    long long distance shooting

wade, i agree with you, get me within 300 and its lights out. but the thing is, i also want something to take home for my efforts. if i have a buck i want to shoot at 300 yards, or any distance i know i can make with a good rest no wind and him standing not moving, what is the point of trying to sneak up for a closer shot? i am not going to let a good chance slip through my hands just because i want to get close, that is what archery and muzzleloader hunting is for. i carry a high power rifle, with a high dollar scope and hour upon hours of hand tuning loads and shooting them at the range so i can make those long shots if need be.

    long long distance shooting

Mike, i really wish i could shoot far like 500 yards but have now where to do it at. or atleast where i know i can go. if i can hit a 6" circle at 400 yards i am happy with that. now that i think about it, i shot my 30-06 at 300 yards with a laying down rest. the group i produced was about 2.5 inches. not bad for a 30-06 with a 16 y/o shootin (this was a few years ago) also took out a jack rabbit that day from about 315 yards.

    long long distance shooting

the longest i have ever target shot at was what do you think doug 325-350? as far as on game, my first shots were 341, then had to be over 400 after that, i hit him 5/7 times, and 3 shots were on the run and i missed one of them. i know i hit him 2/3 times because he rolled once, and fell over dead the 2nd. i have been shooting alot this year, and have worked up some good hand loads so i would not hesitate at 500 or so ( + -) with a solid set up and a stationary target.

    I got my elk

i dont think you all will be able to beat the cow i am going to shoot in 7e. man i can see her now, about 15" from ear to ear, huge head. shes gonna score awesome! but really the cow i shot in unit 1 a few years back was a monster, i got 2x more meat from her than i did my spike bull the year b4.

    I got my elk

that bull is well past the 360 marker, i think with all that lenght he will go closer to 380.
  7. i think he will go a little lower than ya'll are sayin, he will loose a lot of mass when he rubs and is not wide. however, he has awesome lenght, i say high 80's-low 90's

    G R O U S E

something kinda ironick(sp) about the hunt is we hiked our arses off and the bird that we do kill was not 50 yards off the road. the one that scott shot that flopped and then flew off was CROSSING THE ROAD IN FRONT OF MY TRUCK!!! now, if that dont wanna make someone road hunt, there were 2 guys riding around on quads the whole time who i believe killed more birds then we did!

Carrying a handgun while archery hunting?

i do the same thing, buy a lion tag and then it is all good! i really dont think that a G&F officer would give ya a hard time if you have a postil with a lion tag while hunting. i carry my pistol while rifle hunting!

    nice bucks

wow those are some nice bucks! what unit? seen em lately?
  22. lark,(notice the comma?) it is very rare inbreed. it takes just the right amount or arkansas and alabama mixture to come up with one of them. i consider myself lucky to own and know one. dont be mad or jealous because you dont have one, it took years for me to find one with the perfect mullet and the most jacked up teeth. like i said, i consider myself very lucky!
  23. about 6 years ago, my dad grandpa uncle and i had a december unit 1 bull tag. it had snowed quite a bit that year and my grandpa. who is not the most stable hiker was hiking down the back side of a steep hill. well, about every 5 steps or so you would hear him say his favorite phrase to say when he hits the ground it goes a little something like " sone of a B!TCH" i swear he must have said that about 30 times on that particular hill. same hunt, we manage to kick up 4 bulls, my dad is runnin to get in position to shoot, and does it quite well for a big man. when he gets to where he wants to be, he throws the old 270 up and get on the elk, i can see him followin the elk in his scope and right as he is pullin the trigger his footing gives out and he falls flat on his face. not thinking about it he raises back up and throws the scope to his eye only to get a face full of snow. to say the least we didnt get any elk that day! desertbull, you win!
  24. man those are nice! the trigger finger would for sure be ready to go!!! scott, i need EXACT GPS coordinates, as for mearns, hope theyre there whenever we can make it out!
  25. well, i got to lookin at some OLD posts and i saw doug posted this for new rifles last year. i will be carrying a ton of new gear. first of all is my custom thumbwhole stocked 270 wsm topped with a leupold 4.5-14x40 varmint retuicle scope (eventhough im trying to get rid of it for a boone and crockett) with 64.5 grains of 4831sc and 140 accubonds, shooting well under half inch groups. the second is my new zeiss 15x60's with the velbon efl 4a tripod i got from amanda. i am very excited about this season! so how bout ya'll, carrying anything new and exciting this year?
