Good eye, its blood. Its stained (dry) but I assume it was pretty fresh.

Cactus Wrens actually make several nests, one for nesting and the others for the male to sleep in when the female is on the other nest. I think this was the secondary nest, the main nest is also on the porch rafter but not in a filmable spot. Amanda keep an eye on the nest becouse if the pair raises another clutch they often use one of the other nests the male build, so I'm told.

Thanks for that link youngbuck very informative!!!

No such thing as the "Enviromental" branch. It is the "research" branch. I know the biologist who is running the bear and lion study, who did not even want to deal with the jaguar and wasn't involved with it his people did it with promition from other G&F people, and that biologist is a BIG time hunter. To think about axeing the research branch because it has nothing to do with the management doesn't make much sence to me. The bear and lion project first started to understand large carnivor movements between sky islands and the Wildlife Conservation Society got involved and it in turn got the boarder issue involved. We are lucky to have the research branch, most states will contract out that work to private companies. Call it what you will. I don't think we will agree on this one. The day the research branch makes our hunting opportunities bettter is the day that I will support them. The reality is that research is generally geared toward making a notable find and the popular culture is to find that humans are bad. Axe 'em. The "game management branch" makes desisions based on what the research branch finds. Yes there is not much research being done on our fav. game animals, but there is some, thats mostly becouse they have been "research out" and we have a good idea what goes on with them. Another reason they don't do more research is becouse of money, its sad I will agree, but theres not a lot of money in that area. We must remember that the game and fish is not a hunting agency but a wildlife agency that has responsibility for ALL wildlife and becouse its a state agency they have to try to make everyone happy.

The law is the law. Your welcome to pick it up just as much as your welcome to do 40mph in a 25mph zone. Do we pick those up becouse we are more comfortable not being cought? Its not worth it to me, just call the WM if in doubt, more often then not I'm sure they will let you have it. And like in the speeding example you may or may not get a ticket depending on the situation and the mood of the officer. Just my $.2. http://www.azgfd.gov/h_f/highlights/highlights_0602.html The issue is discuss in the above link, but this was long before the new rule. And as far as G&F employees picking up heads, I have no problem with it, one of the FEW benifits I believe they should have for being SOOOO underapprecited. They don't pick up as much as we might think because they are not trumping around in the remote areas as some think. Thats just me though.

Thats based on the actions of just one employee right, If I remember corectly he was reletivly new to the department to.

I'm not into crossbows but I must say that thing looks sick. With all the new development in bows I think its about time something like that came out for crossbow hunters.

Great first post! and Congrats. They sure are a blast.

I don't know who was on this capture but I have a good feeling that one of them has worked down in mexico and has darted a jag before.

I hate to get into this but I just have to... since we all love to rant. I'm sorry but I'm getting tiered off all the G&F bashing that goes on here. Believe it or not they are professionals that have gone through years of schooling, training, and experience they are far more qualified to make calls then we are. Most people love to find the falt in everyone else but I’m sorry I’m to busy enjoying life instead of finding fault in everything. I bet you that it was not the G&F’s idea to put the animal down anyway, I’m sure the FWS and the zoo vets made the final call on the issue. Like mentioned earlier, we as hunter are the minority and the G&F is a state agency that has to consider ALL wildlife. Its not a “hunting agency”. I will agree that some projects are a joke but this was not. I’ve seen plenty of money being pent on “wildlife” in town studying how house finches beak sizes have change because of the urban diet but an understanding of top predator in an ecosystem as no management implications, I don’t get that one. The article says that it was caught by accident, maybe not true but guess what ever happened to trust, I know they were catching lions in the area. So if it was snared how are they going to get it out, they have to drug it so way not put a collar on it. No doubt that the animals age influenced the outcome but I hate to say it but it was living on borrowed time and I think its better that they have the body then a hunter stumbling across the skull a few years from now and keep it in there house for who know how long thinking it was a big lion.

