AZGFD IS ASKING FOR SUGGESTIONS
bullwidgeon replied to KGAINES's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Seems pretty simple to me. Hunting is not a constitutional right. Therefore making money off of hunters is not a constitutional right either. If they ban the sell of hides, heads and antlers then USO has no ground to stand on in this case and we can make the NR Tags go down to 0%. I think that would be best . Thats right folks 0%. I dont need to go anywhere but NM and since Jorge Taulman and his crew are in bed with Gov Richardson(I think that is his name) and the chumplords who run the show over there in NM then NR hunting will be allowed there forever, because we all know Jorge Taulman is not going to be able to guide NM locals all the time and make a living. Let them deal with his absurdity and lets take our state back and make it ours in a way is has not been since the 80's. Bret M. -

save your money and buy the absolute best pair of 10x, 12x or 15x binos and a tripod that you can, even if you have to save for a year or more. Bret M.

I got drunk and ended up in a bar in Safford one time, I saw some wild hogs that night. Seriously, There are some in the mesquite thickets along the Santa Cruz from Marana to Arizona City. I had some coming to bait regularly this year but they would never come in during the day. I finally gave up after 100 pounds of corn and the temperature got to hot. I might start hauling them corn again after early dove season ends and try for one again. These were on Johnsons land. I was doing feral goat control and coyote calling and happened to find their tracks, but I am sure some could be found on public or non-posted land around there somewhere, maybe along the river behind the Airpark. Steve, Check out the pear flats along the R-100 border, airplane mountain and bonita creek. If that don't work look at the Nantac and then the Black River. If you haven't found a bear after checking all that out, then pack up and go home because if your luck fails you that bad in those awesome bear infested spots then you have no hope of ever finding a bear no matter where you go. Good luck... Bret M. -
Anyone who is half gorilla and half ugly can climb trees like a savage...Lark meets all that criteria, I wouldn't challenge him to a tree climbing contest bwaahahahahaha!!! Bret M.

Tha depends on which record book you are talking about... Bret M. -
I think shooting bears over bait sucks, bears become reckless over food alot. Kinda like drug addicts, sometimes it seems pitiful to watch on the Outdoor Channel a wild and wary creature come into some dudes stand in Maine, stick its head in a barrel full of krispy kreme donuts and sit there and munch them and stare at the hunter in the stand waiting to be cracked. Something is not right with that scene in my book and I have no desire to do it. Shooting a coues deer with a bow with or without bait is another thing all together. These deer are not as chingered and tame as their South Texas and Alabama cousins, for the most part they are wary no matter what kind of bait or lure you use even in the rut. Ethics is a personal thing, do as you see fit as long as it is within the law. And yes, I have killed a bunch of deer over feeders in both Texas and Louisiana when I lived down there and I still feel it is a messed up way to hunt. That is just how I feel personally and I don't look down on anyone who wants to do it that way... Bret M.

It is way too cold to hunt deer in the high country in December and January when you could hunt them in 72 degree weather down on the Mexican Border. I know they dont migrate too far when it is 72 degrees outside Bret M.

I know the Sierra Ancha wilderness area has some hike in only tanks and good slopes for glassing in unit 23 but honestly you could be hunting in 33 with less drive time than it takes to get there. Besides that 33 has a billion and a half times as many deer as that place does. Good luck. Bret M. -
HAVE YOU SEEN THIS BEFORE???
bullwidgeon replied to Kilimanjaro's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Yes I have seen them do that. It is cool when they do that. My uncles used to hunt near a tank in the Catalinas and one of them shot a buck swimming in the tank one afternoon on the early hot October hunt. The buck came down and got a drink and decided to go for a swim, if my uncle was thinking he would have waited but just could not resist.. They had to go swimming to get him out. This year in NM unit 15 I was hunting turkeys and set up on a tank a gobbler had been coming to and right at first light a herd of 13 elk cows and yearlings came in and a few of the yearlings went to "boxing" and splashing each other in the middle of the tank. It was pretty cool to watch but it kept the gobbler from coming in. Bret M. -
Fear the mullet!!! That is great! I remember the early ninety's and my Kevin Staab deck and my Rob Roskopp deck and G&S trucks and Slimeball wheels. I gave it all up when I got a Camaro at 17 but my skater days were alot simpler and funner. To this day I wear nothing but Vans, Converse, Danner and Vasque. The good "old" days rule. War ollies and rail slides!!!! Seacrest Out Bret M. P.S. Why does your website sound like Royer Cooks back yard? Nasty old growly hounds ....

