I have really enjoyed hunting javelina through the years. This one came on the 5th of February in the extreme southern part of NM

Does the pistol grip allow you to move the binos left and right as well as up and down?

New pair of boots wanted for low desert hot hunting
cessna replied to stalkincoues's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Kennetrek Desert Guides, with wool socks. Good boot for southern NM. I've tried different boots, but always come back to Kennetrek. -
I just read this post. That is a nice javelina. Congratulations.

That really is a nice javelina. Congrats.

naturebob, I tend to hang out on the upper end of the unit. Seen some nice mule deer and some good coues. This is the first year I have not drawn a WT tag. The odds are still reasonable for drawing a WT tag in this area. With everybody wanting a Coues now (it seems to be the buzz deer right now), it may get harder to draw in the coming years.

After attending the A-Plus meeting in Farmington and getting a look at the deer proposals, there are a few things I like. In Unit 23 (except the Burros) hunt they have added 50 WT tags. Also for 2011/2012-2014/15 they seperated the MD hunter from the Wt hunters. Also as listed in the Justification of Change column it says. "Separate the MD and WTD rifle seasons to reduce conflict of concurrent hunts with different bag limits (one WTD hunt moved into early December" Having hunted WTD in AZ a lot of times, that sounds good to me. Any thoughts?

My WT unit is coming friday Mark. i appreciate your answering my questions while you were at the expo. Can't wait to use it. It was purchased from you after a comparison side-by-side with a FP unit. Much clearer, and I really don't need hundreds of sounds. Again thanks for being a Coues Whitetail sponsor.

My vote's there for you Marcy.

USING A HIGH PITCH SOUND SUCH AS A BIRD OR RODENT IN YOUR E-CALLER SEEMS TO WORK IN THE AREA I LIVE IN. ALSO I DON'T TEND TO USE A GREAT DEAL OF VOLUME ON MY E-CALLER. CALL CONTINUALLY WITH BRIEF PAUSES. MAKE YOUR STANDS AT LEAST 45 MIN TO AN HOUR. LACK OF MOVEMENT AND USING CAMO FOR EVERTHING IS IMPORTANT. IF YOU DON'T WEAR GLOVES, CAMO YOUR HANDS ESPECIALLY YOUR FINGERNAILS. SCENT IS IMPORTANT, BUT SEEMS TO BE SECONDARY TO SIGHT. I USE A COVER SPRAY OF CEDAR OR JUNIPER. THIS IS FOR THE AREA I CALL IN (NW NM). THESE ARE JUST A FEW OF MY TECHNIQUES, MAYBE NOT THE BEST BUT HAVE WORKED FOR ME THROUGH THE YEARS. ANYWAY, GOOD HUNTING. I HOPE THESE TIPS HELP YOU. MAYBE NOT THE BEST, BUT LIKE I SAID. THEY WORK FOR ME.

Use good D batteries. Make sure your alignment is where you want it. Good bang for the buck.

Just making a test run on my avatar Amanda. I'm no computer whiz, so I'm checking. Thanks.

I remember the days of hunting out of our cars. I also remember Aguila Bill. I stayed in a place called Burro Jims Motel (and all that implies) While working for APS. We also hunted on a peak north of town. I think it was called Smith peak. Good Mule Deer hunting. Thanks for bringing back good memories.

I'd like to start a debate.....about points....
cessna replied to Coues 'n' Sheep's topic in The Campfire
Yep, it's a three point. What makes the difference anyway? The trophy quality is in the eye of the hunter who took him. Really nice buck, congrats! Amanda makes a good argument for changing the scoring procedure. -
To add to your knowledge base about Coues Whitetail, I would recommend Jim Heffelfingers book "Deer of the Southwest". It's well written and very informative. I've been hunting for most of my 66 years and you never quit learning.

Thanks muleybull, I'm headed that way in a few days to scout for a few days. I'll let you know how it goes. Check your PM.

I finally drew a Nov 7-11 WT tag for GMU23 rifle hunt here in NM. There are also 400 MD rifle hunters at the same time. I realize I need to stay high in the unit, but was looking for a general to work cameras this summer and pass along some information to you other 50WT tag holders. This was my third choice hunt so I've not done my homework for this area like I should.

I just finished reading Jim Heffelfingers book on Deer of the Southwest. He seems to cover it well.

I understand that Coues can get most of their moisture requirements from the vegetation they eat in a normal rainfall year. Thus they are less likely to reply on waterholes. Would you consider this a drought year in central Arizona and New Mexico? This probably will have a direct bearing on how I scout and hunt.

Army surplus military mattress bags work great for game bags.

Thanks Chris for sponsoring this site. I really enjoy getting your magazine. Keep up the good work.

I use the Outdoorsman setup with my Vortex binoculars. They also have some movement. But they work very well.
