i havent tagged out yet, but tomorrow im shooting anything with antlers! i might have to stop by and see ya during the pm to tag a lil one u may have bedded for me! Jake, as you know shot a 95+ inch 3x3, the 27 y/o border patrol agent worked his butt off to get this deer. he is in great shape and even he said he almost didnt come back doing it. i went with him the next day to retrieve the body and we glassed up 2 bucks and off i went, up up up up up up and over i went, to no avail. the next day, jakes dad shot a pretty nice forky but he thought it as bigger.

dad and i have been hittin it solid since opening day and still havent let any lead fly. monday hooked up with a few buddies and by tuesday one of the guys had a 95-100" buck down. also ran into a fellow member who goes by the name of couesstalker. wednesday, the guy who shot the 95" dad shot a nice fork, while my other partner missed at a 95-100", dad glassed up 2 that were 85-95" range, i put a stalk on a 75-85 inch buck straight up a hill but he got away glased him up a loooooong ways away. we were in the diabiltios and they are still there, bring your "hiking straight up and straight down the steepest mountains you ever seen" shoes cause thats what ya need. were goin back out tomorrow in the am i dont think were gonna camp just go in hunt till dark and come back out. anyone tagged out lately? i will have pix of the 3x3 soon.

THis is a intresting topic, and i like the diversity of answers personally, i hunted for 5 years before i even got a shot, in that time i saw one group of 3 bucks, the reason i didnt shoot was because i was not comfortabl with the shot. if someone wants to shoot a spike then go for it, as long as they have a tag there is nothing that can be done. Some/most of the people who shoot spikes are either A. hunters who are only in the woods during hunting season, dont spend any time at the range, or time scouting and shoot the first legal buck that they see. B. are hunters who kill in the last few days. i was so upset/proud of my dad last season he had one 2 different occasions, spikes and small forkies 300 yards away which presented shots. he passed on them because he didnt want to shoot a small deer. myself, because of the thrill of the kill and andrenaline rush, would kill a small buck towards the end of the season, this year, i am holding out for a 80-90 inch buck and is i come home empty handed, so be it. my main goal for this year is do get my dad a buck. However, i will be carrying my grandfathers .270 and i do plan on killing a deer with it in his memory. that would be a great thrill for me and i would love to do it for him.

i buy a lion tag every year, still have yet to see one. had a partner shoot a buck a few years ago, and a lion actually jumped on it and took it down and of course he didnt have a tag

Anyone hunting with new firearms this season?
firstcoueswas80 replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
well i just got the nod from Home Depot for a part time J O B (20-25) hours in the hardware department, but dont worry, this wont interfear with my hunting, i already told them i need it of, so Doug, i might not be able to shoot next weekend, depends on how the work schedule is, i have orentitaion tomorrow and well see how it goes. -
that is a toad, congrats, look at the bases on that thing, if i can just see one like that this season i would be tickled to death, even if i cant throw some lead at it, or knock it down thats awesome! are u sure that buck ONLY scores 113?? he looks a lot bigger than that to me!

Anyone hunting with new firearms this season?
firstcoueswas80 replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
well, after shoting with doug(redrabbit) this weekend i am extremly tempted to carry my also 50+ year old .270 as it outshot my 30-06 by leaps and bounds. one thing that was weird, is saturday, the scope was shooting 3 inches high at 100, then today(sunday) it was shooting dead on bullseye at 100 kinda weird huh doug? thats why i think that the simmons Aetec that is on it is bad and wanted to put the Alpen on it. i was shooting federal premium 140 gr. accubonds at an average of 2837, with the high being 2935 and the low being 2783 with the average group being 3/4". while the federal premium high energy tbcc, shot at an average of 2928, high being 2948, low 2815 groups between 2 inches(out of the 30-06), and 1/2 inch so i am un decided should i take out grandpas old rifle, and kill one for him, or the rifle that has cost me a arm and a leg that has the nice glass and expensive(er) bullets? doug and i also found a elk load, winchester supreme 180 grain accubonds, 2521 fps and 3/4 inch groups Doug you think i should take the .270??? especially now that it is clean???
