    Red jeep in 36A

Could the red jeep have been a sort of red ford ranger?

    Garrett's first buck!

Way to go Garrett! What more can a person say! I know when I met Garrett I was IMPRESSED at what a skilled hunter he was at such a young age!
  3. I was or am wondering how many people are going to camp out during their hunt or drive each day.

Well seems like you found a couple of shooters! Hope they are still there when your hunt comes around

    Noon Siesta or

Of course it depends on where I am hunting and how I am feeling, But I can say I find or see just as many deer moving from abou 11am to 3:30pm or so as I do at other times. If things are not working or feeling good with the back I'll glass from the truck and find high points or the best I can to drive to and glass from. You'll be surprized the amount or numbers of deer you'll see. I used to be one who would leave camp before daylight and return after dark. But now a days just can't do that style of hunting so I have adapted and still find and even kill some very nice bucks. So I say glass during the time of day when most people have left the field as the deer seem to know this as well and move then.

    AGFD and the Wolf

No but almost every sound we played while calling had them respond, so trying to call bear was a waste of time so to speak.

    AGFD and the Wolf

Well I just spent a week in unit 27 and have to say the Wolf program appears to be a joke from what I saw! We had the "lucK' of seeing several packs of the so called wolfs some with collars some or most without. It was the first time I have seen Mexican Wolfs with spots or tri-colored I sure wish I had had a camera with me to take pictures of them so I could post them.
  8. How many people on this list would like to have a predator hunting contest? If so what would you like as far as rules? 1 or 2 day with a common check only or have a common starting point as well etc. maybe then at the end a skinning contect? or cook out lets hear some ideas. AzTrapper
  9. I live in the North end of 36A, Close to Pima Mine rd. & Mission. My hunt starts Nov 7th and goes to the 13th. My early scouting hasn't show me much here in the north end. But it seems the best scouting times are just begining for me. I know there was some nice bucks here last year after the season, which kind of surprized me with all the hunters that showed up last seasons. seems like the word got out on how to get into the area. I know I wish I had a Mule deer tag instead of a whitetail as I have seen a couple of three huge bucks in places you would never think they would be so to speak. Of course the fact that there are more mountain lions in this area than I would like to see. So if you plan on hunting the north end of 36a besure to get a mountain lion tag as well. aztrapper where at do you see a lot mountain lions? I've been trying to get one for a lot of years maybe you can help. Your right in the middle of Lion heaven!

    Predator Contest

The way things have been the last few years I wish they would put a zipper in my back. Plus they seem to know what tags i get as they always try and plan the deals for the middle of my hunts. But like I said we'll make the Predator Contest happen some how just maybe not the date we set.
  11. Ok I know we had planned and worked out the rules and set a date for our first Coues Whitetail Predator Hunting Contest. The problem that popped up is the fact I am going to have to have more back surgery and the date hasn't been confirmed yet BUT it looks like it will be right around the planned date. Until the exact date is set we will either have to put it on hold or someone else head it up. When I know the date forsure We can go from there and maybe move the date of our contest. What I am having done on my back is a new Spinal Stem Implant installed. This will put me out of action for a few days or so. What a spinal stem implant is- Its a unit installed in the back with wires running up the spine to the nerves, this allows me to send elec. shocks to the nerves to block the pain. The best way I can discribe the feel is kind of like the shock of a TENS unit or maybe like a lower shock from a spark pulg wire when you touch them. But as far as the contest we will just find a better date when I know the date or someone else can ramrod it. Let me know what everyone wants to do

    Long Range Shooting

My hunting set-up is a Remington 721 300 H&H mag with a custom barrel (1 inch bull 28 inches long) with a leupold T10 scope, and custom trigger. The load I shoot is a 168 grain Berger VLD with 68 grains of IMR 4350 which gives me sub 1/2 inch groups at 200 yards. I use 200 yards instead 100 for testing loads. I went Berger bullets several years ago and found I picked not only FPS but also is flatter shooting with the Berger than others. I have shot everything from pigs to elk with them and have always had one shot kills. I do try for the high shoulder shot as it will do everything I want even if I am off a little. I have tried Accubonds and could not get the gun to shoot anything better than 2-3 inchs at 200 yards so they were out, I myself want the bullet to enter the animal and "blow" up inside to release all of its engery inside and the Berger seems to work. The rifle has over 25 head of big game with the Berger and all have been one shot one step kills.

