3 deer from October hunt
firstcoueswas80 replied to Couescrazy33's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
very nice, pretty much sums up how my hunt went: i was lookin for a big one, then a smaller one, than anything with antlers! -
my dad had a hunt way back in the day and after he tagged out he, found a Oak limb that was straigh and made one out of it, that was easily 10 years ago, and hes is not a small fella (6'4 320) and the piece of oak still supports his weight.

i have one also, my dad and i have ben making them since i can remember. i have one that i worked long and hard on, canded it down real real fine, torched parts of it then stained it and carved my name in it with a wood burner. i also put a leather leash on it for a handle. we also put rubber tips on the bottoms so they dont make noise and we use them for the same reasons

http://www.coueswhitetail.com/az_rifle_hun...es_rifle_38.htm a guy that i have known for many many years killed this buck on the November unit 36b hunt. jake works and when he returned to camp the day he killed this buck, all he could talk about is he didnt think he was going to make it back because he ran out of water. he glasses this buck and a 85-90" buck up at around 730 from easily a mile away. he knew these deer were going to bed as they were feeding fast. he high tailed it up and over, up and over, up and over until he got to the canyon they were bedded in. once he topped over, he heard them blow and once they busted out he fired, about 60 yards away and missed the first shot, when he went to put the second round in he short stroked it, by the time he got the round in the deer were almost over the top, he threw up and this time rolled him, hitting him right in the lungs. i was supposed to go with him on this day but backed out because i had felt like poo. i have never seen anyone work as hard as he did to get this buck. the next day, we went back to the canyon where he left the body and he showed me his trail and i was shocked at how hard it was. we had sat down and glassed for MAYBE 5 minutes in this canyon and had seen close to 20 deer, 2 bucks and i went after him and compared to what he did, my trail was nothing!!! congratulations on a fine buck Jake, you worked hard for it. P.S. as far as i know he hasnt gotten it offically scored but when he does i will let you know, myself and albert aka couesstalker both say easily 95, closer to 100"

i havent tagged out yet, but tomorrow im shooting anything with antlers! i might have to stop by and see ya during the pm to tag a lil one u may have bedded for me! Jake, as you know shot a 95+ inch 3x3, the 27 y/o border patrol agent worked his butt off to get this deer. he is in great shape and even he said he almost didnt come back doing it. i went with him the next day to retrieve the body and we glassed up 2 bucks and off i went, up up up up up up and over i went, to no avail. the next day, jakes dad shot a pretty nice forky but he thought it as bigger.

dad and i have been hittin it solid since opening day and still havent let any lead fly. monday hooked up with a few buddies and by tuesday one of the guys had a 95-100" buck down. also ran into a fellow member who goes by the name of couesstalker. wednesday, the guy who shot the 95" dad shot a nice fork, while my other partner missed at a 95-100", dad glassed up 2 that were 85-95" range, i put a stalk on a 75-85 inch buck straight up a hill but he got away glased him up a loooooong ways away. we were in the diabiltios and they are still there, bring your "hiking straight up and straight down the steepest mountains you ever seen" shoes cause thats what ya need. were goin back out tomorrow in the am i dont think were gonna camp just go in hunt till dark and come back out. anyone tagged out lately? i will have pix of the 3x3 soon.

THis is a intresting topic, and i like the diversity of answers personally, i hunted for 5 years before i even got a shot, in that time i saw one group of 3 bucks, the reason i didnt shoot was because i was not comfortabl with the shot. if someone wants to shoot a spike then go for it, as long as they have a tag there is nothing that can be done. Some/most of the people who shoot spikes are either A. hunters who are only in the woods during hunting season, dont spend any time at the range, or time scouting and shoot the first legal buck that they see. B. are hunters who kill in the last few days. i was so upset/proud of my dad last season he had one 2 different occasions, spikes and small forkies 300 yards away which presented shots. he passed on them because he didnt want to shoot a small deer. myself, because of the thrill of the kill and andrenaline rush, would kill a small buck towards the end of the season, this year, i am holding out for a 80-90 inch buck and is i come home empty handed, so be it. my main goal for this year is do get my dad a buck. However, i will be carrying my grandfathers .270 and i do plan on killing a deer with it in his memory. that would be a great thrill for me and i would love to do it for him.