Year of the Mearns is over
IHunt2live posted a topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Went out with my dad for our last mearns trip. Lets hope next year will be as good, with fewer hunters . First off I have to mention the trip we had last weekend with my buddy, and his dad and brothers, from Utah. They come down almost every year and this year we spent 2 days hunting mearns and one day out east looking for gambles and scallies. We had a great time, no one was shot this year, so the trip was a success:). We got into plenty of mearns despite finding some of our best spots all shot up by other hunters. We did however find 4 large, hay bail size, packs of pot. We marked it on a GPS quickly and got the heck out of there. While meeting back at the trucks we had an illegal walk right up to us with nothing but the clothes on his back and seemed a little out of it. My buddy spoke Spanish and told him to take off which he did and we suspect that he had just dropped off some of the stash of drugs and was looking for a free ride. Found a BP truck later that day and told them were to find it. Today my dad and I went to an area close to were we have hunted before and found quit a few birds right off the bat. Trick is to find those areas that hunters have yet hit this year. This area was THICK with deer sign and I would love to hunt in there for coues but the brush was pretty thick to which would make glassing nearly impossible. Found a couple of sheds in there to. I added the best one bellow. Scored it at about 43 inches with the broken points and all. Over all it was a GREAT year for mearns. Got a little more difficult towards the end of the season but still lots of birds out there. I learned a ton about hunting these quail and found a lot of great hunting spots that I will be back to in the future. I still can’t get over how much my shorthair has come along this season. He still makes mistakes but overall he has turned into a GREAT huntin dog, except for the fact that he will pick a fight with any other male dog he sees. My new rig that helped me get to all the mearns. My two best huntin buddies doing what they do best, hard taking picks of them on point in the tall grass and rushing the pic to put the camera down and the gun up Me and one of my huntin buddies haul for the day. I know I should have one with my dad but I forgot. O, and the shed I found today. G2 was about 9.5 inches long and it looks like it might have had a kicker -
Year of the Mearns is over

I agree with what RR said. They were hit hard all season and I say TONS of out of state plates, I personaly helped out some guys from Arkansas. I also had a budy come down from Utah who is a hard core bird hunter and he said he has hardly done much bird hunting up in utah because it was so poor. Not sure what the other western states were like but I think pheasants in the midwest was the only option for GREAT upland this past year. -
My father (Kc0rr i think) is and has been since I was born. He has been pushing me to do it but I just haven't had the time

Mearns Mounts
IHunt2live replied to Matt Tanner's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Some good looking mounts there. Does she do our other 2 species of quail? Getting a mount of all three species has been a dream of mine. -
I hope you all catch my drift...I certainly have no disdain for Jaguars, I just simply hate the way enviro wackos use endangered species as leverage to enforce their policies on those of us who have been using the land forever. I only envision massive lawsuits being filed by SWC Biological Diversity and Defenders of Wildlife to close off the land to hunting as a Jaguar preserve. There are several wildlife refuges already along the border - how many more do we need? Buenos Aires and Cabeza Prieta? I just don't trust the present administration, especially the Department of Interior. I think a lot of us share your feeling on that topic. Theres been a few situations lately that may set a president agianst what some wackos want to do. A few cases, such as the lesser prairie chicken, were proposed to be federaly listed as endagered but was not because its only a subspecies and the greater prairie chicken is doing alright. Spotted owls to I think, some owl, used to be found, maybe still is in low numbers, was going through the same proses of being protected but was not because there are more then enough in mexico so to protect them in the extrems of their enviroment was determined not plausable. Not saying that some enviromental groups can't get what they want, they have a lot of money, but thanks to projects like this science has a lot more say in these situations.

To cool! Thats the project that I'm a part of during the summers but I'm to bussy during the school year to help out with the lion stuff. I'm glad they got a collar on one. Better to have concret data then know they are in the area and wonder what the heck they do. I saw let them come back to make up for the mistake of removing them in the first place. Are they realy going to build a fence that keeps aniamls from crossing in areas were the jaguars are most likely to cross? I don't think they are. but I could be wrong.

What about a New Topic?
IHunt2live replied to gonhntn's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I respect your opinion but IMO I would rather hunt just about every weekend of a 4.5 month long season and watch my pup go from zero to hero in a single season and shoot several dozen birds over him then taking the chance of maybe getting a tag and hunt a weekend or two out of the year. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE to hunt for horns and I'm glad I don't have to choice between the two. -

The "Spending Bill"
IHunt2live replied to Coues 'n' Sheep's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
http://www.newsweek.com/id/184454 Ran across this article and thought it was interesting. I like the line "They found that those with the "views" of parkland and mountain ranges had a greater sense of well-being, clearer thinking, and a greater sense of connection to the natural world." theres our problem right there. to many city folks who don't get out so they don't think clearly . -
Aplications & the Economy
IHunt2live replied to Coues 'n' Sheep's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I have to say the my aplication was different this year in that I finnaly felt I have the time and put in for a tag and not just bounus points. I feel sorry for those who have to make the choice wither they can afford to hunt or not. I HAVE TO HUNT, or no one would want to be around me. Thank goodness for quail so I don't have to wait for tags. -
could be feral, recently, or maybe from a breading population. I found this skull, a lot like yours back in high school and ran into some feral pigs nearby later that year. They almost seemed to tame and thought they could have just gotten lose, homes weren't to far away, but there were two adults and two babies. The adults were about the size of a small javelina though. this was south of tucson