    SNAKE!!!

Your right about filleting them out it's the best way to go! Batter and deep fried Now thats hard to beat
  19. Well Oct 3th is the start on my Turkey hunt in Unit-27. I normally try to get a unit 1 Turkey tag and combine Turkey, Bear, Lion and predator hunting but this year it's Unit-27 which I havn't hunted in many years. I am going to camp out and plan on getting up there a few days early to do some scouting and calling. Is anyone else going up for the hunt? If so maybe we can meet up someplace for a cup? Also can anyone suggest a descent place to maybe grab a bite to eat if I get tired of my cooking? I did notice they changed the rules for Turkey to shotgun shooting shot this year. It's always been fun in the past to go out calling and only have to carry one gun for a great chance at a mixed bag from Predators to Bear and Lion and Turkey. But that has changed Also if you have a good area you would like to share I wouldn't mind LOL

    What a day! (Updated)

That's good to hear! I even let you have so shells to shoot for the 12 gauge if you need them. They are 3inch mag copper plated BB's which do a good job on most predators out to about 60-70 yards with a reg. full choke. As you found out I do things a little different as far stands go. Hunting the thick cover can be full of surprizes and lots of close fast shooting. But next time when the fur is "good" we'll hit some more open ground as well.

    Distance?

Please, don't take this personal..... but I HATED people that could not leave my traps alone!!! That piggy would have lived if it was in my trap, because I always carried a "pig stick"..... a 5' pole with a cable noose for releasing animals that you don't want to dispatch. Just like the one the dog catchers use. All safe and humane! I am 110% in support of situations like Tony was in and of vehicle injured animals, but this thing gets out of hand when you start almost dispatching a wounded animal running accross a hill infront of you or shooting something in someone's trap.... Nothing worse than walking up on a $450.+ bobcat that has a 30-06 hole ripped through both sides of it. Seems that I had a friend come up to one of his sets one time and had a dead critter hangin' in the tree branches where nothing could molest it.... obviously a conscientious outdoorsman had cleanly dispatched the critter and secured it for the trapper. That was cool.... IMO. H4L, Well said and I do agree that there are many variables. That is why I always say when ideal conditions allow for a longer shot. Example: Any antelope further than 35yds. that is looking at you when you shoot an arrow at it will probable jump the string or walk right out of the kill zone.... I had a walking antelope buck jump to a run at 52 yds and I missed him by 3 feet!! Very few critters will stand still for the approaching arrow if they hear the shot & can see the arrow.... And in rifle shooting the wind is a factor, again there are guidelines or rules you the hunter must be aware of, and research that can counter the the wind issue to some degree. However, it all falls on us as the hunter to say those words to ourselves.... "Shoot.... or Don't Shoot".... we have to know, in part by experiance, education, ethics, and common sense whether or not we can truely make this happen or if we are hoping for a "Wing and a Prayer" to get us through it. Perfect practice makes practice prefect..... It is our responsibility. LOL I feel and felt the same as you!

    Distance?

Well for one the trapper would of released the pig as they carry the equipment for doing just that. Second the onle real misery that pig was in was from you and you cousin. How do I know this well I am a trapper and I have caught and released pigs in the past, many of the pigs had ear tags put in them before we released them. Yes the Game and Fish dept. had provided us with the tools to do the ear tagging.
  23. Seems like a lot of people are not camping like they used too. I live in 36A and have the Nov hunt but am planning on maybe camping out a couple of nights to avoid the drive each day,
