I usually dont like to post on equipment because everyone seems to be an expert on here now. But I did a lot of research before I just bought my 300 win mag scope and I was in the same situation you were. 3x9-50mm existing scope. I went with a SWAROVSKI 6x18-50. I chose the BR reticle. This is a great formula. Unless you have a swarovski serial number you cannot enter into the software. When you enter into their system it asks you basic questions. What load, custom? Or factory ammo. They have all the ballistics for any ammo you can think of. Then you pick what elevation, temperature, and what yardage you want your zero. It takes all the custom information YOU have entered and gives you your shot placement within the reticle. Also the objective lens is adjustable and for longer than 225 yard shot it recommends using max power. What I love is the program lets YOU control the zero sight in. Which normally I have all my rifles sighted in at 200 yard zero. But with this program I chose 100 yard zero. Much easier and with the BR reticle my last crosshair is at 747 yards. Thats a good poke. The 200 yard zero had me at over 800 yards. I have a buddy of mine who spent a TON of money sending his rifle off to Wyoming to have turrets put on and custom ammo made for his rifle. Also he needed extra turrets for elevation changes. They have the scope I purchased for around $1200.00, my buddy spent almost $2000 and he has to use their custom ammo. The cartridge I use is a 150 grain Hornaday interbond factory ammo. If I want to change I can. Anyway just letting you know my choice. I dont expect you to do the same but at least check it out. I wish they would let people try the software before so you can see the difference. I know some other scopes have something similar but I went with a scope with solid glass and a great warranty. I know it is a good chunk of change but in the long run I believe I made a good choice.

I'd say you were a little high on the thrill of hunting! That is the wildest thing I have ever heard of congratulations on an encounter I wish I never have cause i would stain my drawers! -
I have tried that stuff you are going to look for and it doesnt work at all. it has picaridin in it instead of deet. Here is a link to some results similar to mine. Good luck www.buggspray.com/picaridin.html

That is awesome to hear!! I hate bugs!
-
I saw some stuff at sportsmens that I beleive was 98% deet. Small red bottle. Ya I know but using more than 100% deet doesnt work any better than 30% they make that stuff to market to people that dont know how deet works. This is not a snide remark I realize you were just probably letting me know they carried it.
-
This is something I have gone through heck with, skeeters and no seeums eat me alive. The only thing that works is deet. Usually 20% or more for serious problems. Off makes a sportsmans that has 30% but anything over 30% doesnt work any better. I heard if you are sitting in a stand those thermacells work, but I do not have experience with those. Hopefully someone else will. Except beware that not all people get bit and have the same reaction to mosquitoes and no see ums as others so if you get advice from one of the lucky ones you are screwed! I would rather have bug spray on any day!

Which rifle is best for coues and psossibly elk?
jnobleinaz replied to BIGBUGPETE's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
When you get into elk 1,800 lbs of energy is recommended at point of impact. -
Right on the 50mm objective you can see around 10-15 minutes longer.

My thoughts on the books comment is that you have a choice to enter into or not. But if you do decide to enter into the "books" you should not use radios on that animal. No one says you have to enter animals into the book, but if it was taken fair chase I think it should be. they drive our industry. There are thousands of animals that have never been entered though. And they were taken fair chase. I like looking at records and seeing where they come from. It is a part of hunting. And also drives our sport with money that all of us spend trying to get a new bow or rifle etc to help in the field. There is no law saying hunters cant use radios. And I hope there never is, because it would be one more tool that would be taken away from us. This is almost two separate topics. Record books and radios. If someone has taken an animal with the use of a radio and entered it into the books they are a dirtbag, and are not respecting that clubs rules and guidelines. If they shoot an animal with the use of a radio, I feel that is legal and nothing wrong with it. I would never want any of us to sway in a direction that would take another tool away from us. We have a very fortunate sport we can enjoy and not one of us wants to lose that. I think of it as a fragile cup that can be grabbed from us any moment. With that thought we need to remember civilizations from the past that were thought to be indestructible fell, some of them in a matter of days. We all need to stick together and try to stay away from these types of conversations over message boards. You never know who is listening, we don't want to feed the enemy with any fuel. Good luck to everyone and I hope we all shoot a booner!

I think you have to make the decision before you do a stalk. If you want to enter the animal in the books you cant use radios. But even using radios doesnt always work anyway.

Anyone that sits in a treestand in a lightning storm is tempting mother nature a little too much and not to mention a dumba%%! The worst place to stand in lightning is under a tree and especially not in a tree. Just imagine the guy in a treestand, now imagine one of those pines that have been split down the middle from lightning, and now put them together. Don't want to sound sarcastic.

i think this is a tricky question. it depends if you are in a ravine or on a ridge. I f you are on a ridge 15 feet, in a ravine where you are lower I would get way up since the deer walking down will be at eye level walking down to you.

Here you go Jim enjoy..

RIP UP THOSE AZG&F SURVEY CARDS!!!!
jnobleinaz replied to bowsniper's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Go mandatory or go home!!! You guys are trying to argue stuff that doesn't really matter. If you do not have hard data you cannot and should not make permit allocations with this information. I know the biologists work hard to recon info on the herd sizes and they do a great job. But as for harvest data survey cards are a joke. I think it is ridiculous to have set draw permit only archery units. I went to some meetings on this subject. But it seems that they let you speak but somewhat let most of it go in one ear and out the other. The four season coues hunts are also a complete joke, if you ask me. Oh and the national forests are going too close as many roads as possible now too!! I cant wait until this state becomes f-en california. And if we get a democrat in the white house with a democrat congress, god help us all. This country is going soft and I think it sucks a## that people don't look around and see whats happening. Issues, issues, issues, lots too many to worry about. -
RIP UP THOSE AZG&F SURVEY CARDS!!!!
jnobleinaz replied to bowsniper's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Very easy solution if you draw a permit to hunt big game, or buy an over the counter tag for big game. You MUST complete a harvest data card or you cannot hunt the following year. Very simple solution but it is that barrier thing again, so they say. If this was the rule I guarantee every survey would be completed. Unless someone did not want to be able to hunt the next year. my brother and i use a basic true ball trigger that has a nylon strap that is tightened to your wrist by tension. i dont know the name for it but it is by far the most comfortable one out there and it is cheap. You can pull it on or off your wrist without any problem and it has a string that ties through the trigger so it is out of the way.