2005-2006 draft regulations
bullwidgeon replied to Kevin's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
I got my tag on the internet last year. They sell them in Reserve and Silver City though too. They are $196 and they have two different seasons both in the first half of November, a short 3 day one and a longer 5 day one. You need to scout if you want to find a coues deer, muleys seem to be everywhere though. Good luck. Bret M -
It all depends on who draws the tags but the Game and Fish site is dead on the money for info and spots in that unit. Some years certain spots get very crowded and that makes it tough, but then the next year they are deserted. It is my favorite unit to hunt because there are alot of places where you can easily get away from roads and see alot of deer every day. I would try walking into the more remote sections of Reddington pass first. Alot of roads go in and end both to the North of the Bellota Ranch and down on the Rincon side as well. Scouting is always the best and doing it close to the hunt will be far more valuable than anything you can get from G&F or anyone on the internet. Don't be afraid to relocate if a ton of guys show up opening day in the spot you wanted to hunt, almost the whole unit has lots of coues in it, even the burns. We killed a nice 80 inch deer in the Bullock burn the year it burned, the deer didn't care it had burned 3 months prior. Good luck and post some pics if you get one, I love seeing unit 33 deer. Yes I laughed pretty hard on that one. I thought for sure at any moment you were going to be out of shells and have to head back to the truck The guy shooting at the bear and then in the end after umpteen shoots asking if you guys wanted to shoot at him as the bear was half ways to Albuquerque was hilarious too . I especially feel for that guy though, I shot at a bear umpteen times one time and I am pretty sure that the bear I shot at made it all the way to Albuquerque That droptine buck must look awesome repaired. Iam going to look at pears and acorns and maybe some deer this weekend in 27 . Bret M.

2005-2006 draft regulations
bullwidgeon replied to Kevin's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
By making your OTC coues tags go to draw that is unconstitutional. I am going to sue the state for denying me my oppertunity to whack your much underused and underestimated resource of gorilla sized coues deer. Just kidding Really, I think it is a good idea allthough a little restrictive, but mark my words, some of those units will be phenominal and start producing MONSTERS in 2007 for those lucky enough to draw one of the few coues tags. I know where I am putting in from now until I get drawn over there. And yes even with my elk and late coues tag here in AZ I will be over there again this year during rifle season looking for the toad I missed last year ... Bret M. -
Just look at Antlerboys site he has some nice deer from 21 on there. That is what 21it is capable of. Amanda I am not meaning this as spam, just that he has some nice unit 21 deer in the photo section. And some d@mn good bear video . www.rimrock-outfitters.com Bret M.

There are record book bucks under every tree in that unit, what you need to be holding out for is a 130 net typical type deer. Preferrably a 4 pointer if you can find one , but you might as well shoot a 3 pointer that scores 127" if you can not find a 4 pointer that goes 130" Bret M.

7/19 Judge rules AZ must fix now
bullwidgeon replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Lark, I looked and looked but I didnt see anyone I thought was ugly enough to be you and Allen . I see you and your dad drew 28 general, congrats. Just make sure you two flop big carp and leave the coues for my December tag there . No seriously, I got there a few minutes late just as people were walking into the meeting. I had a green and white Hawaiin shirt, shorts and a green hat on. I was suprised they offered the extra tags, but I have a feeling they are going to be like a lazy old mule going forward. They are not going to decide anything unless the public shows up and bugs them constantly about next year. Much like most state agencies they seem reactionary for the most part, not proactive. 7/19 Judge rules AZ must fix now
bullwidgeon replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
This is a one time fix Ernesto. Next year it will not be done. That being said, Pete Cimallero (I am sure I probably spelled that wrong) from the Arizona Deer Association did say he was disturbed by the increased amount of muley tags on the Strip this year in his speech to the commission. Pete usually knows what he is talking about and is very active in wildlife conservation in this state. So in short, yes, this does probably strain the resource this year a little. The different regional offices had this plan run by them on Friday and they determined that no significant long range biological impact will result from the increases this year but I have my doubts about certain units. I have never been to unit 10 but they added alot of bull tags to that unit in particular. 116 extra tags to be exact, so 116 bulls could be killed there this year that normally would live to be lion food or grow another year and I would think that would negatively damage the herd for a few years, but what do I know. Probably alot of those tags will go unfilled though because they are for the late hunt and I don't think the late hunt has very high sucess rates. Anyways, hopefully by next year we can all figure out something a little better. It is important to make as many commission meetings as possible if not to speak, then to show your support and keep track of exactly what will be going on come April when this process starts all over again. Bret Mattausch -
http://www.azgfd.com/h_f/hunting_units_36c.shtml Start with that. I found the milepost markers worth their weight in gold last year. I helped out some muley hunters there and one of the biggest coues deer I saw all of last year lived in a place where you would not think coues live. He ran across the road as I was on my way back to town . I was suprised to say the least. The ENTIRE unit has coues deer even the stuff out by the highway. Good luck... Bret M.

27/28 late coues tag and a population management elk tag in a top secret unit . Bret M.

The only thing I like shooting as much as elk and bears is coues deer. For all, I know there are no carp North of the Colorado, never been there, never put in there, never plan to. In fact they could eradicate every carp north of I-40 and I would never know. Elk are important to me, and I am sure some other Joker will challenge the Antelope and Sheep 10% rule next year and we will have to deal with this again. That is probably why you see a massive outcry from everyone here. Buster, I think what Taulman did is open a can of worms that could potentially lead to NR fees in this state and in all other Western states very similiar to Indian Reservations. Who does that help? The average guy like you or me? If you have the money floating around I highly suggest you look into a San Carlos or WMAT elk tag, I hear they have some good ones there, I know they have some of the best elk country in this state and you wouldn't have to compete with any of the local rednecks out drinking beer and shooting squirells, grouse and band tailed pigeons in your unit on your trophy bull hunt. Me being a regular guy and all will have to save a few more years before I can flop down the $20K. Bret M.
