    over the counter bow coues

To me the difficulty is not in hunting pressure but getting close enough for a shot. During archery hunts I hardly ever run into other hunters, not saying there not out there though. Being able to hunt just about anywhere in the state, and hunting during the rut, I would say its a good tag. Give it a try and remember any coues with a bow is a trophy.

    Some more of Napoleon's Critters

Those are some nice animals he's got there. I had to laugh when I saw the pic on the tv in the last elk photo. I was suprised no one has mentioned it. I didn't see it the first time I looked. Goes to show we are all like to look at antlers.

    3 for 3

Life tried just about everything to cut into this hunting trip between school, work, and my wife and i buying our first condo. I worked my tail of and was able to get out opening weekend with my brother and dad. Like many of you I saw plenty of other hunters, which was uncommon of this area, and wished had seen more bucks. I did see two lions opening morning. I've thought I would start buying lion tags for such occations but hadn't done it yet. I learned. I shot mine the evening of the second day at 400 yards and hit the heart. I have a little more confidence in my rife now and my ability to shoot it, bad thing is it will be harder to convince my wife that i need a new scope, which I've planning on getting. I was hopeing for someing bigger but after not seeing much i thought I would turn our luck around and get us started. You can see that he damaged one of his spicks while in velvet. it took my brother and I 5 hours to get him back to the truck, I had to go and shoot him in the nastiest country in the area. The next morning we slept in but hunted in the evening. My brother and I spotted a fork and were chasing it but some hikers ran him off. While stalking the fork though we herd my dad shot and it turned out that his shot, which conected on a 2X3, jumped some other bucks that ran up the draw strait to my brother and I. we saw three bucks, a spike, what I thought was a fork, and a nice 3X3 that just would not come out of a little draw with only 2 more minutes of light left so my brother shot the "forkie". He ended up being a decent little 3X3 minus one brow-tine. Had a great time hunting with the fam. and now thanks to my dad I have a good idea were those bucks go when they have a little hunting pressure. Just glad i could fill our tags in this bussy time in life and help my dad and brother get a new personal best. Well, here is my Buck My dad's and Brother's bucks

How do I do a European mount

I once heard a tip that I have yet to try, haven't had the chance yet, and thats to cover the antlers, mostly the bases with aluminum foil. Wrap it as tight as you can to the antlers. I herd that it will prevent any discoloration of the antlers if they are in the water when you boil it. I still would avoid putting the antlers themselves in the water.

    Hybrids

If it is a hybrid they can't do anything but you better make sure before you shoot!!

    Hybrids

If you would like to know for sure talk to Jim Heffelfinger at the Tucson AZGF office. He knows a whole lot about that stuff and I know for a fact that he loves freaky deer like that. Get in contact with him. Best way to tell is the gland on the inside of their back leg. A hybrid gland will be halfway between a whitetails length and a mule deer length.

    Mearns Scouting Trip

I haven't been out looking for mearns yet but I sure can't wait till they open. This will only be the second year I've hunted them so i still have a lot to learn. If anyone is intrested in maybe getting together for a quail hunt drop me a line. I have a couple of pointers, one good one and they other still has some refining to do. First things first and thats a coues tag in my pocket opening next weekend.
  13. Well I got back from my Pheasant hunting trip in North Dakota on Sunday. It was quit a trip. Two other guys and I drove up and that was an experience on its own. Our truck broke down in the middle of New Mexico and after spending the night in the truck waiting for the service center of a ford dealership to open we finnaly got a rental and headed north. After a quick stop in Denver to see my freainds family and a quick nap, we finally made it to North Dakota 8am the 24th. We met up with the rest of our hunting party and headed out to hunt. The three of us from AZ hunted together the whole time and we would met up with the other 10 guys here and there to hunt the big fields. The first two days it got up to about 80 degrees and the last two days it stayed about 40 degrees. We would see over a thousand birds a day and all 13 in our party limmited (three Roosters) all four days of hunting. Had tons of memerable experiences, to many to share. Saw lots of Antelope, Whitetails, and Mulies. On the last day the three of us from AZ found an awsome field and limited out in less the 45 minutes. Here are a few pics for all you all. Now its time to focus my coues hunt in a couple of weeks. Me and my two Dogs, who did awsome.

The tale of the Big G2 buck

If I could show you the sheds you'd see that he's a Coue's, also I've watched him running around and he's definitely got a nice white flag, he likes to show it to me as he runs away over the next set of ridges... There are no muleys that I've seen in this area, however I've heard that they used to live there. Something interesting I heard the other day - over in Saguaro National Park East they did a census of the deer around the desert loop drive - apparently there used to only be Muley's over there, this summer when they went out there were only Coues. Maybe somebody has heard of this happening before? I've herd and seen the same thing Tyson. I visited with Don Swan, Biologist at SNP East, back in high school and he said the same thing. I think he said that there was some mulies but maybe there are fewer now. Thats a shame, they had some big ones in there. Seen some whitetails in the flats of 34a and I haven't seen them but I herd from a good source that theres a few whitetails in 37a and 37b. It just goes to show you how adaptable those whitetails can be. By the way.... nice sheds. I wish I had the chance to find the sets off of a buck from different years. Are you still seeing him around?

    Quail Season!!!!

I'll wait till it cools down to hunt myself but I did helped Jim Heffelfinger at the quail check station north of Tucson and the avaerage was about 1.5 birds per day. Bellow average but better then last year.
  17. I finally get to take my first out of state hunting trip for Pheasant in North Dakota in about a week!!!! I've tried to make a trip the past few years and wasn't able to pull it off with school and all but this semester I think is going to work and I am PUMPED. I spent the first 6 years of my life in North Dakota and have never been back. I don't remember it much and never hunted up there but friends of the family, who used to live up there when we did and come quail hunting down here often, take a trip back each year to chase pheasant. I quail hunting budy of mine goes with them each year and I'll be driving, about 24 hours, up with him. I hope this desert boy and my two thinned haired pointers wont get to cooled.

    Camo?

Lots of realy good advice here. I use natural gear and I have some realtree pants that for some reason got realy faded that I use alot. But like you have all said, its about how fast you move, if your useing the tarian and veg. to your advantage. One thing I do is to make sure my clothing isn't tight. One reason I can't stand tight clothes but mostly it helps to break up your outline. I use a soft brim had for that reason.

    Coues calender

Maybe you could use more then one pic per month. Gives more people a chance to be in it and might help to solve the resolution problem. Pluse I can bet that there might be some harsh words exchaged on the forum if we have to look at one guys face for a month.
  20. Just got these scanned in and thought I would share them. I'm usally pretty destracted quail hunting so I have not taken much pics but I have taken a few over the years. Heres a couple that I liked.

    What's in your Hunting Daypack?

Hey Casey, I though your pack included rocks? Nothing you plan for I guess. I try to keep mine as light as I can. Ammo knife water, twice as much as I need snacks, icluding salty snacks TP Cell phone, Turned off, even if I don't get service theres more but can't think of it

    colder weather

From what I've seen in the southern part of the state, but I haven't done much hunting high in the pines (the hightest I go is in the oaks), is that there realy isn't much of "migration" due to cold weather. Even snow doesn't push them down because snow won't last that long. I'm interested in what the rest of you have to say who have more experince up high.
