That’s a great ending I still remember my reaction when I first read this post. Maybe not totally closed but at least you found those!

what rifle for me 14 year daughter ?
Born2hunt replied to fireplanes's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
To answer your question it would be good to know what she’s hunting. A 7-08 covers a lot more game than a 243 depending on what she wants to hunt. If elk is in your mind a 7-08 is a good idea if she can manage the recoil. My daughters prefer the 243 but sometimes I wish they were shooting something a little bigger. I agree with the comment on cheap rifles. The savage axis is a nice shooter but the stock is light and flimsy I’d look into a real stock that fits her right. -
Im making a trip north of Santa Fe soon up into the area above Terrero soon. Im doing some research into the area for good fishing (both for me to hike in and also places more kid friendly). Does anyone out there have experience with the area, and anywhere youd recommend trying?

Thanks thats a lot of good info Im glad I reached out! I have the Reel Life on my list of calls to make before I go hopefully they know the latest. I think the forest has been closed until this last week but hopefully they will have gotten out by now. Ive never been in the area so Im trying to take it all in as fast as I can to make sure I hit the best spots while I can. Planning some hikes too looks like some really nice country. Thanks again!

I’ve archery hunted in unit 1 quite a bit and I’ve never had to worry about rain or dew. I’d keep it simple.

Its good to get the practice now though instead of up there. Youll get the hang of it just dont worry about knots or snags at first - accept that as tuition and eventually itll come easier. I got hooked on fly fishing in Wyoming and never looked back - throwing flies is 95% of all the fishing I do now.

I totally agree. A 9 5 wt floating and sinking option would cover most bases. A smaller 3 or 4 is nice on the smaller creeks. I didnt do a guided float but from what I heard while I was there I did better from the bank than the float trips were doing. Looks like a fun way to spend the day though.

Did the live stream just crash for everyone else? As soon as the motion was made to remove language regarding cameras it crashed and I cant get it back up. If someone can post a summary of the decision that would be great! -
Checked a few trail cams this weekend and had a number of lions fairly regular. Ive always heard hounds need to be on the track within a day so but I cant check the camera often enough to ever be that close behind. Im thinking of trying to call them in. Ive never chased predators before does anyone have suggestions where to start? Im reading everything I can on here and my plan right now is to try calling them in. Since Ive never tried I thought Id see what recommendations you all would have.

Maybe Im missing something but what is the intent of banning non-cell cameras? I havent seen a clear reasoning for banning standard trail cams and what theyre trying to accomplish. -
Second try with the picture..

Heres a picture of him for what its worth. Im thinking I take a buddy in there with a remote caller and see if I run into some luck.

Thanks that link was very helpful. Feeling pretty good about the 243 unless I can get her comfortable shooting something a little larger. I appreciate everyones feedback!

My buddy and I have been planning to hunt 23 this weekend but Im not hearing any good reports. Is anyone shooting birds in there this year?
-
Ive used the slick trick vipers successfully on 1 cow elk and on 1 turkey. The turkey flopped 20 yards downhill and I found the arrow 60 yards past the bird. The cow elk was a double lung pass through. She didnt bleed much but I found her 50 yards away from the shot so I cant complain. She started bleeding about 40 yards from where she stood at the shot. I once shot a muley with the viper that I didnt recover. I wanted to blame the broadhead but I eventually admitted it was just a bad shot and hit too high so I continued to use it and had good results noted above. Ive talked to too many successful bowhunters to question the slick trick viper. As for accuracy it groups perfectly with my field points out to 80 yards Ive never had a concern with its accuracy.

Thanks for all the positive input everyone. The 80 gr ttsx laid my daughter’s deer right down without taking a step, and like I said it blew through both scapula. Still I do like as big a hole as I can manage so I think I’ll have her shoot the 243 a lot, then see if I can step her up to the 08. If she shoots that as well I’ll go with that. $280 for a 270 wsm including the muzzle brake is a steal of a deal. I’d be all over that for her if I found that deal. She’s also my most sensitive to noise but I’ll carry earplugs for her like I did on the deer hunt. It’s all about keeping them happy and comfortable!

Thanks its good to get some positive feedback. Ive got her shooting reduced loads for practice and I have a slip on recoil pad. That said one daughter doesnt think it has any recoil and I tend to agree with her. But I dont want her getting nervous with a rifle she knows has a little more kick and have her nervous at the shot. The deer load was an 80 grain TTSX, and it performed so well Im planning to do that again. Any suggestions on a 100 grain bullet I should look into? The 80 gr groups well and performed on game but if they made a heavier option I would go with that.

I saw a post earlier today that theres a meeting tomorrow where AZGFD is discussing potential regulations regarding trail cams. I dont see it on their agenda and now I cant find the post i saw earlier about it. Does anyone know if this is part of the meeting tomorrow, and how to send in comments?
-
Never mind I found the other post. Still not sure where to send comments and I’m guessing it’s too late anyway. I’d delete this but I don’t see that option either.

Your feeling on the proposed trail camera restriction (ban)
Born2hunt replied to Capt. Don Martin's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
How do you post comments? Im down to just one camera now but I definitely support keeping the current setup and see no reason to change it. Archery hunters benefit the most I dont see the harm in cameras posted near water. Would this apply to natural creeks and seeps or only AZGFD water catchments? -
What is the reduced price? Is $600 the initial price or the reduced price?

My kids have the 21 youth tag right now and so far weve only glassed up does during the season. I glassed up some nice coues bucks before the season but havent seen them since. Question is should I keep looking where Im seeing does or will I definitely not see bucks on the same ridge as the does? The bucks were 1/2 - 3/4 mile from where Im now glassing up does. Thanks!

Heres a pic of the deer caped out. Really nice buck and he had a huge body. He lived in a burn so he has nice charcoal colored antlers which is pretty neat. Im real happy for her!
