This past weekend I had a freind, his dad and two of his brother come down from Utah to Quail hunt. They come down most every year exept for last year because the quail hunting was not all that good. We spent two days hunting over near Wilcox and on the last day we went down south for some mearns. Between them, another friend I hunt with down here and my two dogs we had 12 dogs. We needed that many dogs in order not to kill them. The first day we got into mostly gambels with a few scallies. I'm not sure how many birds we ended up with but between the 6 of us we probable had 50+. My Geman shorthair finally starting showing some progress and had a couple of awesome points. The second day had a ruff start. We got to the area we were going to hunt and saw a covey of quail right by the trucks. We got the dogs out and got about 6 quail in just a few minutes then the excident happened. A quail got up between The father from Utah and one of his sons and the son was mistaken were his dad was and the dad got shot. He was about 30 yards away when he got shot and ended up with 30+ pelats from his hip, ups his right arm to his head and neck. One of the other guys we were hunting with went through the same thing about 10 years ago so he calmed him down and knew what to do. He went to the clinic in Wilcox who sent him on to Tucson. Those doctors in either place hardly did anything for him so he basicly just walked out. Four of us continued hunting the rest of that day and we got into a TON of scallies. My shorthair once agian did great. I think lightbulb went off in his head finnaly. The third day we ment the dad who got shot and his sone who went with him to Tucson, down south for some mearns. Boy did we get into some mearns. They were headed back that evening and they had some car problem so we only hunted mearns for three hours but that was enough. We got seperated into two groups. One group went high and ended up with 11 mearns between the three of us and the other 3 went low and had one shy of their limit. Anyway we had a great time dispite some excitment and everyone had a great time.... most of the time. I widh I would have taken more pics but with the fast pace of quail hunting I didn't take much.

My Father-in-law is 65 and still going strong. I sometimes have a hard time keeping up with him on those coues hills. He has a cabin on 40 acres in 34A that border national forest and those hills he hunts are crazy steep.

I've never had him mount anything but I know him and he is a great guy. His dad tought art at the UofA for years so in my opinion he knows art. He also own Cola Blanca outfitters and guides coues down in Mexico. Go down to his shop, its quit large and there will more then likely be lots of example of his work. Mike

I think the major issue is if the deer runs into the unit that you are unable to hunt after the shot. Can you retrieve it? I guess just make the shot count and try to put him down right there.

Heres another pic. A friend sent it to me also and it had the same story.

Great job! I went out today and didn't spot a single pig.

Thats sure a nice buck. I think whitetails are pretty animals but I have a healthy respect for those desert mulies to. I picked up a left over pig tag for Jan. but I'm also going to keep my eyes pealed for the big mulies I know that are in the area. -

And then what? -
I to get upset, maybe disapointed is the right word, when I se other people in my hunting spots but I guess we just have to deal with it. One thing about Arizona and most of the west is that there is so much public land anyone can hunt. I'm greatful for that. I think most hunters out there will feel the same one. None of us enjoy messing up someone elses hunt but thats the way it goes. I feel bad when I'm quail hunting, with the dogs beeper collars going off and all, during this time and I run into a deer hunter but I have just as much right to hunt as they do. I don't ever perposly mess up their hunt but it just happens. Good luck to the rest of you that have yet to fill your dec coues tag and I hope I don't run into you when I'm quail hunting three days this weekend.

What is the best hunting show on TV
IHunt2live replied to SilentButDeadly's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
I have a new fav. program. Let me tell you about it. MacMillan river outdoos, I think its called, on the outdoor channel. They were hunting in New Mexico for elk and a guy takes a shot on a elk looking right at him, a small 5x5. They let the elk sit overnight. They cut to another hunt to help you forget about the elk that he just shot. Cut back to the elk hunt and sudenly that 5x5 turns into a nice 6x6 350+ class bull. I thought I may be wrong but I look at it over and over again and even slow it down to make sure. What a joke! -
My father-in-law was just got back from his cabin were I had my trailcam set up and had tons of pictures of javelinas, a few whitetail does and this pic of a lion. It was my best set yet and my first lion, this pic and seeing two lions on my deer hunt I'm considering a sign to start buying a lion tag each year. The camera was set not 40 yards from the cabin.

