I am not into blackpower right now, but have often considered getting into it. I think they would be a great challange to hunt with. You also have a slight better chance of drawing a tag for your selected game. What sugestions does anyone have when buying your first muzzleloader? greyghost

Thanks for the great information everyone! It sounds like a great place to learn. I like to keep my options open and have as many places to hunt as possible. The deer should be dropping their head gear pretty soon, so this summer would be a great time to investagate to area. Are they found all over the various terrain? Or are there better elevations than others? I also noticed that the unit boarders aginst a reservation, do any of you go close to the boarder? On the map they look like some secluded areas. Its also not a bad drive from the valley. Well thanks again for the input. greyghost

I have heard a lot of people talking about unit 23, is that a hot unit for coues? I looked at the game and fish web page and found some interesting things about that unit but would have no idea where to start looking. I researched some more and it looks like a good place, but with all this talk about the unit it sounds pretty populated... with people! Does anyone know what the hunting pressure is like up there? On a map there looks to be a lot of roads but there are some places that you can backpack in for 5 - 6 miles. If thats what it takes to get away from the pressure than so be it. What other advise can you all give reguarding this "HOT" unit? Thank you, greyghost.

My choise of broadhead is Muzzy. A fixed 3 blade does real well. I gets good penitration and has real good flight. As long as the blades are sharp most heads on the market work well. Like everyone has said and heard the biggest thing is placement of your shot. I belive you can take down almost any animal with any broadhead as long as you get a solid hit. I just don't like to see people take a risky shot because they belive they have a top dollar tip. Even the best heads on a poorly placed shot don't get the job done. geryghost

I have have been told (a few years back) that the back side or the North side of the Winchester Mts. held some decent coues bucks. I have never hunted that area for anything but my sorce was pretty good. I was under the impression that 31 was not a respectable area for whitetail? I know nothing about it first hand. What does anyone know about these mountain ranges? greyghost

I can see how following advice like Scott gave would pay off. I must have taken years of failure to gain that type of experience. Sounds like a serious hunter to me. greyghost
