Help name my new hunting buddy!
Basser15 replied to Coues Sniper's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Of the names mentioned so far I think he looks like a Boone. Plus it's easy to yell, "Boone get you #$%^&$ !@# over here!" when you come home and he's chewed everything up -
Would most of those pics be considered "scouting"? They are there every year! Nice pics....I'll probably be up there after the 4th to check our cams Jay put up this weekend and to start my scouting. I'll let you know for sure if you want to meet up.

Pros: Good for the dog, they can find stuff for you, always nice to have your dog out with you. Cons: Sometimes have to find your dog....or at least mine as he has a tendency to want to just keep exploring. If you have a shock collar just make sure his "hearing aid" is fully charged

It's 76 days. I just don't think you're truly into it this year....if I don't see more dedication out of you I might just have to donate your tag!

Wish it wasn't over the 4th weekend. Gonna miss it this year.

2nd annual Flagstaff area CWT get together!
Basser15 replied to Lance's topic in CouesWhitetail.com Get-togethers!
Had a great time seeing some familiar faces and meeting some new ones. Always a great time getting out of the heat too! It's always easy guessing the scores when you see the score sheet first But actually I think Doug won the big rack and Ty came closest on the smaller of the two. -
Plan on shooting the Wac 'em 3 blade broadhead this season but would like any input you guys might have on comparing them to the 4 blade, or the G5 Striker that i've been seeing around a lot lately. Any one have experience with all three of them? How do they fly in comparison to field tips? The only thing that has me concerned with the Wac 'ems are the smaller cutting radius. Any input would be appreciated.

just out of curiosity, it mentions that it's a great place to fly fish. Is Marshall a fly only lake like JD Dam or are they just suggesting that it would be a good place to learn?
-
Thanks for the replies guys. Is there a difference in the 3 blade and 4 blade Wac'ems as far as shooting? Was thinking that with the smaller cutting diameter that an extra blade might be beneficial but think a straighter shooter would help more.

Had a change in my plans so it looks like I should be able to make it now. Just don't mind the guy sitting by the campfire studying.....haha

Cool pics. Seems a lot of bears seem to be showing on on pics lately. -
Man that looks like a lot of fun! Thanks for the pics. If you guys need a volunteer in July let me know because I'd like to tag along, I have that month off from school so I'm free.

Awesome photo Lance! Are you guys still finding those antlers on the ground? Not as scenic as yours, but here is a pic of my brother and I with his first big game animal last year. -
Think they like the attention

Congrats on the nice gobbler!

That is sweet! Great hunt guys.

My dog Kade comes out of South Mounain Labs, which is more of a family with a hunting dog that they bred. But the sire has plenty of puppies hitting the ground all the time. If you're interested just let me know and I can get in contact with the owners and they can let you know about upcoming litters. Very loving dog and for as little overall time I've put into his bird training I think he's pretty good(he does have his AKC junior title). Little high strung sometimes but I think that adds to the drive....and he just turned 3.

What a morning in the turkey woods! After very little noise on behalf of the birds and a couple blown opportunities on my part opening weekend I was able to make it back out this morning to give them another try. And after exchanging some emails with Lance and doing the traditional internet sportsman courtship, we decided to meet for the first time this morning for a turkey hunt Now a little background on my spring turkey hunting exerience...these birds have been my nemesis! Been able to kill a few hens during fall hunts but I have yet to be on a successful spring gobbler hunt. They have always seemed to be one step ahead and the birds I have called in would always hang up. This morning changed all that. We located a couple gobblers up on a hillside well before sunup and proceeded to start the ascent to where these birds were roosting. Turns out there were 3 birds and all three were hot and making plenty of noise. We made it to a saddle and it sounded like we were close to where these guys were so we set up a couple decoys and Lance started his calling to let them know where to find us. At about 5:30 we could hear the birds fly down and within minutes the birds could be seen strutting up hill a little ways from us. All 3 were running around and strutting and putting on a show. I started getting nervous that they weren't coming any closer and had almost convinced myself that the next turkey that stuck his head into this little opening in the trees was gonna get it.....but I'm glad that didn't happen. One of the birds hopped over a log and started coming down straight towards the decoys and was shortly followed by his two buddies. These birds beelined it to my jake decoy and two were standing next to it wondering what they were going to do to it while the third was doing his strut thing. Well....10 yards is a little too close for comfort and I was starting to worry for the safety of my jake decoy so I decided to scare them off by firing a warning shot... As two of the birds ran or flew to my left, the third bird ran to the right and at about 30 yards got a good amount of #5's to the back of his dome! Guess I just wanted to make the hunt last just a little bit longer since 5:45 sounded a little early to be done Here's my first spring gobbler. 8.5" beard And my bird dog who doesn't seem too interested in a bird this big.... I do want to thanks Lance for tagging along this morning and helping me call this bird in. Great morning and I look forward to hunting with you again sometime!
-
Lance, thanks for posting those pics. You proved yourself a worthy hunt partner and can invite yourself anytime you want! Don't know if that bird was a he-she or not, but if my two other buddies with tags didn't bail out we probably could have found out!
-
Congrats on the birds! Looks like it was a great trip.

Great reminder. Just had mine rechecked a couple of weeks ago just to help reinforce the idea that snakes are BAD! We had a close call two years ago when he decided to retrieve the "moving stick" that was swimming across the river...fortunately he grabbed it close enough behind the head that it couldn't reach around and get its fangs in him. And this leads me to a question for some of you who might know since I've heard several versions: Do rattlers have to strike from a coiled postion to inject venom? Don't see why they couldn't but I've talked to some people who swear that they can't.
