  1. Bergara HMR PRO? Mine loved factory HORNADY loads. Shot great with HORND American Gunner 140's better with 140 ELD Match. My Seekins Havak the same way and my son will use the Seekins with 143 ELD-X Precision Hunter at 1/2 MOA. Both rifles shoot same point of impact with American Gunner as other loads, at $15 per 20 rounds. I like reloading but I also like an easy out for a low round count proposition like wife's hunting load.

    Sons first deer hunt

I was living in Utah and between a Colorado Elk hunt and an Arizona Course & Elk hunt. I asked boys Mom if I could take 8 year old son deer hunting for a day and she was all like, Get Him the F out of here for a day? Yes Yes Yes take him and leave me in peace. I told my 8 yr old that we would head out at 3:00 AM. He was all for it and I had truck all loaded and ready, but decided alarm at 3:30 was good enough. At 3:20 my son woke me up and said "Dad you told me 3:00 (WTF) so we headed out and drove 1:45 to trailhead. Only squack from boy was that he wanted to go in front of me down the trail. I got it, boy wanted me behind him going down forest trail at 0 dark thirty. It was another 1:50 hike into hunt spot. When we had enough light I started glassing as we slowly walked down the trail getting closer and closer to our area. Right when we got to the center of basin to hunt I glassed up a nice 4X4 buck. I ducked down in the oak brush and dumped my pack and told Quin I had to stalk a bit for my shot. He sat in the twilight quiet as a mouse as I worked my way closer to my Muley Buck. Finally the brush got so thick I had to stand up and take a 100 yard offhand shot. Buck Down and went to get Quin and gear. I told him I was impressed he stayed quiet in the semi light and he told me he knew he had to stay calm/quiet as I stalked closer (very proud Papa). Got deer broken down and lashed to pack frame and had my hands full with REM MOD 7 708 and 4X4 head. Looking at Quin I told him I need his help, needed him to cary lite day pack with our fleece coats 2 qrts water and also binocs and belt with knife and extra shells hung over his neck. He rucked up and helped out. It was a 400 yard hike up slope to trail and another mountain trail hike for 1:50 back to truck. He did mention how spectacular the fall colors looked but nothing more than that. When we got to trailhead and rig, I was like "man I am glad thats done" my boy said "me to". That was 20 years ago and one of our best enduring memories.

    Sons first deer hunt

Its been almost 21 years since events posted above. Quin has been out of the Army for couple years and now settled enough to go on our first AZ Coues hunt in 12 years. Here we are at a PRS match getting him checked out on the rifle he will hunt with. Praying I can keep up and hoping he gets a Coues buck to match the Muley buck we took way back when.

    Podcasts are ruining hunting areas

Its a sad day when your spot is flooded by the to lazy to do their own thinking who go to the internet to get spoon fed ideas. If I saw a podcast touting a certain spot I would know enough to stay away.
  5. I was able to pick up a Bergara HMR Pro in 6.5C at Sportsmans Warehouse last month. Have about 160 rounds through it at this point. Just shot a PRS match with HORNADY American Gunner 140gr ammo. Today I sighted in for HORNADY 140gr ELD Match 6.5 C First three shots on cold clean bore went into .5 MOA group. Next two 3 shot groups also 1/2 MOA. Smooth bolt, great trigger and trigger breaks at 2 3/4 to just under 3 LBS.

    6.5-06 head stamped brass

Ahh the beauty the glory of camping and hunting in the Coronado National Forest. Good hunting, no guides to pay, real honest hunting and grilling steaks over mesquite or oak coals. Relaxed enjoyable and no border federales.

  9. I can offer a general concept and this is what I would do in your shoes. In Utah I had an area I wanted to hunt muzzleloader (late SEP season) spent all summer hiking different parts of of unit. Hiked up ridges and peaks down trails for two hours and finally stumbled on a honey hole. It was about 1:45 hiking from road and totally remote. For years this spot would produce big time. Over successive hunts found several hidden water holes and got to know all the different draws and slopes the deer and elk liked. I know the Catalinas can produce, its there if you can hoof it and search out remote pockets. Park the rig, lace up the boots and discover something away from the road.

