I have a 1955 model 70 243, but he will try the 257 with the brake and hearing protection. I think he will be ok. He is not small, just a little thin. (didnt get that from me) The 257 will be about perfect. It isnt heavy but it isnt light. its accurate, and has enough speed and killing power to allow for a little bit of room for error. Plus, it will be awesome for him to kill stuff with the famous Chupacabra.

And this is where I am going to struggle. I lack patience sometimes. Few years ago I bought him some Mavens for Christmas. First day out, with binos on a tripod, "Levi be careful don't knock your binos and tripod over." literally 30 seconds later he knocked them over. I chewed on him pretty good... Had to realize they weren't broken and it was an accident. Made it up to him, and am more cognizant of situations like that.

Not to mention we are talking 10 year Olds in their first big game hunt. I'm more concerned with a clean shot than showing his level of marksmanship by shooting from an advanced, non-supported position. Hes not Hatchcock.

Man I couldn't disagree with you more on the bipod. I still have a bipod on my rifle at all times.

He was from California... he missed a nice buck at 600, then smoked a 100" buck at 700!

We will work up to the 257 for sure. I have a 20" heavy barrel AR that we will spend lots of time with. I have lots of 22 and 223 ammo. The "reactive" targets are a great idea, and can shrink as he gets better.

helll, ive hunted with lots of grown asss men who couldnt set up their own rifle, find the deer and kill it! Let alone a brand new hunter.

These things are getting out of hand! -
I have a Mystery Ranch Pintler. (It's the non-hunting version so not technically the Pintler) and I LOVE it. It is extremely comfortable, has a comfortable and light frame. However it is a little on the small size. It is PERFECT for hunting, however turns a little small when an animal is on the ground.

What does everyone use that doesn't have the fancy name tag attached to it? For years, I had a First Lite shirt and it was absolutely wonderful. By far the best base layer I have had. Dried out and didn't stink after the hike in was the best attribute. Being as I am the non-athletic build, and the price, the designer brands are not what I go for anymore. I just ordered a couple of these to try out. https://www.mountainwarehouse.com/us/merino-mens-long-sleeved-round-neck-top-p13069.aspx/Black/?utm_source=google_shopping&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=SMART+SHOPPING+-+SHOPPING+US&utm_term=&utm_content=|pcrid|390932670121|pkw||pmt||pdv|c|slid||product|023200005004|&gclid=CjwKCAjwt7SWBhAnEiwAx8ZLavaJ7kgkOdLqUXgBwxcWhhj9_4L4JPeeivu5hsur0Y2wjMUrbx4mWxoClUMQAvD_BwE

As pointed out, the reports have been a little slow, so I decided to take a break from school work and type up a short report. Tried a new unit with my hunting partner, it was awesome. His old stomping grounds that he has killed some great deer from. We were not over run with giant bucks, but had a great time and I managed to fill my tag on a cool buck on Tuesday the 25th. We hiked into an area and were sitting there glassing. I got a little chilly so I stood up and put on my light jacket. When I did that, I had two does staring at me at about 150 yards. Went back to glassing. About 30 minutes later, I pull my eyes away from my binos and see two bucks at about the same spot. "Shooter buck!" I say to Jim, as I stuff an ear plug in my ear and grab the 28. The buck is only 138 yards away and sees me moving, but there is a bush in front of me where I cant use my bipod, so I hold the rifle freehand and let it rip. I see him turn after the shot and take a few steps so I let another rip. I only had two down in the gun so pull a 3rd from the saddle bag and drill him. It happened fast so I wasn't 100% sure of the shots, but saw a bush shaking for a few seconds after the last shot so I was confident he was down. While reviewing what happened, I saw a cactus that appeared to be red and glistening. Sure enough, covered in blood. When we got to the blood, it looked like someone poured a 5 gallon bucket. Somehow, this buck took the 180 Hybrid from my 28 through both shoulders with a massive hole in his chest and made it 30-40 yards before going down.
