I'm Hooked (Our October Hunt)
bullwidgeon replied to Noworries's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Congrats to you guys, killer first buck! You guys deserve it all and more after scampering up that rock pile! Bret M. -
Sweet buck! Bret M.

We went in there one afternoon on the East end and climbed up pretty high on the hill. We didn't see any nice bucks though. We heard alot of shooting from the West end of Batamote that afternoon so maybe that's where all the good bucks were at or maybe dudes were shooting at carp or something in that big bowl by Rincon tank. We went to a backup spot the next day and came up with a bunch of deer so we never went back to Batamote. Good luck Bret M.

Lion photos and RACKS...
bullwidgeon replied to Becker's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Well, At least he is thinning out that messed up 2 point gene and letting the big 3 and 4 pointers go . Those are all nice racks and that looks like a good spot to whack a lion. Bret M. -
We want pictures! Bear pictures, big heavy chingered gene 2x3 NM buck pictures or even the giant eyeguard buck pictures! Bret M.

I saw 3 bucks over 90 inches on the first hunt. 2 were better than 100, they were all within 400 yards of a dirt road, and in the case of the biggest of the three he was within 500 yards of the freaking highway (pavement) just watching traffic cruise right on by. Same place he was at in August when I first found and video'd him. I think that big toad would have freaked out if he didn't hear big trucks and cars cruising by at 65 MPH every day and night. I am now a bonafide road hunter. The worst part is figuring out how to hide your truck before you go on a stalk from the road, you gotta be top secret or the deer will figure out your "road hunting" them. I feel bad for you goofballs with giant quadruple cab extendo bed monster trucks with 96 inch lifts on them. Those big rigs are hard to stash in the greasewood flats . Bottom line is you gotta hunt where the deer are at and work around the obstacles presented, especially down South where there will be a bunch of other hunters and there is no real wilderness (maybe the top end of the Baboquivari's get an exception but not really, you can only hunt half of them). If you want a wilderness experience put in for any of the 21 through 28 or 31-33 units. Plenty of big roadless tracts of rock piles to go bumping around in in those units. Good luck. For whatever reason this hunt was a tough one. We really had to work on the bucks which we were into every day but just had alot of bad luck actually killing them. We passed up a ton of bucks early and stalked and tried to kill 5 different bucks and it never worked out over the first few days. Opening morning I was set up to shoot a big toad at 385 yards and they got spooked by a running doe and got up, I was never given a clean shot as the big one snuck up through the thick stuff. I could have shot the 2 smaller bucks easily several times but not the toad. It was way too hot and the deer were stacked up on water. Everywhere we glassed more than a half mile from water we found no deer, but if we looked near water we found a ton of them. My buddy also got his first coues buck and had plenty of oppertunities at solid deer including one toad that gave us the slip Saturday night, never to be seen the next morning. Oh well, we were finally happy to be tagged out yesterday and look forward to maybe getting back down there and trying to find the antlers of both the toads we saw if they don't get killed this year. I shot mine at a little over 400 yards yesterday morning out of a group of 3 bucks which I glassed up behind camp at first light. He was the biggest of the three and I was pleasantly suprised to walk up and find out he is actually bigger than I thought when I shot him. Thats my first experience with ground growth instead of ground shrink. My buddy shot his buck midday at 200 yards on Sunday, once again did I mention it was HOT ? Good luck all you November hunters and focus the hunt on the thickest slopes you can find near water. The deer were really brushed up hard and holding tight after day one. Bret M.

Scott, Nope, I am busy this weekend. Did you guys draw both hunts over there? Maybe the second one or the late hunt in AZ though for a few days. Good luck over there. Bret M.

I was with a dude who got bit on the hand in a hunt in NM once. He swelled a little but the stinger didn't stay there. He got sick and dizzy for awhile but was OK by the next day. Bret M.

Width rules, good mass too! Very nice 33 deer. Bret M.

As hot as it was, that was a real good idea. Another cold beer in some shade some place. Congrats on the buck! Bret M.

Indeed. I killed one scouting and saw one opening day... Bret M.

Sounds fun, awesome pictures and nice bucks. Too bad about the beer injury, thats why we rock cans, safer for those of us who are injury prone . Bret M.

We had 36A tags. I was sunburnt, it was hot. I really was going to try to get away with shorts but there was too much cacti around. We both shot the bucks with my .300 Weatherby (really is there anything else worth shooting with? ). Brian has a nicer Weatherby than me but put a new scope on a month before the hunt and never got a chance to dial it completley in at 400 and 500 yards. We knew mine was dialed in all the way out to a mile and a half so we mostly just packed mine around . Tommy, I spent 8 hard days in New Mexico unit 12 in September and could never find a carp buck worth shooting, I ate muzzleloader tag soup. I wish a had a bull tag there though. Bret M.

We will be down from Wednesday to Tuesday in my beat up gold Tacoma and my buddies gold Ford F150 extended cab probably towing a big Polaris quad. I think we are going to camp somewhere over by Batamote hill but we may camp on the West end if we find some deer in the Guijas this weekend. Bret M.

That thing is cool looking. Congrats! Bret M.

I saw two last month. One in a prairie dog town in unit 2. I tryed to kill him, he made a hole before I got my .223 out of the case though, I always wanted a badger pelt. I also saw another one in unit 12 in New Mexico, strangely enough in another prairie dog town. I didn't try to kill him because I wasn't sure if it was legal in NM to do so or not. They are pretty neat little creatures, they must wreak havoc on them prairie dogs though. Bret M.

At least the sister does anyway . Thats an awesome deer even though it is the wrong flavor . One day 27 with continued restrictive management will be like a little Kaibab, only closer to home. Ahh who am I kidding, next year I am sure G&F will go back to the two 1000-1500 tag hunt structure though and jack it all up again for a few years Bret M.

Just my standard 4 day "weekends". Maybe I can make it over there before Christmas if you guys are going to even bother hunting that early . I used most of my vacation time chasing elk and carp in September and then took a few days off for Serna's and my hunt in 36A in a few weeks. He is almost like the Gorilla. Add another 5 or so inch tine in there between the eyeguards and G2's on both sides and then lengthen the beams a little, add a big swelled up carp looking neck, a little scared looking weener buck in behind him and a bunch of worn out looking does in front of him and then a few inches of snow on the North slopes in the picture and walla, you have the Gorilla . At least thats how I remember it anyways. I do remember glassing alot of that country over there very hard last year and not seeing anything like the one in the picture. You have a major head start just knowing where he is at now. Bret M.