    Lets talk boots

Merrell Reflex Mid Waterproof Hikers or more recently Cabelas Silent Stalk Sneaker. Went with the Cabelas because I needed higher tops than the Merrell's. When my Coues unit started getting grazed less and less the grass and weeds got to much for a mid top boot.

What is your dream/bucket list hunt?

I have done a fair amount of MT West hunting. Utah, Colorado the AZ. Mostly Elk, Mule deer and Coues, some guided. Plenty of duck, quail and dove. Of all, Southern AZ Coues is my dream hunt. Great country, mild weather, camping under the stars, burning steaks over oak & mesquite coals. True fair chase honest challenging hunting. Chance to see raptors, lion, bear and now Jaguars. Busting out a heard of Javalina or having a covey of mearns quail scare the crap out of you. Used to be you could get into band tailed pigeon. Take a shotgun and hunt quail or jump ducks off stock ponds.

    30-06 load

Thank you sir. I think I already have everything for that so I'll give it a shot... No pun intended haha Hey if it works thats all that counts. But one perspective is that IMR 4064 and IMR 4320 are older powders that in their day were good choices. H4831 and H4350 give you better load density (the amount of powder required fils the case) and that is supposed to be good for efficiency and accuracy. In my experience they have been great performers. Not meaning to rain on any parades and tried and true from older stuff counts to a degree.

    Longrange scope question

Just put a Leupold VX-3i LRP on my new Bergara HMR PRO 6.5C put one round into bottom of orange dot then dialed left 4 MOA up 4 MOA right 11 MOA down 4 MOA lastly left 7 MOA and last shot in box test at bottom of orange within .5 inch first shot. So far this Leupold shows repeatable accuracy. After box test dialed up zero .5 MOA and got two rounds dead center on top of each other and a third shot just right center.

    6.5 WSM or 6.5 SAUM?

For the above two discussions a thought jumps out, well two thoughts. Differently constructed bullets require a minimum and maximum velocity window to perform well. If you have a bullet that opens up at low velocity it will need enough energy to penetrate and do the job? One thing I have noticed about long range shots is that in some terrains cover it becomes difficult to just walk over and find the exact spot your animal was at when you shot. Without a spotter to guide you in its sometimes not so simple. When you find that spot an exit wound (energy) is almost a must if you have to do any tracking.

Win Pre 64 Model 70 264 Win Mag "SOLD"

Very Very nice MOD 70. Clean, with all the sights intact, classic Winchester caliber in a rare Featherweight configuration. That there is a true collectable, might have to go to a bigger audience to get full value. You could look at Utah Gun Exchange auction sight. They cover Utah, AZ, Nevada, Colorado, Idaho and maybe Wyoming shooters. IMHO to get full value you want to find a serious collector that is knowledgeable and appreciates these older classics and has the money to pay up.Thats a finite population. Good luck very nice WIN MOD 70.

Win Pre 64 Model 70 264 Win Mag "SOLD"

I concur 100 percent and have the same book quoted from. As an aside the standard grades were made with 26" barrels most of which were of stainless steel for the most part although some were standard forged chrome-molly ie., Winchester proof steel. Steel Buttt-plates were standard on the standard model but recoil pads were a no cost addition. The rifle pictured is 100% percent correct in every-way. . I am a little surprised. Are you saying Winchester used SS in Pre 64 MOD 70 barrels?

    Toyota Tacoma vs Nissan Frontier

Can you get by with a 4RUNNER or a Sequoia? I had this discussion with my brother yesterday and his thoughts were that the alternative Toyotas were less costly for equal miles & years. He got his 2006 Sequoia with 160K mi for 8K

    Longrange scope question

I have been shooting a Leupold VX-3i LRP 8.5-25X50 and a same in LRP 6.5-20X50 in matches for Silhouette, PRS and NRL rifle matches. Lots of dialing up and down. After a thousand rounds no repeatability issues. I just mounted a VX6 3-18X44 on my 270WIN limited rounds so not match experience dialing up and down.

Long Term Gun Storage Problem...Ideas Needed

I began using those steel lockable tool boxes. RIDGID or TRINITY $200-$300. They are around 42 inches wide and less than two feet deep. If you have the room in the house they are great.
