6.5x284 mule deer/coues gun
trophymaster replied to trophymaster's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
That 6.5-06 seems like a sweet cartridge also, with those kind of velocities would it tend to shorten barrel life? Or is the shortened barrel life label more geared towards benchrest shooting compared to a hunting rifle? roninflag - Your tag a 12AE or 12AW? -
6.5x284 mule deer/coues gun
trophymaster replied to trophymaster's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
By novice reloader, only been reloading for the last few years, so know the basics, but still a ton to learn. Guess I meant as a clarification of not knowing how to resize brass, etc. for some of the other cartridges out there 6.5saum, 6.5-06 etc. Want to make sure I have enough punch for large mule deer also kiabab/strip size deer (250lb+) -
6.5x284 mule deer/coues gun
trophymaster replied to trophymaster's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Thanks for the comments so far. Not dead set on the 6.5x284, but seemed to be readily available in a factory rifle, components, and good ballistics. As I am a novice reloader. -
Load Development Help
trophymaster replied to trophymaster's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Well I got some H1000, loaded up a set 77gr-81grs and went out and shot a OCW set, I didn't have the means for 400yds to do a ladder set. Followed the directions shoot one shoot at each target moving up in grains than worked my way backwards than back up to complete the set. Letting barrel cool between each shot. Starting to think this gun just does not like 180 or lighter bullets? or something else is going on. Attached is the targets shoot there should be a distinct scatter node to determine OCW and I am just not seeing any consistency at all. Maybe I am reading it wrong. The fouler shots(first target) were winchester supreme 180CT ballistic tips. I just wanted to see what they would do as you can see huge group. I think I will load some 200's and see how it performs, going to strip it down also and check action screws, scope mounts, etc. again. -

Load Development Help
trophymaster replied to trophymaster's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Thanks for all the suggestions so far will be trying them out for sure. I'm really scratching my head now, I shot a .7" group with 72.5 grns, so loaded some more with 72.5grns and loaded 3.380, 3.360, and 3.340. Not sure what is going on either my shooting form is that bad or something else seems to be going on?? Just seems to be really inconsistent -

Its is a 300 Winchester Mag, powder is 4831SC, OAL is about max to fit into magazine(magazine is 3.4"), I don't have a chrony, only shot a few factory ammo through it seemed to like barnes ttsx 165 the best, tried factory 150's and they were all over the place. Figured would start with 180's and go from there max hunting distance would be 700yds (my capabilties, not comfortable shooting beyond that on game yet) -

Saturday April 2nd Let's try and get there around 8:30AM 1.) We will finish removing all the fences. I will have a big supply of fence tools and work gloves. I will have a quad with a wire roller machine. There are 4 sites 3 just need rolled (some with the machine, some by hand) the 4th fence is completely standing so wires need to be cut, posts pulled, wire rolled, and everything carried out to a road. I will try to line up another couple employees with quads or rangers. But it would be good if a few volunteers could bring rangers or ATVs to help haul fencing out of the forest. The attachment lists the remaining fence work. 2.) The second job will be gathering and piling up loose junk from around and inside the old buildings. The stuff does not need to be sorted, just piled somewhere that heavy equipment and a dump truck can easily get to it. Hopefully it will be too cold for snakes, but we will definitely have to warn folks to be cautious. If you need more info please e-mail me: hchllc@yahoo.com Thanks,

I was in the same boat as you after my november hunt decided the "Just One" was just overkill. I researched packs and narrowed it to two the Eberlestock X2 and the Blacks Creek Western after loading both of them up with my hunting gear and testing them both out at the store. I settled on the Blacks Creek just fit me alot better. Both packs were great it just came down to fit. I would suggest trying on the packs and testing them out to see which ones fit you best. Also both packs would easily pack out a boned out coues.

I have always shot aluminums and still due. I like them for all the reasons you have mentioned, the heavier arrow increased KE, the price of them, not having to worry about exploding arrows(had a friend have a carbon explode and go through his hand). I don't buy all the hype on the faster arrow stuff who care people kill animals every year with recurves also and they are not no speed demons. It all comes down to what you feel comfortable with and shot best with. The only advantage to speed is you miss faster
