Morning Mearns
IHunt2live replied to IHunt2live's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I didn't even notice the bird in the first pic till a second ago. Can you see it? -
COOL, through me off at first but I like it.

During the early archery season I was walking to a hill top and found a horseshoe. I usualy don't bother picking them up but the first thing I thought when I saw it was, "A lucky horseshoe I better pick it up". Later that morning I stuck my first archery coues. I haven't brought it on my other hunts but maybe I should.

just be patient. I've heard of the bigger bucks letting all the younger bucks do all the work of herding does together and when the does come into estrus the bigger bucks will run the smaller bucks off and take over the herd. Last year I saw a MONSTER muley buck rutting hard in the middle of january. He had a heck of a time keeping the smaller bucks away and keeping the does together. I saw a couple of small groups of does wonder off without him knowing because he was to bussy. This went on all afternoon, nonstop. never saw him stop even for a bite to eat.

I talked with the biologist at Saguaro East and he told me the same thing. I talked with another biologist that said he was called out to take a deer out of Rita Ranch area that was disoriented and hanging out in peoples yards and it was a coues.

I'm just cerious how many people beleive that the big game population would be a whole lot more "healthy" (you can define that term in your own way), if we could eliminate, or dresticaly reduce, the predator population. I hope this doesn't come across as I'm against predator hunting, I for one wont pass up a chance to shoot legal predator, I am just wondering what you all think.

sitting water during late hunt????
IHunt2live replied to jonscaife's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Some of you might remember this pic of a buck I found last January. I took it from the only elevated spot in the area and were the deer are at is totally flat. Anyway, there is a water hole not 200 yards from were I say him but there area also 3 other water wholes +- 1/2 mile. I’ve thought about sitting at water but knowing theres plenty other places he could get water, I just don’t have the patients to sit on water when I could spot and stalk. Am I being rational in my thoughts? I just think sitting water wouldn’t not be my best option with this area. What do you all think? -
I would say thats its WAS pretty close. Look at the date on it. its 18 years old. Yes measuring density and numbers of deer is an "imperfect" science but its been done for so long, tested in many different ways that it fairly accurate.

salt and feed no more in 2009

Thanks for that amanda, you are right. They don't have to come on here at all. I know some that would love to contribute but just don't have the time. Many of us will complain about this here and do little more about it because here its easy but we have the opertunity to go to the meeting, which will mean more. Plug for the public meetings . Mr. Jonathan is right also, we don't have it all that bad like some other states. Maybe we should all just take a min. and think how luck we have it that we have these resources and in this country/state we have the opertunity to use them. We are lucky living here in the states. Beleive it or not but I beleive that the majority of the department are a great bunch of men and women who, not only enjoy the outdoors like us, but have given their professional careers for a LOW paying job, why because thats what the enjoy, are passionate about, and have the goal of using our resources today while making sure we will have them tomarrow. I hope to work for the department in the future for those same reasons. Sure there are things that we may not agree with but thats whats going to happen when the public, not just hunters, own the resources. some more of my $.02 -
Got my pig tag the other day and I already smell a little javi musk on it .

I have to add that I've talk to some G&F guys and they would probably be more involved in this site if we weren't some harsh sometimes. But I must also say that though its great Ron posted some of the justification on here but honestly I am a little disapointed like many of you that he has not responded. I do understand that the G&F right now is in a crunch for man power, with the state hire freeze (thought they get no tax dollars, Thanks you Nappy), and many of these guys are just spread to thin and may not have the time to post BUT don't jump into the pool if you don't want to get wet. STOP THE BAN!!! -
What makes a successful hunt for ..... YOU?
IHunt2live replied to WinMag's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I think I need to ponder on this a bit. I have to get out hunting, its me release from the day to day grind, and feel good everytime I go out but I do have to say that I feel a little "less successful" when I come home empty handed. When I go bird hunting and end up with just a few birds I'm ok with that IF my dogs performed well or learned something during the trip. But I also feel like I was unsuccessful if I was unable to get my dogs into birds and give them the reward of having the chance of putting a bird in their mouth. For coues, if its a rifle hunt, I usualy get all excited and feel like I have a good chance which I feel leads to disapointment when I come home empty handed. I have to add though that thats comeing from someone who has only shot 3 deer, and I'm sure i would probably feel different if I have a bunch more deer under my belt. But then again, why do I go archery hunting so much? I understand my chances are so slim but yet I go and thats why I think I don't feel as bad coming home empty handed, I've excepted the fact that I will probably not get anything. Basicly I guess what I'm saying is that it all depends on my entisipations for the hunt. But its true what they say, a bad day in the feild is better then a good day at work or school I might add. -
A monster for sure. If you all haven't been taking a look at the G&F photos you should! There are some great animals being posted.

IHunt2live replied to CAelknuts's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
From my experience with a call I would say definently bring one. My I think is buy quaker boy "Bear squealer” I think. I would say don’t use it until it is a last resort like when you bust a herd. I don’t speak pig so I can’t ask what they are thinking but I imagine they thought they were in danger and were running and when they hear the call they think someone got cought and they come in for the rescue. I used it last year after I missed, well grazed one pig (just a flesh wound), my first shot on a pig and the herd ran off, maybe 80 yards or so, started calling and they all came running back. The one a grazed was acualy the first one to come running n and was able to put him down for good. So yes, they due work. -
No blaze orange requirments, no you don't need to check in your animals, though you need to call in your harvest of a deer. You aplied for a deer tag?, you get those over the counter. and your pig tag should come eventualy. best camo, pigs can't see all that well so don't wory about it, deer, I think the best camo is just remaining still. Go with a light camo patern, the more busy dark camo paterns don't work well at long distances, I use kings camo or natural gear.

I guess it just all depends on were you are. I've archery hunted in Dec in a popular unit in a popular place and have rearly ran into rifle hunters. Maybe I'm just lucky.
