Having packed out several elk and as many big mulies you get the hang after couple times. I started with a basic frame much like ALPS Outdoorz Commander Backpack Frame. Decided to get a more robust system with nicer shoulder pads and hip belt. Found the most comfortable external frame backpack and ditched the pack bag. This upgrade made it easier to take a hindquarter and front quarter out in one load (had 2 hours of decent trail back to truck). A cargo platform was not essential, would just lay elk bag on frame put a quarter on it fold cloth over it and lash it down to frame nice and snug. Shoulders fit crossways to frame and hindquarters but down with a couple lashings to support. Good luck makes for quite an adventure.

To quote David E. Petzal "The 6.5 Creedmoor was as shrewdly thought out and designed as any cartridge I can remember". The cartridge got off to a slow steady start as a target round and grew in popularity over time. It was designed and SAAMI spec'd with a faster twist and longer throat to handle heavier bullets than the 260 REM (sounds like failings that doomed the 244 REM). I like the 6.5C for competition shooting but will stick with my 270 WIN for hunting. Oh and by the way Hornady has been brilliant with 140 SST Superformance and 145 ELD-X Precision Hunter ammo for the 270 WIN. I find the two loads to be accurate in my rifles and deadly on Coues. Finally Remington is owned by a money group that's looking to milk the company for profits and Hornady is gun guys doing fun gun stuff with other shooters and that appears to be their priority.

I hunted one year with a recurve then went to black powder roundball. Did a lot of range time with a 55# bare bow and mounted about 3 pins for the hunt. At the time read up on traditional gear and a 2 bladed broached with a 3-1 aspect (length to width) with hefty arrows sounded like the way to go with trad gear.

When I found out UA was paying Noam Chomsky as a professor laureate I emailed my displeasure to the UNIV Pres. I got some mealy mouthed response from an assistant. 6 months latter I get a phone call from a nice young lady asking for money for UA I said not interested not with Chomsky getting UA $$.

Bergara Premier mountain rifle. accurate, sweet trigger and action that runs nice.

Truly shooting from the hip here. After the rut bucks are vulnerable because they have used a lot of energy/fat reserves, not much left in the tank for that startled sprint when a predator surprises you and gets close and its full energy burst sprint or die. Does herd up normally and guessing bucks join in this behavior for added security or at least if you are not the slowest you wont get eaten? Seems like this is normal behavior for this time of year.

Sold last week 520 without scope

Quick someone buy this before we get a "Broke Back Mountain" bump.

I would echo this experience, I have had similar with my first three elk. Two where taken at 300 plus and this is where a partner spotting for you is critical. In one case I hiked down into a gully and up it a little and nothing looked the same as it did 300 yards away, took a little doing but found him right where I last saw him.

When my GF started shooting with me she would jump at loud reports from shooters on the next bench. When going with me tp PRS matches she also would startle at rifles discharging nearby. For the last 12MO she has been shooting 22NRL and 22 Silhouette. It has been a great way to get her a foundation of comfort around shooting and guns going bang.

I have never heard of a "minimum safe load" as far as black powder is concerned. For black powder a safe load is one that will get the ball out the barrel. As far as substitute powder for BP not sure if its the same?

Antelope/Deer Bullet recommendations
AZAV8ER replied to Born2hunt's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
You are correct about the tip. On the Hornady site SST tip is not advertised as the heat resistant type but after that the bullets are not the same. Hornady has an awesome video on the ELD-X and what they describe is exactly what my experience been. Very accurate and solid terminal performance. -
Antelope/Deer Bullet recommendations

Most of my deer have gone down to 165 Sierra GK out of 30-06. Had a 165 through and through both shoulders on a deer at 80 yardsish and through a spike bull at 60 yds bullets held up and exited even at a zippy speed you might not see out of the 308. More recently been using 270WIN and had my first chance to take a deer with ELD-X. It was a 350 yard shot and hit just ahead of mid ribs and exited other side back of the diaphragm, I thought the bullet did well to cross through the body lungs and paunch and make an nice exit hole of decent size. The ELD-X has good BC, been accurate and performed well that one time for us.
