed up for the youth camp that the Elk Society was putting on there. They really do a great job with all of the youth camps. They teach the kids so much and everyone there is always so happy for the kids and willing to help. We also stayed in one of the bunk houses that they have there and the kids thought that was really cool. We got into them right away my oldest got his down around 10am and my middle son got his around 5:30pm. We hiked altogether about 12 miles. It was a long day but well worth it. They were really rutting hard, a few times we were on a herd the bulls were surrounding the cows so I was nervous for them to shoot, but it all worked out. It was really fun experience it as a family. We live in queen creek and luckily Miller's Southwestern Processing was there. They are nice and very efficient. (It wouldn't let me upload all of the family pictures for some reason)

It was not easy with a 6 year old that gets bored after 2 mins, but even with him not being that quiet we were on them all day. Even when we hung back a little a couple times a bull and a couple cow came into us at about 20 yards (my hunter were not with us of course) and they were not bothered by us in the least. He thought that was so cool.

Thought you guys would appreciate this picture that I found of my grandpa. It was taken 60+ years ago. I am the same age now that he was in this picture. He passed when I was 13, but wish my boys and I could have hunted with him.

I was lucky enough to draw my first bull tag and it's an early archery tag in 6B. I am so excited! I bought my bow about 2 years ago and fell for archery pretty quick π. My family and I are headed there this weekend to shed hunt and scout. My dad hunts muzzleloader deer in 6B most years so he knows the northern part of the unit pretty well but does not have experience with the elk rut. My question is what kinds of things do you look for when you are scouting for early archery? I want to do whatever I can to have a great hunt and hopefully a successful one. Thank you!!

Thanks for the info. Didn't think it would be closed still.

That's the plan to deer hunt the week(s) before. At least least year that's when 6B was open for archery deer...who knows this year. Thank you for the help. π