Hey... I've learned my lesson. I also just sent in a check for a left over pig tag for the area. Thought I would take a few days before school starts and try to get one with my bow. I might have to hunt a differnt area nearby because I think my father-in-law has claimed those pigs as his and wont let me shoot one till their number improve. Mike -
Governor executive order
IHunt2live replied to Rembrant's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
I've never been big in political discusions but as I have gotten older I'm getting more and more involved. I just got an e-mail from someone at the UofA saying that the school is not even advertising for an empty faculty position left by Paul Krausman. Dr. Krausman was the mamalogy instructor and was the mediator between the school of renewable resources at the U of A and the G&F. They are not even advertising for the position, a pretty importent one, because of the looming budget cuts due to the states budget deficit. All this after the U of A just raised their tuition? Paying as much as you do to get a "top notch" education I expect to be instructed by more then just grad. students who are filling the whole for now. And to hear that all the money is going to go to this health care benifits to same sex partners is a joke. I HATE politics! -
That road has been a public road for more than 100 years according to research by AZGFD. There shld be no eminent domain taking needed. The county shld have taken up this fight on behalf of its citizens 4 or 5 years ago when Ms. Tapia closed it. Jack Thats what I was going to say. I'de like to shake the hand of the people who have not given up on this fight even after 4 to 5 years. I've been locked out of an area by a landowner who locked a gate on a road that leads to forest service land I used to hunt. It SUCKS and no one in authority has given me the time of day to talk about it.

How many days in the field?
IHunt2live replied to KidBowHunter's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Younghunter, If you ever get married, you better keep this kind of data classified and plead the 5th!! Mark I've had some friends you have married and their wives who didn't know how much time the've spend in the field and marriages suffered almost ended. I would say that you tell your future wife how much time you spend in the field or date during hunting season. Or if your lucky find a wife like mine who wants to spend as much time out in the field as you. P.S. Dang I widh I could be out in the field as much as you. Hopefuly when I'm done with college and get my degree in Wildlife Biology work will let me do that. -
Were these quail that you flushed? From what I've seen quail will hold tighter when its wet.

Handgun carry during archery hunt
IHunt2live replied to live24wheel's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
barrell must be no longer the 6 inches the gun must have just iron sights and your legal. -
I don't have a whole lot to add here but this year I tryed some of those spray-on water repelant on my dogs kennel cover and I was realy impressed with Camp Dry's silicon spray. I cover half the cover with it and ran out and tried another brand and Camp Dry worked the best. Mike

Looking at getting a hand gun
IHunt2live replied to IHunt2live's topic in Handgun Hunting for Coues Deer
Thanks for all the great edvice! I was already leaning the way a lot of you are pointing but it feels better that a lot of you think the same way. I'm not looking for something to realy hunt with but mostly a back up gun and something to carry when I'm out shed hunting. I was thinking that the barrel had to be no larger the 6 inches to but I think I'll try to get a 4 incher, a bit easier to cary and as heavy. We'll see if I can't convince my wife to let me buy one after U of A takes all my money. It doesn't help that I'm talking about getting set up to reload shot-shells either. -
I would say I only spend a couple months out of the year LOOKING for sheds. I do keep my eyes open when ever I'm out in the field, deer or bird hunting. In fact I found a small mule deer set 2x3 this past weekend out quial hunting. oddly enough the little guys were not 10 feet apart.

To me the difficulty is not in hunting pressure but getting close enough for a shot. During archery hunts I hardly ever run into other hunters, not saying there not out there though. Being able to hunt just about anywhere in the state, and hunting during the rut, I would say its a good tag. Give it a try and remember any coues with a bow is a trophy.

Those are some nice animals he's got there. I had to laugh when I saw the pic on the tv in the last elk photo. I was suprised no one has mentioned it. I didn't see it the first time I looked. Goes to show we are all like to look at antlers.
